2 litres of laxatives? You trying to out-compete the legendary picolax thread?!

When a system boots it looks for a specific device to find the bootstrap code from. I’m not sure you could override that with a USB stick.

You could set-up the BIOS to boot from USB first though and if not found, move to the normal OS.

Vicky – all the more to be behind the ‘alltrials.org’ system where *all* trials, good and bad, all those dropped and left dangling are all registered and their data, good and bad is open for all to see. Full transparency is the key. The natural competitiveness of the industry will then keep everyone on their toes.

And hopefully if that happens the shyster Burzynski can be forced to give his ‘results’ for anti-neoplastons. 😀

Goldacre can point to evidence where falsifying clinical data has occurred, and you can never claim something didn’t happen as it would be trying to prove a negative. Best get all data out.

I have a copy of Bad Science – which focuses on unscientific reportage in all areas of life – and I’ll re-read Chapter 11. I find it hard to believe that he would state *all* companies would do that, as it is not very scientific and he’s particularly anal about that stuff. More likely he would say ‘many’ or a similar phrase. You’ll never get a true scientist to give a 100% guarantee of anything. But I’ll re-read it as you may be correct (see? I’m a scientist by training too…)

To get the update go to ‘settings’ in the XMB and there should be an ‘update’ app there – don’t go to PS Store (it shouldn’t let you).

    Edit:

    Seen this on sony:

System Update – If your PS3 is online, the most straightforward way to update the system software is using the PlayStation 3 itself. Navigate to Settings on the PS3 Home Menu, select [System Update] and then [Update via Internet] and your PS3 will check if you have the latest version. If not, it will download and install it for you.

Under settings in the XMB you can choose the network and whether you are using wired or non-wired. Always been thus.

    Here’s what Sony say: https://support.us.playstation.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/261

*googles Ben Goldacre hating pharmaceutical industry*

Nope, can’t find it. Can you post a link please? I see that he wants to fix the industry: http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/bad-pharma-a-manifesto-to-fix-the-pharmaceutical-industry/%5B/url%5D and is positively anal about having data to back claims (that’s why he is behind alltrials.org). But he hates people pulling things out of thin air such as anti-vaxxers and woo-merchants, though he would change his view if given hard evidence.

Korma-Spoiler: Aye, but the main point was that the protagonist couldn’t which brings up some ideas to ponder over

Yes, and that is what I was considering shortly after starting the book. I may be thick but not that thick! I just found it a bit boring. Each to his own though. Mate at work thinks it is the best book ever. He says he may watch the film but only after he finds a free download.

I must admit I must be strange as I didn’t find the book interesting. It was too linear and I could knew what was happening well in advance. My mates at work were bigging it up a few years ago. (Currently reading the Expanse series which is good!)

Afterwards I found out about OSC’s somewhat nasty views/actions and I gave ‘Speaker for the Dead’ a miss, although I hear ‘Enders Game’ was written in order for SftD could be written.

Apparently OSC is being a bit of a crybaby over the boycott requestsas he wants people to see the film (and hence give him dosh). No thanks, I’ll pass.

I used ratedpeople.com once, for a new alarm system. I got quotes from £350 to £1800 but to be fair they were for massively different systems.

I chose one and had the work done. Chaps came in to fit and took a day but they didn’t understand the alarm system they offered. Every time I opened the front door when I got home the alarm went off! Eventually I found the installers manual and worked out how to do it (tag front door with ‘final exit’ flag).

The service was OK so I wrote an OK review. The website wouldn’t accept it – it kept on saying I was using profanities. I couldn’t find any words that could have been considered rude. I mentioned it to the company and they said they would ‘look into it’.

The only issue I had was the company said they would do a contract for annual maintenance and they have since vanished. I can get in touch with them but it feels like I’m dragging them here to pay them money so I’ve worked out how to replace batteries etc. myself.

Yes Adam, you can change week by week. The same way you could change your broadband or mobile phone provider every week. It’d be stupid, but no-one’s stopping you from doing it.

Not really – it takes up to four weeks to change. It was used in the early days of deregulation to avoid paying as all the DTC flows were all over the shop between companies. You try changing this week to, say, E.On then exactly one week later trying EDF or ScottishPower. No can do until the last one goes through. Then to achieve the best price you have to agree to a lock-in. Which may not be the best price next week. The supermarket analogy is flawed.

The two companies you chose are multi nationals, the clue is in the euro figures. Not so relevant for a discussion of the UK energy market.

This was in response to someone talking about overall profits being shown instead of just the retail side. If you like we can go back to my comment about how retail cries that it has no profit yet generation rakes it in. About 50% of the price we pay goes to the generators, usually attached to the retailers.

I’ll ask you this then, what is an acceptable profit for an energy company to make? Remember that tax is paid on these profits and in the course of their daily business these companies directly and indirectly support tens of thousands of jobs. No profit = no investment = no jobs.

