Turner Flux which replaced an aluminium Revolver (not as nice as the titanium one above though!).
PS my revolver didn’t snap despite seven years of riding in the lakes – although it does look a bit rough now :-)

I just used the normal Stan’s kit with one layer of yellow tape on my 717’s. Tyres are standard High Rollers (i.e. not tubeless ready).
Weight of this set up is within 20g of what it was before. The advantage of a tubeless set up is fewer punctures and lower pressures not weight saving in my experience (maybe I put too much solution in… :-) )

Bontrager Race OR and Ellsworth Flight – I haven’t seen many of either about but I don’t know whether that means that they’re rare or just old…

Like APF, I’ve always used spinnaker repair tape – loads on ebay if you can’t get to a chandlers.

I’m 6 ft and I ride a 56cm with about 18cm of seatpost exposed. Had a test ride on a 58cm and it didn’t ‘feel right’. Having said that I tend to prefer smaller frames…

    +1 for shotsaway

Balance bike worked brilliantly for my son – my daughter is now learning the the same way. Will it work for your kids? Who knows!

If it doesn’t though – just get a bike with stabilisers.

People learn things in different ways – well apart from the ‘one true way – in my day we didn’t do it like that so it can’t possibly work’ zealots on STW of course…

Mechanically 100% however not at all fussed about scuffs/scrapes etc – sort of the bike equivalent of a rat rod…

Steel toe capped boots (made by a company called Himalaya who were presumably the cheapest supplier my company could find… Surprisingly comfy once you’ve worn them in though!).

I use one of these – nice and small – works well – battery seems to last forever.

Suntour XC Pro front thumbshifter – in use since ’96 and still works fine (now on a Turner Flux).

Admittedly thumbies are quite simple robust things so this may not be particularly impressive…

I have a Paddy Wagon for riding to work (through bike to work scheme years ago). Rode it fixed for a couple of commutes and realised that it wasn’t for me… Good news is that you just need to flip the rear hub and you’ve got a singlespeed!
Ok depending on what you buy, you might conceivably have to purchase a screw on freehub… The point I’m trying to make is if you buy a fixed and don’t like it you can easily turn it into a singlespeed (assuming you don’t buy a true track frame with no way of mounting a rear brake of course!)

Juan – whilst I appreciate that you get a warm and fuzzy feeling from self-rightousness, I’m with Al on this one. I’m really glad that you get great service from your local shop but not everyone needs advice from the lbs (in fact the closest one to me only seems to offer advice that is just plain wrong).

In my experience shops such as Merlin offer an excellent service so I am very happy to support them… In your world does that mean I only know the price of everything and the value of nothing?

    This might be of interest…

    http://www.speedcameras.org/speed_cameras_guidelines.htm

Selective reading would justify either side of the argument however it does confirm the number of fatalities as just one of several potential criteria.

PS the site supports removal of certain cameras so don’t click on the link if this is likely to make you foam at the mouth :-)

Probably not that helpful but my Strokers (gram front and carbon rear but with Ashima rotors) are the quietest disc brakes I’ve ever used! No squeal and way easier to keep set up than my Hopes. The Hopes look nicer though…
My advice would be to stick with them for a couple more rides – with a bit of luck they’ll quieten down.

Hmmm – from a slightly different perspective – when I was building my house, the local farmer tried to screw me over to the tune of £2.5k to dig up 18 inches of ground to route the electric supply.
The power company actively encouraged and supported taking a different route!
Also how well do you get on with your ’20 or so’ neighbours? If you all get on well, the hassle for a couple of days won’t be an issue (certainly 13 out of 14 of my neighbours were fine about digging up a shared drive to route the cable instead) – so if you’re concerned about future resale problems just explain to them your reasons :)

I found a new drawback to cars with auto’s today – when they break down the AA can only tow at a maximum of 10mph… Apologies to anyone on the A595 this afternoon :-)
That’ll teach me to brag on a forum about how good old Volvos are!

    AD

I know it isn’t quite the same but my 940 with an auto box gives about 20mpg local running…
Auto Volvos are not the most fuel efficient choice in my experience :-)
Having said that they are great for putting bikes and stuff in and pretty cheap to buy in the first place (my 940 cost £500 six years ago).

’96 Bontrager Race – now built up as a singlespeed with short travel RC39’s on it. Absolutely brilliant bike. Probably considered a ‘bit twitchy’ by todays standards though…

I bought the Fives at list price at the time (from memory ~£80) and the local optician fitted lenses for ~£40. Admittedly this was about 3 years ago.
Same optician (Bruce Avery in Cockermouth) also sold me the Adidas glasses and lenses so in fairness he might have been cutting me a bit of a deal for the repeat custom.
Again at the time I think the equivalent set up from an official Oakley dealer was around £200 – though of course I don’t have the ‘special’ Oakley optics…

Adidas ones are ok – I use mine with clear lenses for night riding or yellow lenses for grey days. They don’t look that great though… Depends how vain you are :-)
I have a set of Oakley Fives with prescription lenses for sunny days. My local optician fitted the lenses to these which was considerably cheaper than going direct to Oakley.

More headline grabbing BS from Gove. If this actually happens it’ll just encourage people to lie and the ‘illness’ stats will go through the roof…

Another vote for the Topeak Mini 18 – chain tool is a little bit fiddly but works fine.
