Good luck with the Newforce lot, I’ve found them difficult to contact, hard to engage and basically up their own ar*e when it comes to sharing info on rides etc.

Alternatively, I’ve found them easy to contact, friendly whilst being pretty relaxed about routes and distances. Why worry?

Throw your leg over your bike, switch your lights on and ride. Take the p1ss out of (me usually) people that fall off. Drink beer. Wobble home tired but chilled. Spot on!

Using a Royce 68mm bb here in a 73mm shell with a 113mm axle here on my 69er with a Uno crankset. Great chainline and no close tolerance issues…

Can do a pic if you wish.

My CS400 is on the limit of range on the bars on my (huge) road bike. I just don’t think it’s the strongest link. Poor show Polar, I say.

IME get the head unit as close to the sensor as possible.

Stan’s Arch here, seem very strong. I bent a couple of Sun EQ’s, admittedly through poor riding but they seemed to be made of cheese. No problems with the ZTR’s and they do seal well, but you do need tape.

Arch wheel’s spoke tension is normal, no probs. They seem bullet proof, I’m 105kg.

gears here and dont think i’ll ever try SS

I’m in the dont get it camp – yes, you are. The following confirms it!

Road – why would you want to!! I’ve ridden with some and they get to about 30mph and its all over for them. Whats the point in that?. As for climbing, well how about if i match your 42:14 gear or whatever you ride using my gears but wait, as the hill starts flattening out i’ll just pop it down a few and see ya

mtb – again limits what you can do and achieve. I dont think anyone could be faster round a course on a ss than a geared bike. Thats why all pro’s ride gears

You’ve proved yourself right – singlespeed is not for you, and you don’t get it!

So….. me personally, gears are quicker by a long shot and those who ride ‘faster’ than there mates who have gears obviously have slow mates.
If its your thing then good, stick with and ride how you want to but if it came down to whats quicker, then gears is the answer

I ride fixed to work (daily 40 mile round trip). It’s hilly one end, it’s not a problem though, and the fixie requires virtually no maintenance. Just new tyres when they wear out.

Singlespeed off road for the same reason really. It makes for more fun, more of a challenge. Going to try brakeless fixed off road for the same reasons.

If I were going racing I’d be with you and get the geared bike out though, or if i was going somewhere with actual mountains. Saying that I have done 100k races in Wales s/s but it was fairly hard…

Don’t like rear guards but they do save your shorts/saddles.

Currently running old style (2nd gen.) Crud front and rear.

I’ve removed a welded pair by hand before. It takes a while  but looks tidy.

As I thought, no metallugists on STW tonight…. :D

At least freeagent makes some sense though, thankyou.

Biscuits? Really? I reckon you just dry them out a bit more baking the second time. I’d be willing to bet this isn’t a factor when heating a steel frame to temperatures required to bake paint 8O .

Looks like they’re welded, in which case you’ll have to cut them off. Be very careful not to damage the tubes…

If they were brazed you could get them off with heat alone. Much friendlier

32:16 (small wheel on the back). You don’t change gear!

I think you’re worrying about being in the ‘right’ gear, the point of s/s is you’re in the wrong gear most of the time.

What you need is a singlespeed….

    I’ve just bought about 5 tons, which looks like quite a lot. It’s supposed to be 2 chords, a chord being 4′ x 4′ x 8′.

Sorry, don’t do new fangled measurements….

And wot mefty said, apparently logburners were designed to burn soft wood, but you may have fireworks in an open fire.

As for storage, I kept the rounds on a pallets pre-woodstore. Poly sheet will stop them getting soaked.

Robin isn’t taking orders and hasn’t been for a while. And his frames are £1500 too….

I’d still like one though  .

I had a lovely road frame built by Roberts, a fantastic bike that has done many hundreds of miles in the Alpes. Years of experience are evident in the way this bike fits and rides. It’s awesome.

But I would not however buy an MTB from them. I don’t think they really ‘get’ MTB’s, and worse still they thing they know best! Several friends have had some disappointing experiences with them. Road, track, touring and maybe ‘cross bikes yes, anything else – NO!

Robin Mather is the way to go, but a) you don’t have long enough and b) you probably can’t afford it!

Yes, I sell my bike stuff on here, regularly. And I donate

I just think people selling non bike stuff and posting the same ad 7 times in a couple of days is not relevant.

No probs with getting my ads bumped down the page, I like to view a front page with bike related items on a bike related website.

Anyhoo, the sun’s out, I’m going riding all day *waves back* :D

Ours has done this a couyple of times, was advised it may have been triggered by stress.
It has had a serious fight or two with next doors cat, I suspect this preceeded the ‘events’
The solution laid in said next door neighbour running over her own cat, job done! No more problems since. RIP Bella 8O

You did ask on a public forum, ffs. If you want to borrow the book sometime I’d be more than happy to lend it to you…if you’re still alive :D

If you cross the spoks less you have to tension them more to try and achieve the same stiffness. So you get greater loads on you flanges (great word) and because the effect of interweaving the spokes is lost , so is torsional stiffness.

For hack bike it wont matter much, and it will look shite. I wouldn’t use it for sprint training either

    spokes don’t cost £30..

    Well, near e-bloody-nuff they do!

Sides, I need 284mm spokes to make a 3-cross wheel, and that’s not a popular size I don’t think. Usually only 260-ish and 290-ish lengths for standard ATB and road wheels. I have the required number of 262mm spokes for the 1-cross pattern, you see.

Can’t really find out much about strength with a 1-cross pattern, just that the wheel will be a bit stiffer, but not by all that much.

    Incorrect. Read the book!

First thing I’d do is use a different bike shop….

Yes is doable, no you won’t die. However, the wheel will not have very good lateral stiffness.

There’s a reason 3 cross is used on most builds. Try ‘The Bicycle Wheel’ by Jobst Brandt, he’s very good at explaining this stuff.

Nice tidy build, very neat. Just a couple of thoughts:

    1) Your conservatory roof needs cleaning
    2) The hoses/cables look a little long….
    3) The rear hose has an unecessary bend in it
    4) The wheels are a little small (at least the front one  )
    5) If your ‘mate’ trained a bit more they could ditch all that gubbins and have a very clean singlespeed!

On a more serious note, what’s the weight distribution like?