I am not saying that a company cannot make profit. Without it there would be no reason to operate. What I am thinking about is the scale and possible mendacity of companies crying about wafer thin profits which are actually fat ones hidden from view. If not then they wouldn’t be offering long-term fixed-price deals. I also refuse to bow down and worship any company because it brings ‘jobs’. I see a lot of these ‘jobs’ having to be subsidised by the taxpayer through tax credits etc. as they pay far too little. Also I see the same companies offshoring a lot of these ‘jobs’ to increase their profit further to the detriment of the economy.

Where is the tax paid on EDF profits? Is that in the UK or France? EON – is that in UK or Germany? I honestly don’t know, so can’t tell. The only other taxes would be the VAT on the fuel paid for by us.

I’d be for the market to work correctly. It currently isn’t. There are a few large players in a virtual cartel. They all wait until one breaks ranks with pricing then all do it. Mrs T broke up the network into 12 distinct areas, based on their electricity boards. They’ve now been gobbled up by massive firms. I’d be for breaking the market up again to introduce more competition.

If you want to make me ruler of the UK (or world, actually) then I’d be happy to sort it all out and let you know about the acceptable profit.

You can buy gas from centrica, electricity from sse, boiler insurance from another if you choose to. You probably won’t find it the cheapest way though. And certainly in the energy company I used to work for, profits announced were for the whole group, not just retail.

And I can choose week-by-week who to spend with?

And in the electricity company I worked for the discount we got wasn’t as good as if we called our own call centres and asked for the latest deal.

Great, so lets take a look at the company group profits as a good start. Obviously since they are in penury the profits should be about £10m or so? Strange how Eon had > €1200m, EDF > €16100m etc. (Quick google gave those). Yes, they’re absolutely going to go to the wall if they can’t put their prices up whenever they feel like it.

What’s also strange is that I have just received my weekly moneysavingexpert email with power companies offering very long capping of price. A bit like what Milliband was offering, no?

    AdamW

Remember that the energy companies ‘profits’ are only the profits from the end-user selling.

Where do you reckon the energy firms get their power from? They buy/sell every half hour (some say it may be a cartel) but they make the stuff as well as sell it.

A bit like Starbucks saying they can’t pay their taxes because they make a loss. Yes the front-end makes a loss while their internal coffee sellers make a mint selling coffee to themselves.

On the supermarket front I can choose to buy my beans from Aldi, my bread from ASDA, my fruit from Sainsbury’s. And I can choose to change every time I go out every week. Not so with energy providers.

Based on what he said I may actually consider voting Labour next time. I certainly wasn’t going to vote tory.

But, saying that, I actually work within the energy industry and all the hand-wringing by the big firms must be taken with a large amount of salt.

Geofatboy’s videos are interesting. I’d like to save money on the shave and buying something like a Merkur and paraphernalia would be very ‘me’. Unfortunately one of my many major failings is that I am absolutely scared to death of blades. Even looking at a razor blade makes my skin crawl. 😕

I see in his Merkur vid he does *three* passes at a single shave from different directions. Do you lot using DE blade systems do that too?

    @piemonster

Looked at orange one, 10g per 100ml. The bottles are 200ml, so that makes 20g per bottle.

That’s quite a bit. I think the other flavours have different quantity of sugar (11g/12g per 100ml).

    Worry not!

After sale I’m sure you’ll still be propping up the business with subsidies which will be most probably more than we were putting into it in the first place, as per the railways.

I look forward to new colour-coded stamps going from white (first class to deliver within five minutes walk) to black (you’ll be lucky if anyone will deliver it this century).

Lerk – group size (as I guess with every club) is based upon the weather and stuff. When I last led it was the five dales ride and it bucketed down. I managed to get about 10 to turn up to that one. A nice easyish ride last Sunday around Whitwick Woods/Coalville got the numbers up. Other rides such as Hayfield tend to get fewer as its harder.

20 is on the big side for us, usually about 12-15 max. Good bunch of people though and the cakes are marvellous!

I may have a GPX or two if you’re interested. I *think* my email is in my profile if you drop me a line.

    Oi Lerk!

    Webmaster for NATSmtb here.

Suggest you join in then – we were out in Leicestershire last weekend, as you can see from the rides list we’re out in Derbyshire this weekend. Out every weekend with party on 2nd Nov and me leading 3rd Nov (most probably North Notts). Usually get a decent crowd – 20 last Sunday.

Three rides? Lets see (from google calendar/front page). Two cannock’s (there’s great riding around there and a couple of the club are brilliant at sniffing out trails) and a couple yet to be defined depending on weather. Yeah, I see what you mean about it being all the same.

    Sunday, September 15: Cromford
Sunday, September 22: Buxton/Wye Valley or Linacre
    Sunday, September 29: Doctorsgate
    Sunday, October 6: Cannock
    Sunday, October 13: Edale
Sunday, October 20: Shining Cliff or Carsington
    Sunday, October 27: Cannock
    Sunday, November 3: Nottinghamshire
    Sunday, November 10: TBD
    Sunday, November 17: Fox Houses
    Sunday, November 24: Eyam
    Sunday, December 1: TBD
    Sunday, December 8: TBD
    Sunday, December 15: Hope
Sunday, December 22: Christmas butty ride!

As for pines, yes, we ride there frequently, but usually only do a little bit of the Kitchener then move out and about as there are lots of trails in that area. Lots and lots.
