My iMac (27″ 2009 core i7/16GB) takes quite a long start to log in. I have found that spotlight is apparently scanning all my files, and I have no idea why. I have many music files etc. Also there could be something in the depths of the ~/Library directory with a possible spotlight importer causing issues. I’ll most probably set up an ssh session and tracing stuff as I log in via the front end at some point.
A good test is to create a new account and log into it – is it fast? If so it is something to do with your account and not the mac per se.
AdamWFree MemberWith all this lobster comparisons surely the best way to stop the attacks against women by inadequate males shouldn’t they just get a large number of elastic bands and put them over their hands?
AdamWFree MemberThe Fabulous World of Adam
The story of a poor Welsh boy who made good, made fabulous and awsomez while battling the evil hordes of database admistrators. In fantabulous technocolour.
Make billions that one.
AdamWFree MemberI agree. Armagnac is the dog’s danglies.
I’m not very good with spirits so they have to be very smooth for me to go near. Can’t stand whiskey and tolerate brandy. For a nice armagnac I have Clos Martin Folle Blanche VSOP which is pretty good, can also recommend Baron de Sigognac 10 year old.
High street stuff generally I can’t take, but Corvoisier isn’t too bad.
Croeso.
AdamWFree MemberI got a CP for a number of reasons. Apart from love I was scared to death that if something happened to one of us the other would lose the house and all of the joint possessions. I’ve seen this happen to a mate who’s boyfriend died and his family turned up and demanded *everything* he had owned even though they had disowned him well before he died. And refused his long-term partner access to the funeral. There is no hole deep enough for those kind of people. 🙁
We’ll most probably transfer it into a marriage one of these days, if only to really wind up the swivel-eyed lot. I often get strange looks when I mention “my husband”. 🙂 In reality though I reckon that civil partnerships should be phased out and there be just “marriage”. People who believe in God/Allah/Buddha/Flying Spaghetti Monster whatevs can have a ceremony for their beliefs and people who don’t believe can have a nice do with a bit of cake. At some point a contract is signed by both parties which is the same thing.
AdamWFree MemberBuy a mac or put linux on there?
Heaven forfend such action!
Everyone knows that MicroVAXes are where the cool kids are. 😛
AdamWFree MemberShoes, wee therein.
Bombers, own thereof.
And be in awe of the McMoonter, obviously!
AdamWFree MemberUp to over a thousand?
Must be Welsh. Being over down by here, no doubt.
AdamWFree MemberYou can get an Echo Dot which can plug in and do the same if you need Amazon.
AdamWFree MemberI’m just buying an LG 49SJ800V (arrives tomorrow) from Richer Sounds. I have an older 32″ Panasonic, which still works OK but I’m having difficulty reading the text when playing Elite Dangerous on the PS4 so wanted a bigger screen.
Prices for 4k appear to have dropped and the majority of them at that size are now that resolution. Apparently according to work mates Amazon Prime do a lot of 4k stuff. Obviously Netflix has a chunk of 4k too.
I’d sooner not have a smart telly but a really good screen with HDMI ports I can plug boxes into as this year’s ‘smart’ telly is next year’s ‘dumb’ one as services end but you can’t get them. Unless they’re monitors then you need an external tuner.
AdamWFree MemberNo I don’t think it should be different. That’s your position.
Previously musicians of all types made money by selling recordings. You may have heard of them, at one time they were called “records”, “cassette tapes”,”CDs” and even MP3 and AACs. They made a lot more money from that as opposed to streaming.
If a musician was deemed “good enough” they would get a recording contract or position within a ban (or orchestra). They would get an advance but also much more of the money per sale than on streaming. Infortinatrly the more people in a band the fewer micropennies per stream they would get. Hence a huge band would get nothing.
Very few bands with up to a hundred members are are making any profit whatsoever from streaming. Their profits if any come from sales, which is my point. Even small bands who have to practice make diddly squat on streaming. And to get really good they have to practice a lot which means rich parents .
I don’t care whether your job is in the arts or not. Why should you be any different?
AdamWFree MemberBecause it would have to be a hobby for >100 different types of musicians all who live within a certain area and could meet and pay for a rehearsal hall and pay for everything else, like transpiring quite large instruments.
Unless you think they would all fit into your garage of an evening? And practice a 50 minute piece without a conductor in an hour or so?
And I don’t agree with that to be a musician of any type you have to have it as a hobby. Some do which is fine. Some need to pay for their food and accommodation.
I take it that you would quite happily do your job as an unpaid hobby?
AdamWFree MemberYes it does. There are different artists/orchestras bringing out different things in different pieces. And, believe it or not, people are still writing music of that genre *now*. Or is this a “I don’t like it, it doesn’t matter, who cares?” response
it would also mean that the only instruments young uns would study would eventually be limited due to the fact there would be fewer places to go, no point in learning as it would lead nowhere. “Sorry kid no point in thinking about a career in instrument x as you will never get paid as the Beiberites now own the entire music industry”.
