Continual economic growth (surely the lifeblood of capitalism) based upon the use of fossil fuels is totally unsustainable from an environmental point of view. So ultimately it’s doomed.

Alternative power sources can and will be found.

Where do you think the majority of the car makers’ R&D budget goes these days?

Like politics in general I don’t think the answer lies in choosing one extreme or the othere but blending the positives from all viewpoints.

    Amen to that.

I am far from any kind of economist, but I believe in a free market economy as being the best (so far) model we have, with a couple of noteable exceptions: education, health, utilities (maybe, not made my mind up on that one).

I am a stong believer in the (principle of) the NHS, and that a good, free, education should be available for all.

I read pretty much everything Orwell wrote in my mid-teens.

This thread reminds me I really should re-read it. I wonder how well it’s (or I’ve !)aged.

There will be (hopefully) all season semi-technical trails which Bristol really needs, and the other, old, “interesting” stuff will still be there for those who know where it is to ride.

I struggle to see anything negative in all this.

    Capitalism: flawed, deeply flawed.

However no one has yet come up with a better, workable, model.

Samsung NC10 here. It’s great apart from not very good battery life (about 3 hours).

Tell her to swivel, get your licence, buy a 1 litre sportsbike and rag the hell out of it.

It’s what she wants deep down. You knows it.

Anyone remember Revolver Records on the Triangle in Bristol? Loved that place.

Once listened to a Motorhead ep (ep huh? Showing my age) in there on headphones and thought “blimey, Motorhead have changed their sound, speeded up a bit”. Bought it anyway, got home and realised that although a 7″ it was 33rpm but the shop guy had played it at 45rpm.

Ep. 33rpm. 45rpm. Buying a new stylus. God I’m feeling nostalgic. Can even remember what certain record shops smelt like.

    I’ll stop now……

In my teenage years vinyl LPs were a kind of currency. I’d spend the majority of my pocket money / allowance on new or (more often) second hand albums, then when I was skint and needed cash for booze and fags for the next gathering down the park I’d sell a few back to the second hand store.

    Do that with downloads young’uns.

I’ve bought small stuff (headsets etc) from the US with no probs at all, and didn’t get stung for VAT or import duty.

It is a toss-up though. Assume the price you are paying will have VAT and import tax added – if still a good deal go ahead. If you get lucky and the parcel comes in under the HMRC radar then you end up with an unexpected bargain!

    My view:

    – separate thread every week, set on a Sunday night to allow for planning of rides.

    – MTG should set the theme as it was his idea originally, and pass it out to the forum when he runs out of ideas.

If we’re including motorbikes 172mph on the speedo (2008 ZX6R), probably about 165mph actual. Should have been scary, wasn’t. Modern sportsbikes are unbelievably good.

It’s why I’ve changed to a naked (Aprilia Tuono) – lots of fun but mainly at >120mph speeds due to the windblast.

57mph off the top of Dundry hill just south of Bristol. Kept wondering what would happen if something broke on my my bike.

hopster – that’s my local (road) downhill – think my best down there is 55mph

This is SO going to come across as willy-waving, but surprised at the number of people struggling to hit 50mph* (unless they live in Norfolk…).

Find a steep, longish hill with no side roads or steep bends, tuck in (chin on stem, elbows in) and just let it roll. I don’t weigh a lot (<11 stone) but can hit 50mph pretty easily.

*bike computer speed, so probably a couple of mph overstated.

59.5mph in mid-Wales on my roadbike (Litespeed Sirius, now sadly deceased 🙁 ) during a Sportive. When I checked my speed and saw that I was GUTTED that I didn’t get 60mph.

Was expecting a new top speed in the Alps when I rode La Marmotte, but there was a head wind coming up the descent off the Galibier so I didn’t even hit 50mph.

CharlieMungus, perhaps you’d care to reveal the experience that has led to your views on the church – maybe then I’ll treat your views / utterings with respect.

I forgot the question mark. Apologies.

“yes you cannot say all cathlolics are messed up and not to be trusted it is just silly.”

Yes, a fair point. However most of the predictable STW hysteria whenever religion is mentioned p*sses me off greatly.

I have no problem with people saying religion is a load of old tosh (men in silly hats etc), as I have aleady said I am not a believer myself. However I do have a problem with the regular STW outpouring of vitriol against the church, simply because most of it comes from people who have never been near a church in their lives.

Hence my view of the RC church may be “silly”, but that makes it no less valid on this forum, and I am happy to be educated……

    aka_Gilo

Ah – my posts have appeared :-/

I have made it very clear that my view on the RC church is not based on (much) personal experience.

The usual STW tirades against organised religion are not (apparently) based on any personal experience.

Therefore my view is not invalid, however I am happy to hear any views of people who know far more about the RC church than me. I have yet to hear any.

    Oh dear……

If you want an adult conversation (I left the schoolyard many years ago) I’m happy to continue.

If you take the easy way out “I’m so cynical, I’m cleverer than you”, carry on.

you really have no idea what you are talking about, you realise this sounds like ‘Christians who are like me are fine, but those other ones…Dangerous!!’

Au contraire, as I have already stated I have almost a lifetime’s experience of the church, albeit C of E. Hence I know exactly what I am talking about.

My views on the RC church are based on very little personal experience, hence I am happy to be contradicted by any practising Catholics, or anyone with far more knowledge of the Catholic church than me.

CharlieMungus, perhaps you’d care to reveal the experience that has led to your views on the church – maybe then I’ll treat your views / utterings with respect.

Couldn’t be arsed to read much of this thread, but my take on this:

As someone who grew up going to church (C of E), went to a church school (C of E), has been around churchy people most of my life, but has never had any kind of faith / belief, and has relatives (by marriage) who are Catholics….

C of E = Really fairly harmless, well meaning, wooly, nothing too much to be scared of, won’t employ mind-bending tactics to ensnare your children.

Roman Catholics = properly ****ed up, attracts really quite odd / unhinged people, wouldn’t trust my kids anywhere near them.

FWIW I am playing the system to get my kids into a local, very good C of E funded school. (Hence church attendance forms part, a big part, of the selection criteria)

    * No offence intended to any Catholics on here, I know there are a few who have faced totally unwarranted abuse in the past.
