You need to zoom in on open street map to see all the detail. As you zoom out it hides things. The good thing is you can add to open street map yourself so if there is a bridleway missing you can fix it. The downside is Andy someone? exports the maps every 3 months so it might take a while for your edit to get to your gps.

You can’t load memory map maps onto your gps so it isn’t the same thing. memory map is good for plotting routes at home but once you are out in the wild it doesn’t give you any detail just the line you are following.

Given the price I don’t think its fair to grumble about the detail. I don’t see how anyone can justify the £100 Garmin topo mapping when this is comparable.

Cannock is not very detailed. I checked on the GPS and its the same.

Good quality video but the panning shots seem to be experiencing some frame rate conversion which means every few frames it jumps and doesn’t pan smoothly. You just need to figure out how to get rid of the jumping in your jumping video. Otherwise really good.

Please don’t explain what you did with your Cove bike in this thread.

I have had the short seatpost problem and fitting a longer one didn’t make the bike feel right so for me its up

“Flash Gordon” because I had a flashing light on whilst commuting. He was drunk and setting off fireworks in other peoples gardens so I didn’t stop for a chat.

Read this thread and then decide if you would like to risk your job to get something that isn’t a grown up persons bike for upto £1000 that you could ride to work on.

Could be a bit of stiction in the new seals. If it started after you washed the bike perhaps you washed the oil off and they are sticking a bit. My Marzocchi mx comp do it when they are dry. A smear of fork oil on the stanchions shuts them up.

What model etrex is it? and what software are you plotting the route with?

In Memory Map under Gps – Gps setup there is an option for the number of way points per route. If this is set to a low figure it will truncate your route even if your garmin supports more.

You could save the need for a long extension lead by using a petrol powered generator. Another idea would be to use a petrol powered motor to drive the rear wheel directly. I believe there is a company called Yamaha who specialise in making these contraptions. Perhaps you could give them a try?

    SRAM
    830 standard
850 chrome hardened (not chrome plated)
    870 chrome hardened (chrome plated)
890 even more bling than the 870

I read an article that was talking about the previous models (PC38 PC48 etc.). To translate this to the current models 830 will wear out quick the 850 will last as well as the 870 and 890 but doesn’t look as good.

I guess it’s a similar situation with other brands and 9spd chains. the cheapest will be worse alloys and heat treatment. The next step up will be more durable but then its diminishing returns as you pay for the cosmetic differences.

This is the funniest thread I’ve read for ages. I hope you don’t get into bother over what might have seemed like a good idea at the time.

I also hope that your directors aren’t too busy posting on bike forums in the middle of the working day to realise that the company gains from the national insurance payment as well as the employee. The employer will still gain money whatever you spend the voucher on. Still, if it massages your own ego to talk like a ruthless business tycoon on a bike forum then more power to your typing fingers. However your comments might be better received on a ruthless business tycoon forum.

The only person who stands to loose from abuse of the scheme is the tax man and as with all these schemes it will get binned as soon as any misuse is identified. Stabilisers? there’s always someone who spoils it for everyone else.

On a practical note I don,t think the scheme really scales to lower cost (kids?) bikes because the payment that you make at the end of the term to make the bike yours will nearly negate the tax savings.

I had a similar problem I had magura julies on a marin and they worked fine. moved them over to a GT i-drive and the back brake only made the worst howling noise. I tried all the old wives remedies and nothing worked. swapped the pads for another brand swapped the wheel and rotor finally fitted a shimano SLX calliper and it shut up. I think the resonance of the frame and Julie calliper were just a bad match.

The cheapest models don’t do mapping. For the cheapest models you need to look at the number of waypoints per route and the number of routes it can store. If you are looking to spend more then you need to look at mapping ability and map storage memory.
If you are looking at Garmin
H=high sensitivity receiver (for the woods and valleys)
C= colour display (better than the black & white and lower power consumption)
x= micro SD memory card slot
if you get one with a micro USB connector the cables are generic and you can power it from a car adaptor/micro USB mobile charger.
And budget for a handlebar mount.

Summary – get a Legend HCx + handlebar adaptor

If you want to record cadence and heart rate look at the Garmin edge models.

