I only have one grumble about a bike shop. I had bought a new bike and after a couple of rides awful noises were coming from the bottom bracket. As I was about to set off on a 400 mile ride I was eager to get it sorted. Unfortunately my lbs had a repairs backlog so I was sent to their rotherham branch.

When I went to pick up the bike they had put a super cheap crank set on – when I questioned this he said ‘its the same – they do come in different colours love’ . I did my best to keep a lid on it and led him to the orange bikes display and asked him to show me where in their range they used such shitty components.

He apologised and sorted out the right ones, I did get a decent apology from my lbs too.

Although it annoyed me it got sorted and that is the only time in over 20 odd years of going in bike shops – so I cant grumble.

    @jackthedog

The showers arebin the public loos in the town hall, I used them for quite a while when I changed jobs as my new building didnt have showers.

Originally the toilets opened at 8.30 which was fine, then they moved it to 9. I complained via the local cycling group (I want to say ride sheffield but not sure if it was them). They changed the start time back to 8.30.

After a while the toilet attandant started giving me receipts for my 20p – I presume working out the cost effectiveness of the earlier opening.

So in a nutshell not sure what time they are open now, but so infuriating as if they promoted the facility it would be a real asset

Count yourself lucky you only have two – think of the people who suffer with the bizarre evolutionary throw back of supernumerary nipples

A girl in our school had an extra one – cant remember her name other than she was called tripple nipple (it was the 80’s – pre anti bullying or political correctness! )

No you dont have to wear cycling clothes but the reasons I do are; invariably the weather is in the wet side, I tend to wear tailored dresses and pencils skirts to work, and even if you wore jeans they do wear out quickly when you ride in them all the time. So I always opt for lycra.

As for the shower, I would have one in the morning anyway but im happy to get up get dressed brush my teeth and then shower when I get in – saves my heating cost too and when all 4 of my kids were at home it was far easier than waiting for the bathroom to be free. I always sweat loads on my ride in – obviously sheffield is not flat but also I do like to ride quickly. I wouldn’t be happy to sit in sweaty clothes all day

I have cycled lots all my life and it just fits, in fact if anything it makes my commute quicker.

But its an outside looking in thing, girls (and im sure some blokes too) imagine it to be far harder to take it up and do it proficiently.

As for the hair and beauty aspect you’d be surprised where you find showers. Public showers in Sheffield city center with hair driers are only 20p. Why this never gets promoted during bike week etc confuses me (and I have mentioned it to the organisers). I no longer use them as after some pestering we got some installed at work.

And we are included increasingly a society that has to have all the gear when they embark on a new hobby – and price the idea out of their reach before they’ve even tried it.

    M1llh0use –
MemberI’ve had to resort to using the microwave as I keep burning the sugar to the bottom of the pan.

Unless you are actually making toffee then best not to heat the pan with sugar in it – unless gently heating butter and sugar as said above.

If you are burning your popcorn try heating the oil with only three kernels in when they pop turn the heat down a bit, remove from the heat and fish them out, add the corn and then put the lid back on and shake them to mix. Return to the heat and they should all pop quicker and less risk of burning some.

pitchpro2011 – MemberYou probably sucked at your job to be getting ‘performance managed’ so often. If you do your job correctly it is practically impossible to manage you out of a business in this way. To set you up for constructive dismissal I would have to give you tasks to do with insufficient time or support to do the job, which in return leaves me wide open for a bullying case. Bullying cases in court are won 90% of the time because the manager doesn’t know the difference between correct performance management and just plain picking on someone, either way that person was usually underperforming.POSTED 47 MINUTES AGO # REPORT-POST

Let me guess – you consider you have perfected ‘performance management’ and may even carry it out all the time

But maybe with better management and support you wouldn’t have to bully put your staff under ‘performance management’ all the time

So maybe you just suck at your job? Either way an unpleasant post – when really its good news for him to be moving on and he has been very open about the stress he has been through.

I always put salt or sugar on in the pan and shake it up, then tip the popcorn into a big (as in huge) bowl. chuck a dollop of butter in the still warm pan it will melt without any further heating and dribble it over the popcorn whilst stirring it around a bit

Or if I want a real sugar rush toffee – sprinkle a layer of demerara sugar in the bottom of a clean dry pan, heat syeadily without stirring until it melts, when it starts to bubble take it of the heat and stir in a bit of butter and splash of milk or cream. Again dribble over the popcorn.

