had a similar problem..and learned the following..
double or tripple mechs are for different chainlines..
    46,8mm..48,8mm or 50mm
there are two different standards for the direct mounts ..
155,5mm and 159,5mm (center of the direct mount screw to center of BB)
and, there are many different XT direct mount front mechs which look all the same but they are all different..
most important for 38T to 40T and 40T to 44T..
finally exact this one solved the problem for me..
shimano direct mount front mech FDM 781-10-D6

with 6`1″..I had an 19″ heckler and have an 18″ five since 5 years now..
different size but both are spot on for me..
prefer the angles of the five
and wouldn`t want it any bigger…

for me its the TT length/reach..
last oktober I rebuild my trusty old stiffee (frame!)as winter hack bike..
couldn`t believe how much fun it is..
it easily pops up on the rear wheel…quite different to the BFe..
technique is the same of course..

run mine with old pikes 140mm…perfect for me,
used to run old marz z1 150mm before,
but for general use I prefer pikes

    so true…
they even sell a 1 1/4 headset until today..
an old (yeti) standard from the early 90ies

I don`t care about the wheelsize..and will stick with 26 for the next time anyway..
but an 1 1/8 argyle fork is now more expensive than a new pike !
so as said before..I`d be careful with 1 1/8 frames..

    always…
not much eating but enjoying the view..contemplating and calm down a bit to focus on the descend ..which is preferentially steep, rocky, technical stuff..
and if it is my birthday ..then even with candlelight.. :-)

roverpig hits the nail for me..

I´m gone through so many new standards..starting with the revolutionary 1 1/4 headset standard 1989 (yeti)…which vanished a couple of years later…
    until the “revolutionary” 27.5″ today..
nearly every standard has changed through the years..mostly in a way that you can`t use your old bits anymore..(forks ! 1 1/8 argyles are more expensive than pikes now !!)
money makes the world go round..
but..I´m riding 26inch HT and fullsus and a 29inch HT..
horses for courses..really like both sizes..
and I had a 27,5 HT frame, which I just sold to a mate..
it was not that bad..but also not that good…it was not as good as my 26″ and not as good as my 29″ ..something in between, being closer to the 26″..so for me just no reason to change,
the only thing which is quite good ..: 27,5 innertubes!!..I guess they fit in 26″ and 29″, so I don`t need different spare tubes in my old and trusty camelbak…. :-)

as chain breaker I really recommend the park tool CT-6.2..
small and very reliable, not the cheapest but its the only one I have,
together with a few sram powerlinks it was two times very helpful on my alptrips last year..

had the previous version…but managed to destroy the zip-band function while repairing my mech at a nightride last winter..
so returned back to a tikka+2 as emergency light….quite expensive and bulky…but bright and reliable..should be fine for the next years..
