Fox Unabomber gloves, although they’ve now replaced the carbon knuckles with something else.

Dunno what the nature of this something else is though.

I’ve also had crohns for 20 years, but I was lucky in that they diagnosed it relatively early. First few years was really bad, couldn’t function properly without high doses of prednisolone – asacol, sulfasalazine etc didn’t help at all.

I was offered surgery – resections etc, but decided not to as it’s so irrevocable.

Going on to Azathioprine made the difference – stabilized things enough so I could start exercising again, and that along with diet has made it possible to live a perfectly normal life. Struggle for energy sometimes, and some foods can cause problems but generally I’m fine – I think I’m pretty lucky really.

Try and eat before a ride if you can – porridge works for me.

+1 for Mercian if you want an A1 primo deluxe job doing.

At the lower end of the scale, Derwent Enamellers (also Derby) did a decent job of powder coating a mate’s frame recently.

While I was waiting for my shims to arrive, wrapping a piece of inner tube around the frame worked fine.

Six Pack has better suspension, and is probably stronger.

Hustler is plenty stiff and strong, and has better geometry (lower and slacker).

Having had both, and given the choice, I’d go for the Hustler every time.

I’ve got one of the earliest ’09 frames (bought in 2008), which has the gusset, hollow V on the swingarm and slimmer down tube.

It *doesn’t* have the cable guide changes you list (and are pictured), and I’m not sure about the top tube profile.

It *does* have the new geometry though, so the one you are looking at should be fine.

    Define ‘best’..

Move is like the Wii, but works properly. It can locate the controllers position and orientation accurately, which means it’s good for ‘augmented reality’ style stuff – putting a sword or tennis racquet in your hand, and so on.

Kinect is completely different, technically very clever, but very analog and ‘fuzzy’. Lends itself well to dancing games, fitness games and stuff like Kinectimals (which is ace). Not good for first person shooters, driving games (despite the early publicity) and so on. Oh, and you need a lot of space in your living room for it. It’s something new and ambitious but may be ahead of it’s time, and developers are still scratching their heads working out what to do with it.

For teh hardcore gamer? Move. For drunken party games? Kinect, probably, depending on what comes out.

    wheel spoke did mine fine.

Mine too – I screwed the threaded end into the hose, which fastened it securely with no need for tape or similar. Almost makes it easy.

Got full length outers on one bike, and Transfil sealed cables on the other (it has cable stops).

I think the sealed cables are loads better – full length outers are overrated.

If you're doing it as a hobby, C++ isn't the language to learn – it's very much an all or nothing language, if only so you can work out which parts not to touch with a bargepole.

C# on the other hand would be a good choice – using windows forms, you can chuck together some fairly complex applications quite easily, and learn as you go. It will also give you a nice grounding in object oriented programming.

As has been mentioned, you can get yourself in a proper mess with C++, but if you want to have a crack anyway (and chapeau! if you do..) pick up a copy of Scott Meyer's Effective C++. I've heard it described as 'a useful guide on how to move your foot slightly out of the way of the C++ Gatling Gun you're waving around'..

Good points uplink, although with software like Word it has a much longer lifespan and the value there is in the standard.

Also agree on the try before you buy thing – it's why most publishers will insist on a demo version for PSN / XBox Live / Steam.

Piracy is something that can't be stopped, and it's arguable that attempts to do so (draconian DRM measures etc) do more harm than good.

The thing is, the market for DS and PC development is terrible, which would suggest that piracy is having a strong negative impact.

All the recent PC titles I've worked on are pretty much exactly the same as the console versions – there's no point in adding extra features, or taking advantage of high end graphics cards because the game won't sell enough to make it worthwhile.

There is extra work to do on a PC version though – not a huge amount (compatability etc), but even that is enough to make most publishers question whether they want to bother, the market is so poor.

And soon enough there won't be any new DS games to pirate, as all the developers will have gone out of business.

There's little enough money in DS game development as it is, publishers don't like the platform because of rampant piracy, and no one in their right mind would base a business model on DS development these days.

There is a counter argument that games are too expensive, and would I agree with that – the cut taken by retailers, distributors and publishers is huge. Still not a good reason to take something without paying though.