Niche – the last resort at 4, I tried to train myself that if i was about to go in niche it was actually time to go home!

I try to do the same now with napoleons on eccy rd – even though you may be sat at a table and being waited on – its still nothing more than a glorified grown up kebab shop at 2am after several rums . .

I could lend you an epilator if you want to make the name last longer on your chest – you would be in a whole world of pain though – which may show her how keen (desperate) you are

Or at the very least the pain would distract you whilst you get over the fact she’s not interested

Jeez just read that back and it sounded harsh – was trying to be funny 🙂

I had two years where I really suffered, the first year I had several courses of antibiotics. The second it just wouldn’t shift, I saw an ent specialist and he said it may be hayfever related (never had it before)

I started taking antihistamines and it did eventually clear. That was 10 years ago and I have taken antihistamines when I get a bit sniffly at the beginning of the year and it hasnt rroubled me much since.

However this year it came on horribly and ive had two lots on antibiotics already -caught me before the tree pollen usually gets me, I have started the antihistamines now and it seems to be settling the symptoms and keeping it at bay with the steam inhalations.

    Is that just me?

I have used some, had to borrow a pair of wheels once to do a 130 mile ride, really couldnt get used to it. Are there really no quiet options -apart from modifications?

As always real situations are far more complex than a few comments on a thread.

As there seems to be so much concern about my mental heath from this I can say that at the time of his accident I was actually receiving counselling for another matter. Obviously after the accident it did give me the opportunity to work through my feeling and discuss how to help my youngest.

We have all come a very long way in two years.

I have accepted the accident and the subsequent problems. As a few people have noted eye injuries are particularly difficult to deal with so as much as I have accepted it it is still difficult to have conversations about eyeballs impaled on metal sticks – I suspect many people who aren’t emotionally attached to him would also struggle with that.

Some really helpful comments and I will be looking into options for him further

What I mean is we have addressed the issues of what actually happened and the feelings about the boy who pushed him and they dont seem to be the problem.

The thoughts are primarily grusome eyeball related thoughts – some are about what he imagined to have happened not what did happen in reality.

In comparison it would be like asking if thinking about the moment of impact would help you get over issues of being hit by a car?

johndoh – MemberS’alright – I was accused of having an alcohol problem last week because I didn’t take my girl straight to A&E.

I am sure any of you parents know something like this does not get brushed under the carpet – it has been a massive part of our lives for 2 years. All issues regarding the mechanics and politics of he accident have been discussed and are not causing any significant problem

What is left are these intrusive thoughts of the actual trauma. It is a genuine psychology question as to whether it is best for him to face these and work through them or whther it is best to focus on other thoughts

The basis of CBT I believe.

As I have said I keep my upset well hidden, this mornings commments just made me change the discussion to how much improvement he has had.

I agree that he should be able to talk about anything – and all my children do have a habit of telling me everything – whether I like it or not.

My concern is whether it is right to encourage him to focus on these intrusive thoughts (such as the thought that if he looked at the stick he would see his eyeball on it) or to carry on just trying to focus on the posistive and hope the intrusive memories will fade

He got pushed accidetally onto a metal stick that someone had stuck in the ground. Its no mystery just horrible

    adjustablewench
    Free Member

Yes I totally agree – he is still under the surgeons care and probably knows more about eye mechanics than any other 8 year old

We discuss all the tests and surgery – like I say I want him to look forwards and see the improvements. He has no issue with hospitals or of the thought of more surgery. He thinks his surgeon is awesom

Its the memories of the day and the affect of those that concern me

    adjustablewench
    Free Member

I tried to change the subject as the day was incredibly traumatic and I dont know that going over the details will help him move on, and feel going over the details will only reinforce the memories

    adjustablewench
    Free Member

I dont dwell on the day or the time afterwards, and I do my utmost to not show him how upset I am. I just focus on how much better things are now.

And when I say how upset I am, I mean at times when I have been upset. I really do believe he has had a very good outcome so I focus on that.
