@ bonesetter, about once every 10 years!

In reality this b/b has been used loads and transferred from bike to bike. I don’t ever jetwash my bike. Also I don’t jump so the Ti axle is fine for me. I’ve never really see the need for ISIS or X type bb’s.

Shimano’s UN72 was legendary. Incredible value and performance. The Royce is just a lighter, better engineered, better qualtiy and serviceable version.

You should see what they did to my best SIDI’s!

Our cat peels them from the neck down. Good job too.

Second XT external BB in 12 months, so looking for something better

    Square taper obviously.
    UN74 and Middleburn RS8s.

Close but no cigar. ROYCE and Middleburn RS8 square taper. TEN years with no bearing change!

For what the OP asked, Defender evey time. I bought one off this very forum about 10 years ago, it’s been brilliant.

Paragon 29er here and I rate it. But then everyone who’s got one will, it’s human nature!

It suits me to be long in the top tube and I like the geometry for racing. Good bike, that Gary Fisher knows a thing or two.

Core strength at your age. I’m old, I should know

Also try yoga, great for your core and as important, flexibilty.

For general off road use get a 32t front, and a few spare cogs for the back, but start with 16. I would avoid 1/8th unless you regulalry snap chains with your enormous strength! (Only applicable for those who are called Sir Chris Hoy)

I would avoid 1/8th setup as I and others have had problems with chains jumping off at the rear.

3/32 is fine, I’ve used it racing on a s/s, I don’t get off and generate a fair amount of force climbing (I’m 16st). I also use SRAM powerlinks so I can break the chain easily for maintenace.

Middleburn-wise I’d go for an Uno set up, otherwise I’d use a Surly 3/32 stainless ring on standard cranks.

I quite liked my lockout Reba’s, though they were nice forks.

The I got some Mavericks that came with a bike and I’m amazed. Loads of travel, light and stiff. Very[/i] highly recommended.

How refreshing to have an interesting post about bikes!

Good job OP, nice looking steed. Not for me though, I’m going fixed. And probably beardy.

Get what I’ve got ‘cos it’s better than everyone else’s dog….

Better still pop down the Blue Cross, get a good old fashioned mongrel (you could call it a dalminger of jackorkie to impress someone) and just enjoy it.

I wouldn’t run any breed of dog too far with the bike, this can be quite hard for them. If you must s/s is much more dog friendly than geared IMHO.

But they are better suited to being a running partner because
    a) they generally find it easier than you and ..
    b) You will probably get worn out before they do.

    Dogs are great, get one!

Don’t I get a sticker or merit or something for getting your height correct? That bike is too clean…

Any way lose the mudguards, lose the spoke protector, get your front hose corrected to right length, ditch the gears and get it muddy and scratched up a bit and you’ll be fine…

And that ^^^^^ was with slidey dropouts, no tensioner.

I can see it’s a 3/32 chain, but beware overly skinny sprockets, I’ve had probs in the past with a thin trials one.

Also had trouble with a large s/s 29er set up, I thought initially as a result of a big bendy steel frame. Was running 1/8 Middleburn Uno & Surly set up and when going full beans it would (sometmes) jump.

This twisted my melon for a while as I could see reason for the problems, but on the advice of Singlespeedstu I changed to a 3/32 Uno ring, Sram chain and Surly 3/32 = no problems at all. Bizarre but true.

The tension is only in the top of the chain. The bottom is just feeding onto the sprocket. Banging around on a srung tensioner may accentuate the problem but yours is a chainwrap issue. Your set up does look cack, it would probably be cured by a Gusset style fixed tensioner and a proper length chain.

The skinny sprocket probably isn’t helping. Ideally you want nothing to move. I’d recommend 3/32 chain, 3/32 Surly sprockets. 1/8th is overkill and does have its own issues.

    Innovation isn’t necessarily improvement:

I had to replace the bearings on one of these after 10 years regular off road riding as one side had got a little rough!

+1 for Middleburn square taper and Royce bb combo.

Sharpen your chain. You can tell if it’s ok by the nice chippings coming off when cutting. Check oil feed by blipping the throttle and pointing the bar nose at a clean surface. Oil droplets should just be visible.
