Nothing to worry about – it’s unlikely to get very bad in central B’ham. Looking forward to riding home after the xmas party later on though – some decent snow up on the Lickeys.

Glad you enjoyed it, DDC was a good call.

Good choice, I had the adventure version and enjoyed that old school kind of vibe. Have fun!

Yes, I did it on a 29er FS frame – it was a lot of fun, more ‘playful’ (frame and B+ wheels are currently for sale)

Krampus here, great for long distance mile munching but also hooning round the woods. The momentum it gathers is quite impressive!

Got a brand x riser on my Krampus which has been fine – no worries about it here.

Twicewithchips has it – I have two fat bikes, a 29+ and three thin tyred bikes hanging from these which are screwed into a chunky bit of wood.

Just purchased some Giant Connect XR for a bike I’m building. Shape seems similar to those above but approx £15.

Have been using these this week. Pretty good power for the money and the mounts are fine for commuting use.

David @ Atkins if you are reading this Kate needs to know nothing about it!

I saw nothing (as long as you take me for a spin)

The better half is still traumatised after a nice evening spin round the local lanes in my old 944!

+1 Geotechnical Engineering / Engineering Geology after a suitable Masters.

You can move your career in either direction depending on your leanings towards calculation/analysis or ground characterisation/modelling.

However, there is considerable overlap and a sound understanding of both aspects is always useful. You could certainly have a varied and interesting career.

You could consider a Mercedes Viano (Vito passenger vehicle), of which the ‘Long’ version (middle of the 3 lengths) can be found with twin sliders, tailgate, various seat combinations including individual seats on factory rails and a folding table on rails.

I have a Vito of the same length and it is a little shorter than a LWB T5 and no problem to park. I’m about to fit swivels to the front seats.

I’ve just bought a Vito 115 Long Dualiner and am enjoying it so far, it swallows bikes and friends with ease. Quite nippy to drive and fairly relaxing too.

Having had various campers in the past we came to the conclusion that a kombi would be more useful all round – less weight and gubbins to lug round most of the time. We just unclip the seats when going camping, use an Alpkit double dozer to sleep on and a fantastic Decathlon inflatable awning that goes up in a couple of mins for living space.

I started out with a rigid fatty, now on a fatty trail with 120 Bluto. Rigid was fine but I’m now having even more fun and the FS is gathering dust….

Empire and Operation: Mindcrime are two of the best rock/metal albums out there.

Still listen to those now and again, a couple of very accomplished albums.

As a stop gap on my Vagabond I used Dia-compe friction bar ends with SLX 2*10 inc. clutch mech – they worked fine (available for sale :-).

I had the trouble getting hold of the BS-M10’s but luckily found a second hand pair on here so have switched over. They are nice if you can find them!

From the Lickeys it’s a 35min (road) or 45min (almost traffic-free) ride to central Brum, depending on your location. Go for the Barnt Green end if you want to walk to the train station and have a village atmosphere. Easy MWay access and road/mtb rides from the front door.

kazafaza – I ride a large vagabond build (see above) and commute from Lickey to the Axis building, next door to the Mailbox on Mon-Thurs. Drop me an email if you’d like to see the bike.

    STATO – yhm

ciquta – I’ve got approx. 1cm clearance from a 2.0 big apple on Arch EX to my XT front mech – I imagine a 2.35 would be pretty close! They are blooming tight to get on the rims…

The RSP 35mm Trail stem can be had for £35, one came on a bike I purchased and it’s been fine in use. That said, I recently picked up an Alpkit Love Mud stem (not yet used) which seems to be a bargain.

I’ve built mine up and have been commuting on it this week – 10/12 miles each way of road, towpath with a few singletrack diversions thrown in. It’s been great – a sturdy but nimble bike.

I’m pleased with the spec – TRP Hylex brakes, Alpkit flared drops, Arch EX/superstar wheels with 2.0 Big Apples and 2×10 gearing (38/24, 11-36) with dia-compe bar end friction shifters as I couldn’t get hold of the indexed Microshift ones…

Hoping to use it for a mix of commuting/touring when not riding fat/full suss/road.

Ah, yes I rode out offroad to Clent on Saturday and past Walton Hill Farm a few times. I enjoy living in Lickey (Hills) with options for on and off road riding. Probably a bit too quiet for you but accessible via the cross city rail line to Barnt Green.

With both the government and industry supporting the BIM agenda there is a niche in subsurface ground modelling in the geotechnical sector. Offshore projects, tunnelling, underground space plus infrastructure schemes of any decent size are all using more 3D / BIM. Some background in geotechnics and geo data management would be useful if this floated your boat…one way of doing this might be working for a GI contractor, there should be a variety of opportunities open to you.
