A lot of bikes from a few years ago ended up getting delivered with a bunch of random parts didn’t they, from COVID disruption and the container shop that blocked the Suez canal? Maybe something else has been fitted.

Just waking this one up again, finally got round to trying to fit the Nukeproof ZS56 with reducer race someone linked earlier but with the old lower cup removed the headtube actually measures 54mm so I take it I need to find a ZS54 with a suitable reducer crown race?

I also notched the frame slightly when tapping the old cup out so will have to file the burr down a bit I guess.

Should have accepted my lack of expertise and took it straight to shop to sort but you live and learn!

I now work in an office and am sitting down for 7 hrs per day.

This will be a big contributing factor. Try and get some movement in through the day, once an hour a quick walk about at the least, and a longer walk in your midday break if you can.

I definitely am having trouble choosing which one I think I’ll go for… 1x or 2x, Ti or alloy, hmmmm

Yeah it happens to me too. I swear I haven’t been looking at them online every other day for a month…

That’s what happened last time round but they wouldn’t entertain anything close to what I can get from other providers this time. She even said I can’t get anywhere near price wise so you’d be better off leaving.

I had one from a couple years later than that, but of the same ‘era’ if you like, and it was probably suited most to long days in the saddle over flattish terrain. The last of the old school cross country geometry.

Reviews from the time even suggest it was a very short bike and discuss potentially sizing up.

Toe overlap bothers me and I’ve had my bike four years. It’s easy enough to avoid happening but if you end up doing a lot of slower twistier stuff like navigating tight gates and cycle lane infrastructure it just becomes annoying.

Rather have one less thing to think about if it could be avoided.

What a strange tyre choice! I’m classing that as a 600 quid bike as there’s no way I wouldn’t be sticking some decent tyres on it day one, but still a good deal for someone.

Not a fan of Guides either but for the price you can’t moan as they still get specced on 3 grand bikes quite often.

Yeah I watched that video a few days ago. Can’t say I’ve ever really had an issue with current hub designs that warrants the lengths this one has gone to, usually sealed cartridge bearings last a very long time in hubs now and aren’t hard to replace anyway. But it was interesting in an ‘enginerding’ way.

It’s a fun sounding toy but I reckon after one or two uses it would sit on the shelf as another gadget that doesn’t get used but you look at once a year and say ‘i should really get that out more’ but never do.

If you like it just pay the balloon and run it into the ground, as it’s a diesel you’d presume they will eventually offer a scrappage scheme in years to come so you’ll get something back out of it at the end?

Looking at a Sonder Camino after 4 years on my decathlon road bike. It was 500 quid and I only expected to have it for a year or so to see if I like drop bars but it ended up chugging along for much longer so it’s done it’s duty now and will be retired to commuting and errands.

Neither, both look a bit depressing.

Surely it would cost more to change than to just stump up the extra insurance cost for a couple of years?

Can the under 22s not pay their own way for use of the vehicle presumably they have jobs if they are driving?

Me neither, ours is 23 years old now so if anyone touches it it’ll probably break, or they’ll condemn it because they can’t be arsed to find parts.

Can’t really tell what your question is but yes the large black cable at the bottom is a main incoming supply. It might be the only one or there may be others in the building too if there are 6 meters

Even if it wasn’t coincidental what would you do? There’s really no way of pinning it on them so can’t see them entertaining taking responsibility.

FFS, once again thick people who accept what a salesperson tells them and don’t do thier own homework to check end up better off than those who did some due diligence…

Why would they end up better off? Better off than who, people who weren’t taken advantage of?

It’s no less peaceful than any time in the last 40 years, if you count from the Vietnam war, the Falklands, Iraq-Iran war, Serbia/Croatia/Kosovo etc, first gulf war, invasion of Iraq, Afghanistan, the West bombing Libya, it’s never been any less heated than it is now really.

Nobody has to touch the West as we are doing well enough at destroying ourselves from within

I am cursed because I do have mechanical sympathy, I used to regularly wash and clean my cars, keep the tyres pumped up weekly, don’t idle my vehicles, checked the oil and coolant regularly, have them serviced and maintained on time, however despite that I’ve had more bad luck with expensive repairs and accidents than most people I know.

I meticulously looked after my last car, the paint still failed on the roof, I punctured two expensive tyres a week after fitting them, an injector went and flooded the sump with petrol which cost 800 quid, the gearbox broke at 60k miles and needed a 2 grand repair, then a month later it was crashed into and written off.

Then my colleagues who take on expensive lease cars and never check a single thing, let their tyres go bald because they never have MOTs to remind them, miss their required services by thousands of miles and never check a single thing themself just trundle along in a stress free motoring life without worrying about anything then hand the car back after 3 years and move onto the next one.

Sometimes having mechanical sympathy doesn’t actually gain you anything hence why people don’t bother learning it.

Do I want a gravel bike?

Actual “gravel” riding does not appeal

    Then, no.

No, none of the RockShox or Fox forks do. All the fancy features are on smaller brands.

That’s a shame, I’d say it was the most useful feature on a suspension fork that I’d ever had, could really dial it in for small bump sensitivity and removing initial stiction.

I wonder why brands dropped it.

Do pikes not have adjustable negative air chambers anymore? Increasing the negative air chamber pressure should increase small bump compliance considerably although I admit my last experience of one was ten years ago now!

Have you had any other forks on the bike? Some bikes just ride harsh because of the frame stiffness, wheels etc.

I think a big fear in some men as well is if they speak up they may lose a sense of autonomy or become emancipated by well-meaning supporters.

@BruceWee , I guess the point they are making is if you keep it all to yourself you give nobody else a chance to help where they could have. It’s probably targeted at a different end of the spectrum to the many that have sought help and received none.

I agree it feels quite victim blaming, however.

The video implies the man should have perhaps asked his wife for help, while that is clearly the correct thing to do there are sadly an awful lot of terrible relationships out there where people see shame in their partner not being able to support themself and in those cases asking for help isn’t the answer, ending the relationship is.

Seen it all to often men thinking they are stuck in a marriage or relationship where they can’t be vulnerable but can’t face the shame of divorce so choose the only other path they see available.

I can relate to almost all of that (except the crying at toy story?). December was a blur work wise and I’d mentally thrown the towel in by the end, Christmas and New Year hasn’t given me much of a boost of energy and yesterday first day back was a write off.

Today was a bit better though, I think you do need to ease back in…

Has he thought it through though? If cryogenics does eventually work, and they re-animate him in a few years, he’ll live a flat broke existence because he spent it all on cryogenics.

Just leave a few quid in the bank first and compound interest will work it’s magic, seem to recall it worked for Fry in Futurama anyway.

I’ve used microSHIFT stuff before and it’s generally at least on par with SRAM NX but at a better price, good to know their customer service is decent too.

Not just the rain, the winds are relentless. I can’t remember a time that we had such strong wind for this prolonged of a time. It’s been storm after storm back to back.

Still, I promised myself I wouldn’t quit riding during the winter this year and have to build all the fitness back up in spring like usual so a ride shall be had this weekend.

Measured the head tube today and it is a 44mm upper 56mm lower. I think the suggestions to just replace the thing with a proper headset myself are sensible rather than deal with Decathlon…

Any idea what a shop would charge to fit a headset if i supplied it? Am i better off investing in a headset press so i can do it myself in future?

Saw a fair amount of roadies out and about, think a lot of people park their MTB for the winter.

Thanks both I’ll give it a measure tomorrow at some point and check what the definite size is 👍

What’s that jagged hole in this pic. Not where the cables go through the frame hopefully… If it is then I would be getting a file in there if poss….

No internal routing on this bike.
