Red Bull Rampage Diary 3: Go Big, But Come Home

Eastridge is a fantastic spot to base a ride around. It’s got whatever you want DH, Enduro DH , xc, and more natural single track than you can shake a stick at right on it’s doorstep.
There must be a reason why they have run every type of race event from there over the years. Only this year I know that they have run the CRC enduro through there, held a DH enduro and many dh events there in the last year alone.
When you get tired of the woods you can nip up onto the Stiperstones without touching any tarmac and loose a good few hours buzzing around some good rocky natural trails.
We ride out from there most Thursday nights for a couple of hours of good riding easily covering 15-20 miles and getting in a good 3000 ft of climbing.
I would recomend starting from the Stiperstones Inn for no other reason than it’s a good place to finish off the ride, not only for the good beer but also the fantastic VFM food.If ever you want to come along on a ride drop me a pm and I can let you know a time and place etc.
AdeAirconAdeFree MemberThe guy in green, jumping, is a very fast chap by the name of Jim Tipp.
He likes doing the crc enduros on a 29 rigid single speed and is usually in the top twenty home. I know he’s pretty quick as I try and hang onto his wheel most tuesday nights.
Dunno how he did as part of a two man team but it looks like he was flying!
AirconAdeFree MemberIt was indeed a cracking day, I managed to get a good start and missed all the traffic on the first decent, I got a good run up onto the spine of the mynd but boy was it hot! The decent down to the Wentor side was a cracking fast open track. After the first feed station I feel they could have taken us a slightly different route up onto the Stiperstones through the Gatten and the Hollies. The drop down into the Stiperstones Via the Beach was as always a blinder. The single track through Eastridge I think is one of the best going and I’m glad that it was dry because in the wet it’s a lot more interesting!! The Batch survived ok but I think there are better decents around here so ain’t too worried about its over use as I don’t go down it that often.
I had a cracking ride and managed it in 4.47 so was well chuffed as I’ve not done an enduro for years. I clocked it at 60.2k on my memory map 2800.
My thanks to all the marshall’s and people that helped out, and to Mr Lloyd for setting out yet another cracking ride.
AdeAirconAdeFree MemberThe Mynd is only five miles from me so I know it well. You can put a good loop together with Stiperstones and Eastridge etc. I could be up for a ride out as well if you like. I’m doing the marshbrook enduro on the 3rd so need to get some training in.

AirconAdeFree MemberSorry to hijack the thread but what paint issues did you have with the stumpy? I to have a 2010 elite (silver) and have lots of areas where clear coat is lifting and the alloy is starting to go white under the paint.
As a bike to ride it’s a great all rounder, I find it spot on for the natural trails here in mid wales and good for trail centre stuff as well as epic all day enduro’s.Watch out for the triad shock, mine has been back 4 times under warranty ( it always seems to go on cold rides) but I do ride a lot over the winter, 2-3k miles pa

AirconAdeFree MemberFeeling sick can be caused by dehydration, when you have the a/c on do you have the recirculated air on or off?
having the a/c serviced does not clean the internal heat exchanger (evaporator) but if you have a problem with bacterial growth on the evap you will soon know as it really stinks.
Most deoderisers are nothing more than perfume the good treatments will normally take 1-2 hours to do and cost £80-£120ish.most of the faults that I see that cause bad smells in the car are down to blocked condensate tubes leading to water build up in the heater box.
Sorry for bad spelling but have been working through the night and am not really with it at the mo.

AirconAdeFree MemberT4 is the one to have. I've had mine from new (98) and it's now done 271,000 miles and never let me down. Still does over 110 leptons on private roads! 34 to the gallon. Space, Grace and Pace.
But if you go for one make sure it's the 2.5TDI 102bhp or if you can find one a 150bhp one.
AdeAirconAdeFree MemberGoing should be ok up there, I'm only five miles from the west side and going is pretty good around here at the mo.
Start out from wentnor and go up prollymoor straight then climb to the skyline go straight over then down minton batch (and see if you can stop yourself smiling at the bottom!!!)

AirconAdeFree MemberWell we're back from mach. They've had a lot less snow than us and what little was there was pretty slushy. There was quite a lot of black ice on the forest roads, just to keep you awake.
On the start of the final decent there was a fair bit of ice but conditions were pretty good. We even dropped lucky with the rain as it dried up as we pulled into the carpark.Took us just over two hours round trip but that was starting from the middle of Mach total of 19 miles and 1800ft of climbing.
AirconAdeFree MemberSo what is it with xmas then? My dad died of cancer 20 years ago on the 24th and this year on the 23 I was with my mum to be told that she has a brain tumor and has around 6 months if she responds to radio therapy.
still reeling from it as up until two weeks ago she was still walking the dog for 4 or 5 miles a day and could hold her own on any hill walk.
Therapy starts first week of the new year. Now there's something to look forward too!
AirconAdeFree MemberAldi and Lidl do small compressors with accesory kits for around the fifty quid mark.
I have one on my van which is dead handy.
You just plug in to the mains to refil the 25L tank and then leave it till you need it. Has blow gun, spray gun and tyre inflator. Beats messing about with track pumps!AirconAdeFree MemberI have just got a 2010 stumpy elite for £2000, it replaced an 07 epic expert.
I have only ridden it a few times and am very pleased with it. Climbs better than I thought it would, almost as good as the epic. Suspension is very plush and I tend to run with it in the pro pedal most of the time.I didn't rate the stock tyres much so have changed them for some trail rakers, but have yet to try them in the muck.
The silver is growing on me and looks good with the red detail on the wheels but I will be swaping these with my hope hoops ( I like the CLICK ).
Was close call between a lappie 314 though!
AirconAdeFree MemberBorn and bred within two miles of where I live now. I have worked all over the uk and europe living out of hotels for weeks at a time.
Nothing beats the feeling of coming home!
Maybe it helps that Eastridge, Longmynd, Stiperstones are all in biking distance and LLandegla, Nant y arran, Coed y brennin are only 40-50 mins drive.
Pure luck that I was born where I was really!!!Ade
AirconAdeFree MemberTankslapper is your man.
