Last year we hired full face helmets from Intersports just by the Super Morzine lifts.

They were basic but seemed decent – certainly didn’t appear to have any crash marks or smell horrible!

Not expensive at all, much less than a full face to buy,  I think you can hire online too.

Doesn’t sound great, thanks for the advice. Will take the paint off and see how horrific it is 🙁

I have one of these – it fufills the needs – big, remote – but is cheap and no doubt will fail at some point

Current build has Mavic Aksyium wheels, Panaracer 32 ribmo tyres, Tiagra / Deore groupset, SLR Superflow saddle, seatpost from the sparesbox, big old rack, lights etc. etc..

I’d like it to be about 20lb – I have a rim brake road bike for speed & sunshine

njee, just read that wheel thread – sounds interesting – I guess you can build a wheel? I’ve rebuilt wheels with new rims but never done it from scratch. I suppose if I had all the bits my LBS would stick it all together!

    thanks folks

what about handlebars? It’s got basic alloy jobs at the moment – any recommendations for light bars?

In term of groupset, i’d heard that SRAM was light – Rival?

If you have Netflix The Bright is pretty good. Will Smith does a decent turn without his usual quips

I’ve got an ’05 2.0 wrx wagon & I had a Legacy Spec B (’97) for a while and they are very different cars,

The Impreza is rapid on back roads, but a bit painful on the motorway. I don’t tend to use it for that, much more fun on the B road!

Bought mine for about 6k from a trader in Rotherham, https://www.jctcars.co.uk

Tempted to get it mapped though!

    I’ve used:

Bontrager AW3 28 – good, fast, probably not suitable for offroad though as no tread

Vittoria Hyper 37s – super quick, light for the size, punctured a bit & wore out after 2k as above – very smooth ride

Gatorskins – super slippery in the wet, not great, consigned to my spare tyre set

Specialized Armadillo 25s – a bit better than Gatorskins but still not brilliant

Panaracer RIBMO 32 – current tyre, quite heavy feeling but reasonably fast and can do offroad a bit

I’d love to go tubeless but my rims wouldn’t support it (mavic aksium)

Looks like an amazing and quite scary event, I think a riding mate is doing it.

When you say £600 is that for the bike or the bike and bike packing kit & lights?

I reckon a second hand Genesis arkose has to be in with a shout, disc brakes would be essential for me if you’re riding on rough roads in the dark, it has full mounts for rack/mudguards and is simple to find.

This is a big one with hydro brakes under £600

One tube, big puncture proof tyres (32c Ribmo at the moment), tubeless stuff in the tubes (not sure if this works but?) and some patches.

Will only repair if absolutely necessary!

Being stuck on a country road with a puncture in the dark and no way to get home is a bit of a disaster…

I’d love to go tubeless but not sure if my rims are up to it. (Mavic Aksium)

I’ve not used the Protect boots but i have the shoes (Trail SL) and they are great. They also look much cooler than the 5.10 IMO

I used BB7 road for ages – 8/9 years? – they are fine but they do need a fair bit of adjustment. Mainly due to the 1 pivot design

Switched to Juin-Tech last year, along with a cable upgrade (jagwire). Lovely brakes, less adjustment and constant feel. Look nice too. I did have to get one replaced when the pivot seized, but the shop did it no questions asked.

Still have the battered BB7s as spares though, they do “just work”

    so:
    spendy – juin-tech or other cable>hydro
    less spendy – bb7

Just thought I’d say, got the new shock the other day, fitted easily and works a dream. The fancy damping means you don’t need to switch it to climb or trail for pedalling but the shock opens up when you get into the rough.

Thanks – I bloody well hope it’s not the frame alignment! How could I tell? Shock shaft is unmarked and otherwise the bike works very well.

This is the shock I was looking at

The last time I was at BPW, which was the 1st time on my mtb for about 6 months I had 2 crashes, first was due to my mate having a panic brake going into a drop and me crashing into him, the second was the classic – last bus, hammering the blue after Hot Stepper and then having a big off over the bars and straight into the ground. I was so pleased I had a full face on as it (and my casio g-shock – an smart watch would not have done the job ) too the full impact. My knee pads and my sternum, which broke – I think, took the rest of the stop.

I honestly thought something serious was broken – probably time to take on board the “stop if you’re tired” messages next time!

    A broken Sternum is painful!

I have those on my commuter, do the job and I find are easy to use for clips. Not so great for flat use but will work.

Hi, for my commuter/family bike I have some Shimano A530 pedals – they are like road pedals when you have your cleats on and no good for any offroad when you need flat pedals but are otherwise good for what they offer.

how are they on the road? do they have that cx “wobble” round corners?

I agree that it’s Froome’s to lose – so predictions on the other podium places?

Quintana second and Martin or Yates third? Any race of truth specialists within 1:30 of the top three?

I’ve had SS bikes in the past, and for commuting in the city they were excellent. A fixed appeals as a new thing to try for reasonable distance rides in the country.

Cheers, it would need to be a drop bar road bike, with space for full mudguards and a bit of panache too!

Would any fixed frame work if I wanted a front brake only?

I guess I was hoping that if we were going to get smart meters from the utility then we may have some sort of data standard…

That sounds possible, would the customer hold the accounts or would it be via an intermediary?

On the cheaper side I’ve found a Charge Knife to be a decent saddle very much in the Flite style. I’ve not got on with saddles with dips in the middle before. Not exceptionally light (220g) but far nicer for me compared to the Antares (170g ish) that I had previously.