It was an 18″ I’ve just had a look on the sizing guide on wiggle and 18″ should be good for 5’10” to 6’1/2″ and the 19″ for 6″ to 6’2 1/2″ so I should be at the upper end of the 18″ not the 19″. But it definitely felt a bit small. Oh and this years Dawg is £1,712

I thought this thread was dead. I’ve been out of town for a couple of days and when I get back I find all this lot. I think the medium bikes are a bit too small. I have a large 19″ Specialized Hardrock and it feels just right. The mediums I have had in the past feel a bit cramped. I’ve been to a couple of Halfords and can’t find either a Boardman or a GT but the ride 2 work scheme is starting again and I can only buy a bike from a designated LBS if I want it tax free. Not Halfords this time. Sherwood pines also has a kona dawg for under £1000 but its a medium and it just doesn’t feel big enough. If I spend over £1000 I am perhaps as well off looking for discount rather than bothering with tax free.

Does anyone know what the reliability of the pivots/bushings is like on the specialized these days? I gather they only have a 1 year warranty.

    Thanks for the advice.

It seems strange to me that every second bike that I see is a specialized but their owners are less forthcoming with praise or criticism for them than the lesser known brands.

I do consider 1k to be cheap because the last 2 FS bikes I have had were proper cheap and needed almost everything replacing so in the long run I have spent the 1K ish and don’t have a very good bike to show for it. This time I want to get a bike which I will not need to spend any money on. Total cost of ownership puts me off bikes with lots of weak pivots so that puts a tick in the box for the prophet I think.

I have noted the thumbs up for the prophet but I read a fairly poor review on the rush and the geometry is one thing I really want to get right. (a tick in the box for the specialized?)

I was looking at the Trek fuel ex 7 but it doesn’t get quite such glowing reports at the others and the price at £1,550 is at the upper end of the scale.

The boardman fs comp at £799 is looking like a bit of a bargain

I don’t think any are 100mm. this years FRS xc are 120. The pitch comp is available but you’re probably right about the pitch pro being sold out so I can cross that one off the list.

I’m looking for something which has enough travel to compensate for my lack of skill (crash over obstacles) but something that is light enough to pedal. I want one bike which can do anything not something which is either super light and fragile or has too much of a heavy downhill bias.

What would you suggest for the type of places I will be riding? The lightweight end of the scale or the bruiser end.

Isn’t the P7 made by souel ssc rather than cree?

I think the crees are about 230 lumen so your 900 lumen P7 must be really good. What do you think about it? what batteries / run time do you get? do I need to upgrade from cree?

You could place a larger tyre on the front of the bike but it would irreversibly upset its Feng shui. The Qi which is the movable positive or negative life force which plays an essential role will be reversed. The internal or physical energy of qi as it relates to feng shui would include the orientation of a structure, its age, and its interaction with the surrounding environment including the local micro climates, the slope of the land, vegetation, and soil quality.

The five elements of feng shui (water, wood, fire, earth/soil, metal not forgetting rubber) are made of yin and yang in precise amounts (Greater wood has less yin than lesser wood, but not as much yin as water, and so forth). Earth is a buffer, or an equilibrium achieved when the polarities cancel each other.

If you ride a motorbike its the other way round.

No problem. Simply buy one of these for when you are speeding or being pursued by a cruise missile. Or both.

If a Li-ion runs completely flat it will not recharge. If you force it to recharge it may explode. The shelf life is determined by level of charge and temperature. More charge + high temp = shorter life. The self discharge of a lion is less than ni-mh but if you store it with too little charge it may fall below the point where it will charge back up again so its a compromise between not enough charge = dead battery or too much charge = shorter life.

you can read about it here if you have some matchsticks to prop your eyes open with.

That was a smashing day out. Thanks to Pook for organising and Gravy for being the tour guide.

In case some of you weren’t paying attention and would like to be reminded where you have been I have uploaded the route to my website
    http://www.sherwoodpines.synthasite.com
Its at the bottom of the routes page.

I would also urge you to join the forum at the bottom of the home page so that you can organise rides and have a grumble about them drainage gutters without them getting lost in the all the other singletrack world discussions.

On my way out of the car park I saw thefallguy starting another loop of the kitchener trail. some people just don’t know when to stop.

I think I’ve got a pass out so I’ll be there but it has rained and it may rain again on Thursday. It will give you a chance to explain how everything is perfect Gravy.

Its not that I dislike the pines, it was superb last summer.
