    So, three then.

Structural engineer should have dug a trial hole, but I don’t think you’d get much joy pursuing that.

Does sound like the builder is taking the p1ss though – we’ve just built an smallish extension that required 3m deep foundations down one side, and 2m deep down the other due to complex (and tedious) drain issues. The foundations are basic trench fill and the total groundwork cost was ~8K which although a lot, makes me wonder where the extra 9K is coming from.

Can’t go wrong with Neff ovens, in my experience.

As it happens, I’ve got a less than two year old one for sale on the off chance you may be interested..

This recent EpicTV video really highlights why people ride mountain bikes in the Peak District.

Could be useful from an ‘adventure tourism’ (horrible phrase) point of view?

Wasn’t the recent work on the Roych done far more sympathetically than this piece of wanton vandalism? Why the difference in approaches?

As has been mentioned above, getting the views of other user groups would be good too.

I’ve got lots of tube cutters, but use a saw guide for steerers – steerers are thinker than tube cutters are designed for, and you end up with a burr on the outside that you have to file off anyway.

Yep – hacksaw and a guide much better for this reason.

Me163 Komet – very fast, very dangerous (just not to the enemy).

TAFKASTR – yeah, we don’t head up that way if there’s more than two of us, otherwise it’s the lane (ugh). Not considered heading up through the quarry though, we usually descend that way when heading back towards Two Dales.

Usually go up through Hall Dale as it’s much nicer than climbing the first bit of Back Lane. Got stopped by the landowner a few weeks back though, he’s not particularly happy about bikes in there – mainly because he believes (correctly or not) that it attracts quads and MXers. We had a long chat with him and he was pretty reasonable to be fair, was fine with us carrying on. He did say that he’s been given abuse by several riders though, which is pretty sh1t really.

    Strider or Islabikes Rothan.

We’ve got the Islabikes and a friend has a Strider, both really happy with them.

Sounds trite, but the way to stay loose is to stay loose. Head up, heels down, don’t grip too tight, don’t lock your arms and legs.

If you’ve got into the (bad) habit of it, you have to keep reminding yourself to do it – eventually it will become a good habit!

Formula The Ones are very powerful and controllable, but mine were also incredibly unreliable.

    Can’t go wrong with XT.

Yeah, I’ve encountered him before and he’s belligerent and aggressive, won’t listen to reason and really doesn’t like bikes.

Plenty of people (non riders) have mentioned him as well, he’s well known to the rangers and a lot of the locals and generally he’s ignored.

Thing is.. He only needs to moan in the right ear once, and it could cause a lot of access related grief. I’ve seen similar things happen in other local spots, and some of the rangers aren’t particularly happy about the number of riders up there anyway.

He really doesn’t like bikes, and takes every opportunity he can to complain to the council, neighbours and anyone who will listen.

We stopped using that bit years ago – why cause grief? It’s his land, and there are plenty of other ways in.

High Peak Trail was fully open the other night I think. Rode up it all anyway – still lots of scaffolding up and the diversion in place, but the main trail through the works was open.

I used a stanley knife when repairing mine which it was fine, and it’s a really easy job to do. As mentioned above plenty of info around the net to take you through it.

Islabikes Rothan has a good brake, easily adjustable too.

I’ve always liked CYB, and while it’s a shame a lot of the original trails have gone / been changed beyond recognition, it’s still great to ride, and has a nice feel about the place.

Spitfire (I got one, it’s brilliant).
    Five.
    Mega TR.
    Commencal HipHop.

If you really really want a Rocket though (and they do look great), then the second hand Pitch / Prophet to tide you over suggestion is a good one.

Not used them, but these guys have been recommended to me. They’re in Darley Abbey, but will probably work in Belper.

They’re certainly powerful – noticeably more so than the kevlar pads.

Only been running them for a few weeks, so can’t comment on longevity yet.

Remote, otherwise it’s just a more convenient version of a seat QR.

You’ve already figured it out, but it’s a bigger trade off than you may realise if you’ve not used one before.

Excuse my ignorance but what does this mean?

I though, I’d probably be playing around with swappable dropouts to have a bike that could swing both ways
    [/quote]

Banshee Spitfire (for example) has separate dropouts, which are available in 26″ and 650b flavours. Viable option for future proofing frames, at the cost of a bit of extra weight.

(Oh, and nice one Cotic – a bold move, and exciting stuff).

Mountain Morphs are okay, but bulky.

I got a Topeak Race Rocket MT – it’s compact, and high volume so good for inflating big tyres.

Not exactly cheap, but worth it.
