I run two chains with power links, change them every couple of rides. They last forever and mean I have a nice clean chain lubed like new every week. Easy to clean when off, no faf takes a few minutes!

Baildon moor and Shipley glen, boilerplate! Came a cropper on iced up cattle grid, almost broke ankle. Still good to be out and most doable once had almost totally let down my swamp things …

Keep mine totally clean after every ride and before hand spray loads of wd40 on it. Have done over the years some total mud, snow, crap condition rides and it’s never let me down . Gets caked in shite but still works if it’s used throughout ride and got enough oil on it, but it needs to be squeaky clean from start! If your not convinced tape a bit of foam from tube to cover .

Talas? It’s fantastic on my 5AM! It gives me 3 bikes on any ride. Put it down for up hill or standard ST approach steep and gnar and it’s let out. It does feel 2 very different bikes and some might not like that but I adapt. Why not do the patriot? Saving my pennies for one!

Been vegie for 25 years, wife and child are not. Don’t preach vegetarianism , believe in my choice. But it I believe it is true that IF the world population grows as expected we can not sustain meat production as our main protein sourse. Doesn’t effect you? It will do!

I’m 5.9 and have an 18 5AM thought it was too big in lbs but advice insisted otherwise based upon my riding style, have thought about it since but don’t regret it, it doesn’t leave the ground easily but I like it down hill with big hits. This year I’m going to buy a patriot and the dilemma there is worse!!

Occurs to me he wants what he paid for it more or less, because he bought it and hasn’t used it. Trouble is second hand market doesn’t work like that, like with a new car as soon as you take it out of the showroom it’s worth a whole lot less! Would offer him 1800 for it, that’s what it’s worth, used or not.

I’m setting off from malt shovell at top of baildon at 12 for either down back of moor and your cheeky trails or if your interested back over to buck wood and Calverly, your welcome to to join, steady plod in the wind.

Ey up lad, best bit of kit on my bike is a sticker , it says hand made in Halifax! A couple of miles from where me and t whippet live! Awfully good bicycle by the way, make sure you spec with lots of hope goodies! But don’t scrimp on the casset, XTR only!

OMG thank god it’s not just me! Conscious that the road climbs I’m against are put up by road boys with too much tarmack under their wheels….

Based in Baildon, do Shipley glen, Buck Wood, Calverley, baildon moor, stainburn and anything else local in the winter, more often off to Dales or Peaks when there is more light. Weekends only at the moment, email andyjames2@me.com if any use.

Ehhhhhr, really? That’s a bit keen, although I do run 2 chains and clean it every ride, I am obsessed with chain hygiene …

Bit of both sometimes, there was clearly stuff getting in there more than the run of the mill trail dirt. Was a bit obsessed with some cheapo engine degreaser off the market, great on the chain but shouldn’t have used it else where. Quite like how noisy they are.

Daft as it sounds how do you clean your bike? Used to use a degreaser and hose pipe on highish pressure and found that it did over time penetrate my hope hubs which at one point needed servicing every six months. Stopped it and they are fine….

Think it’s a bit of mythe! In my 30s left my wife and lived in a flat above a chipy. Changed my job. Started mountain biking when I couldn’t climb anymore. Then changed job again, moved away. Didn’t ever think I would have kids, met someone and had a little girl within a year at 40.

The point? I think we don’t stop changing, don’t suddenly begin an existence that defines our life from then on. My mate summed it up, am about to lose my job and in talking to him about it and saying I regretted taking a tempory contract he said something … Every job is temporary! Looking forward to being a house husband and not having to take my little girl to the child minder every day. If the mid life cricis exists then I have had about 4!

That’s brilliant, cheers matey! Thought it was more than I found. Never really thought of going down there for my local bimble but fed up of baildon moor when I don’t have a pass out to get to the dales or peaks. It was good and sloppy today , swampthings got a good testing.

    Cheers again!

Na, it’s because the chain pivots do not free in time to release from the teeth. The cause is lubrication of the chain and it’s cleanliness , had it with a new bike… Sometimes the tolerances in the chaine links is out just a minuscule amount. Solution … Take your chain off, clean it in turps, oil it with Wd40 (I know it’s usually pants but you don’t want any stickiness in there) and then keep ridding. As the chain wares and the tolerances even it will stop. Set ups and mechs are all a mythe! Honest.

On an unrelated note, if you want true chain harmony run 2 chains with a powe link and swap them every other ride, do it from new and you will save a fortune a d have that new chain feel all the time, it takes 2 mins!

Riding west Yorkshire yesterday miss timed a jump, landed in a flop in biggest muddy puddle total right hand side immersion. Lay there for a moment feeling the cold gloopy mush soak in. Felt great! Got home to find note door from wife saying do not bring dirt into house as she had just cleaned floor! She was shopping , I texted her the words “naive darling, get real!” top day… Cleaned bike, cleaned me, loads of dirt in kitchen, Bonza!

Got a 5AM, it’s great. Bit heavy but it goes anywhere and love the tallas forks on it but they need a service every year. Why don’t you bite the bullet and go for a patriot, that’s my spring purchase.

Just fitted them for the first time, don’t usually bother with ‘winter’ tyres. OMG they are fantastic! Nothing magical, don’t chew up the trail… it’s muddy, we leave tracks! But I can ride my local trails at summer speed not winter standoffishness if you see what I mean. Tougher on the road and to climb? Yea, that’s better for my winter fitness regime!

They don’t make me a better rider, just take my winter skills to a different level.
