In principle I don’t think a light smack on a young child is wrong in certain circumstances (eg child running into road) but, like clubber, with my two it’s never been necessary. Whether that’s down to luck in having two fairly “good” kids I don’t know.

My view is that i never saw drugs help anyone. If it is a crutch for something it really wont help. If you are shy cocaine [ or alcohol] is not the answer etc

Hmmm … Agree in theory, however as a fairly shy, introverted person, drinking heavily and taking drugs in my 20’s allowed me to be the life and soul of the party rather than the saddo in the corner.

As such, I’ve always been rather grateful that drugs (I include alcohol obviously) exist.

Yep Hill St is very nice. Easy stumble home from the Shakey too (not that it’s all that these days, not like when Mad Ernie ran it, but still not a bad boozer).

Of course it should. How alcohol is legal but cannabis / skunk isn’t amazes me.

I’ve told my daughters (11 and13) that if in a few years they end up hanging round the park with their mates as a lot of teenagers do, whilst I’d rather they just drank soft drinks and chatted, if it comes down to it I’d rather they smoke the occasional joint than neck cheap cider / vodka / whatever. My wife, who’s never smoked dope, has no problem with me telling them this.

Wells Road: if it’s before (i.e. town side) of Broadwalk then yes, close to Totterdown which is great with good pubs. Other side, nothing wrong with it at all but I wouldn’t personally.

Duckmoor Rd – yep close to top of North St which is great for eating and drinking.

Recently bought an LG smart TV (47″ rather than 32″ admittedly) from John Lewis and very pleased with it. HD is stunning as you’d expect but most SD feeds are very good as well. Dunno about audio quality as we have it hooked up to a sound bar.

Sister and her husband had a beige Austin Montego years ago (I know, I know).

BiL come out one morning to go to work, starts car and thinks firstly “hmm, engine seems louder than usual”, and secondly, “I can see the engine!”

Someone had come onto their drive in the night and nicked the bonnet!

dirty – I think you meant ‘Knowle West’. The rest of Knowle is a pretty good area to live. Same for Totterdown and (since it was mentioned), most of Bedminster.

Bristol’s changed a lot since 2002 (which was when I moved back here as it goes…)

Get the facts straight please. We are in Lower Knowle, where the elite live 😉

Fawlty Towers? No bloody chance. It’s damn near comedy perfection, any attempt to remake it would be utter shite. Guaranteed.

    Generally Radio6.

Though had daytime Radio1 on in the car recently for the kids and found, for the first time in about 30+ years, that I could not only stand it, but quite enjoyed it. Quite disturbing.

Superfii – that route’s not bad, but there’s far better around. If you let me know how long you want to ride for once over the Severn bridge (factoring in tea and cake stops 🙂 ) I’ll put a route together if you want.

“Leverage”. Hear it about 50 times a day at work.

Ex boss : “we need to leverage capability from x team”

Me : “so we need them to help us?”

    Ex boss : “err, yes”.

    FFS.

Not sure I’ll be able to do a Tuesday, but I’m definitely up for another Welsh ride. I’ve discovered some more great roads since the last one too 🙂

If you guys come up with some dates I’ll make it if I possibly can.

Dunno, I’m 47 and sure as hell don’t consider myself middle aged. Never really moved on from riding bikes (pedal and motor powered) and getting drunk. Never intend to either.

    Very nice.

Have they painted the inside of the jaws as well? Still they’re easy to replace.

Yes. I’ll wait and see if it effects operation at all. I’ve already found a place that sells replacements, about £14 iirc.

Agree somafunk, I still think they’re the best looking MTB shoes ever produced.

Poohbahs were my first SPD shoe over 20 years ago. Still got them in the cellar, my soles stayed intact, probably down to the feeble amount of power I put out and Jeycore riding style.

Re: the servicing. Avoid main dealers like the plague and find a good back street specialist, you’ll save a fortune. A mate helped me do the valve clearances on my VFR – it was very fiddly and definitely a 2 man job, but not as hard as I’d expected.

I’ve not ridden a V-Tech one, but I don’t trust any Honda with a camchain (I don’t think they’ve been a problem, I’m just old fashioned enough to be a bit paranoid about them).

Ditto. I remember the VFR750S debacle all too well.

    Nice one.

Me: When very pissed after about 6 months of seeing my missus: “I’m not actually asking like, but just suppose, theoretically like, not that I am, but if I ever asked you to marry me what would you say? Not that I am mind, just a theoretical question”

    Her: “I’d say yes”

    Me: “Oh. Wow.”

Got married two years later. Been married 22 years this year.

This is one of the best threads on STW in ages :-). I never had vice lust before – I do now. Spending a lot of time on eBay looking for a new (old) vice for the new workbench in my currently being built garage.

To quote a cliche: the throttle goes both ways.

A VFR will be fine as long as you’re sensible and take time to get used to it. I had a VFR750FV (last of the 750s) for 11 years and they’re great bikes. Apart from the collector box rotting (mine did) and the rectifier failing (mine didn’t) they are pretty much bombproof -I’d happily buy an 11 year old one, especially if I knew the history.

Why not? If cycling to work is not an option then commuting by motorbike / scooter is the next best option. Assuming you’re used to cycling in heavy traffic you’ll have a head start on many if you get a bike licence.

Having a 3 storey extension built at the mo in South Bristol. Not finished yet, but 3/4 of the way through the job I’m very pleased with the builders we’re using and would definitely recommend them. PM me if you want their details.

I can understand some people feeling the need to celebrate – miners or steel workers chucked on the scrap heap because of Thatcher’s policies (though if she hadn’t done it someone else would have).

But most / many of the people celebrating shown in the media (tv news etc) are clearly too young to have been affected by, or remember, the Thatcher era. They could do with a good long look in the mirror.

Love mine. Slightly heavier and slacker angled than my old Salsa Chili Con Crosso, which as I don’t race suits me fine. I reckon it’d be fine to race, though there are probably better CX bikes out there for that.

Not especially harsh, I’ve done 2-3 hour road rides with Bonty CX tyres at 90psi and it’s been fine, comfy and not much slower than a road bike.

    Recommended by me 🙂

Had an iPad mini for a few weeks now. I love it, much prefer it to the kids’ iPads mainly because it’s much lighter and therefore easier to use one handed. Rarely use the laptop now.

I get why people don’t like Apple but as we have a fair few of their products in the house we’ve inadvertently got sucked in to their ecosystem; for all it’s limitations it’s pretty damn good in the main.

All rather pathetic really. (Not the Costello song – that’s superb).