AdamWFree MemberAmazing no one has thought of anything but bands. What about classical music requiring a full orchestra? There are many more people to come together – as their job not a hobby – and halls to hire etc to produce a recording then they get virtually nothing per play. Apart from some concerts there will be a crash in the amount of new recordings.
I have amazon streaming but if I like a piece of classical then I try to find it and buy it on CD or high bitrate audio. Without support we will all end up with either old recordings or dreaded Beiberpap.
AdamWFree MemberTotal woo. They did tests where people were asked to work out where water was and where it wasn’t. No-one found it.
If it did work then we’d be all over it for finding all sorts of stuff, especially oil.
AdamWFree MemberDude,
No need for shame. Reading your posts over the years I see that you’re doing what needs to be done but you are one hell of an inspiration.
And, most importantly, a good man.
Donated. I don’t have much social media but I’ll share where I can.
Adam
AdamWFree MemberI’d post a pic of said mutt but they’re in google and every time I try it comes up with a broken link ( https://photos.app.goo.gl/q3l2u2zQdUFbnN5W2 , when caught trying to sneak into bed. 🙂
AdamWFree MemberI would add that other people in the park apparently have had issues/run-ins with him too. As you know if you’re a dog owner you tend to say hello to other dogs and eventually have little chats with their owners during the walk and one of these attacks was observed last year by someone who told MrAdamW that they also had issues with Mr idiot.
I keep wishing I was there when it happens. 🙁
AdamWFree MemberThat looks very fake to me. It’s got bits of Captain America in it for a start.
AdamWFree MemberHad ours done when infinity came out. Am with IDnet, so they contacted OpenReach and a chap turned up, put something on the wires, went to the local box to check which wires were which I guess and test signal strength. Came back and installed a VDSL modem and went. I supplied my own router. Fortunately I’d laid cat5 around the house in places and a while later got one of these: Coredy Access Point which works great but you do need to know what you’re doing to get it working.
AdamWFree MemberPfui! Just use Linux on POWER8 chips. You know it makes sense!
Or I suppose we could migrate everything back to the mainframe.
I guess this finally puts the kybosh on running Windows Server 2016 on a dl980 then …. 😛
AdamWFree MemberGloom is great but you have to spin a good story. I do like it but it becomes X-rated when I play.
My mate from back home over down by there (Llangollen area) pops over frequently and we go to a great game cafe called Ludorati in Nottingham where they have a wall full of games to play and discounted purchases. I got my mate “King Domino” for Christmas which won ‘Spiel der Jahre’ 2017.
We played Elder Signs last time – it is better on the iPad; far too much to keep in your head for each turn.
BTW have we reached ‘peak Cthulu’ yet? It’s everywhere!
AdamWFree MemberStrongly against. Chasing and killing something “for fun” is inhumane. There’s nothing wrong with going out on horseback for a nice canter around the country but to find joy in ripping apart another creature “just because” is sick.
AdamWFree MemberDid my back in a few years ago and it was agony, screaming when moving about. Doctor gave me tramadol and told me to keep moving. I did some research on exercises and did them, only taking the tramadol fora week as it’s strong stuff and I didn’t want it to be habit-forming.
What most people above say – physio and keep moving!
AdamWFree MemberThe Complete Calvin and Hobbes collection.
Some calligraphy stuff.
Some fabric to play with. And a picture drawn by my 21yo artist niece of Geralt of Rivia.
AdamWFree MemberI am 50 years old and have never, not once, had any religious people telling me what I should be thinking or learning. Are you saying atheists have and that has what made them so intolerant ?
51 year old here, and hell yes I have been told what I should be thinking or learning.
I can still remember the effing apostles creed from when I was a kid. I’ve lost “friends” after coming out because it was “against god” and the stigma from the crap taught to me while I was younger did not help one iota. We have men in frocks in the house of lords choosing our laws and I can think of at least four churches (one or two bizarre, what is the Spritualists all about?) with messages about turning to god within walking distance.
Happy to see you managed to get away though.
AdamWFree MemberMark get yerself a couple of Exadatas. I look after a number of them and they’re
the dog’s dangliesa royal pain in the bum to manage.AdamWFree MemberWe never had corned beef hash as kids, we used to have corned beef *mash* which was basically corned beef mashed up in potato. Usually served with baked beans.
I think it was a way to make a tin stretch for a family of six.
We were reet poor, lick road clean w’tongue etc. etc.
AdamWFree MemberI used to be R4 all day but now I avoid first thing – the ‘Today’ programme is just chattering classes talking rubbish and/or false equivalence in the effort to start a fight (e.g. Lawson talking out of his bum about climate change). Oh and Any Questions?/Any Answers? as it give me the view that humanity is lost. 🙂
ClassicFM is OK but they seem to have a limited repertoire.
Absolute 80s is decent.
AdamWFree MemberLike the sound of that Bluebell Wood one @c_g. I’m into the city on Sunday, I’ll take a peek for one. 😀
AdamWFree MemberI’m currently reading The Guide to the Good Life: the Ancient Art of Stoic Joy which was recommended by Derren Brown in his book ‘Happy’.
I find it useful, especially things like that it is your reaction to something which gives you grief, not the thing itself.
