Grab an old skool Clockwork frame and modernise it

That’s what I did with my ’98/’99 Anniversary Clockwork

RS Reba’s @80mm, X9, Mavic Crossland wheelset, modern chainset, ok it’s still on V brakes, but there’s more than enough power for my riding

If you really need discs you could have then added onto the frame I guess & use a modern fork with disc mounts

Any excuse to show a pic of My Clockwork…

Ton I also have no idea why they said no rear mech, all the electric bikes we sell have a rear mech: Claud Butler Glide, A2B, Cube EPO

I assume the frame has a suitable drop out for a rear mech?

Might be the motor causing the sluggish feeling, some electric bikes can feel draggy when pedalled unassisted

I’ve not noticed any real drag with a non electric bike with an Alfine hub, but I’ve only had short test rides on them

Almost everything* on my KHS Montana Pro is from 1993/4 and still working

It gets regular outings and has racked up plenty of miles with just a bit of grease/oil here & there every so often to keep it running smooth

*chainrings, chain, cassette, brake pads, tyres and tubes are not from ’93/4 ;)

One of the lads over at retrobike carries his bike around on a scooter IIRC, might be a motorbike, not 100% sure, but it is one or the other!

Can’t remember exactly how he does it though

5 bikes worth around £6k at RRP/estimated 2nd hand prices only costs me an extra £7 per month on my house insurance

I’d be looking at getting a better deal from another insurer

And now for something completely different…

What sort of mileage are you doing a year?

If it’s a lot of miles a diesel might be a better option than a petrol

Your warranty lies with the retailer, not Madison.

An initial inspection doesn’t always reveal the full extent of the damage

Until the mechanic actually starts to work on the bike/part the mechanic may not know the full extent of the damage to the bike/part, so it may well be that the wheel if FUBAR’d

As they are letting you see the wheel and the damage then the chances are that is is knackered, if they just said ‘yeah it’s dead & you need a new wheel’ without you seeing the old one they could be trying it on

Wait and see what they tell you and what you see when you go in to see them

    Formula R1

Excellent power, good modulation, lightweight & can be upgraded to make them lighter than the Hope X2 race brakes

Out of all the brakes I’ve used* they are the best brakes I’ve ever used

*Hope Mono Mini, Hope mini, Avid Juicy 3, Avid Juicy 5, Hayes Nines, Hayes Stroker Trail, Shimano Deore, Shimano XT

I must have caught Vision Express on a good day then, they said they’d happily replace the lenses in my frames, can’t remember the price they quoted me so it can’t have been that bad

I have a 1.9Tdi 130bhp Ibiza, love it… decent enough fuel economy & goes like a bat out of hell

I generally return ~40mpg with bikes on the roof on a motorway run

I have had an average 59mpg out of it on a 16 mile run down an A road, barely tickling the throttle and brakes

I reckon the 100bhp will be good if you like to drive with enthusiasm, the 1.4 will be ok but not much more than that I suspect

The 1.4 should cruise well once up to speed but overtaking might take a while

I could get my ’95 Marin Team Ti to shed a bit of weight, but at 21.75lbs I think it’s light enough for me.

There are some silly money weight weenie bikes out there, the lightest I’ve ridden was a 19lb old school Ritchey P20. It was too light for me as it was too flexy, but damn it flew along once you stuck the power down, quite twitchy too which led to a couple of hairy moments

Coleman, we cannot supply another bike as Cube do not have stock of them, that one was the last one in the European Distribution centre in that colour and size, we have offered a full refund instead.

    That is true SBZ

I’m a long time lurker on this forum and have seen the way some companies/employee’s have handled themselves on this forum, I don’t intend to follow the Fruit based Octopus way of posting.

I do not intend to get into a slagging match with anyone.

All I am trying to do is provide the information from my point of view, the facts as I know them to provide a little balance to this thread

I can only give the information that I have, I am not a liar nor am I a manager or a boss, I am an employee

If Phil rang you then he didn’t relay your number onto other the other staff dealing with your problem, a simple mistake that we will ensure doesn’t happen again

I believe Phil told you that you may want to consider what you had posted on the internet as it may be slanderous as it is inaccurate, as far as I know no ‘threats’ were made. If he asked for an apology for your slanderous material I believe he had every right to ask for a simple apology

Any business will protect it’s interests and ensure that slanderous material is not posted in the public domain.

All of this could have been avoided with a polite phone call, not as Phil called your earlier response to our call trying to sort out your problem ‘a foul mouthed tirade of abuse where every other word was a swear word’

We like to give our customers good service, but you did not even give us a chance to rectify the problem as per the sales of goods act

    As a balance, here’s a video of a happy JC Cook’s customer (2m40sec in)

    Synopsis..

Customer purchases bike on finance using his brother to get the finance, the form has his brothers phone number on it, not the customers

Bike is despatched to his brothers house (to help prevent fraud), but upon arrival has small areas of damage to the paint

Customer contacts shop who offer either A) a Cube jersey as compensation or B) collect the bike and replace it with the last one Cube’s main European distribution centre has in stock

Shop attempts to contact customer’s brother (as it’s the only contact number we had at that time) to tell them that the bike is about to be despatched, no reply so answer phone message is left. Brother has no credit to retrieve answer phone message

Bike returns to the shop with both brakes not working correctly. All bikes have their brakes and gears checked before dispatch.

The seatpost saddle and pedals are not in the original packaging the original bike was sent out with, they’re randomly packaged in what looks like scrap packaging

Replacement bike is despatched to the brothers house (as that’s where it has to be sent to help prevent fraud) so the customer can have it for the weekend

All hell breaks loose because the customer cannot wait until the morning to inform the shop that there is a problem in a civilised manner

Only then do we get the customers actual phone number

The shop attempts to ring the customer, who then unleashes a foul mouthed tirade of abuse down the phone to one of my colleagues

I feel for any shop who has to deal with customer like we have had to today.

We have not broken the sales of goods act as the customer is implying. We have replaced the initial faulty goods in a fair and reasonable time (the replacement bike was sent out under 24hours after receiving the faulty bike back into the shop) and have offered a full refund as the product is no longer available for us to order from Cube’s main European distribution centre

Think that pretty much covers it in a level headed manner

Yes I do work at JC Cooks & no I’m not the boss.

WTB Rocket V or Charge Spoon

The WTB is a tad comfier for me than the Charge, but both are good.

But as mentioned above they might not suit your arse

Can you try out some of your riding mates saddles to get a feel for which saddles suit you best?

How about a Cube AMS 110 Pro from your local Lincolnshire Cube dealer?

You could test my 2010 AMS 100 to get a feel for the Cube AMS 110. The 2011 AMS 110 is very similar to my AMS100 in how it rides.

My AMS 100 is perfect for the Wolds and trail centres, they’re well worth looking at for the sort of riding you’re doing

If you’d like to have a test of the Cube let me know.

Seat Ibiza diesel 130 bhp 230 lbft of torque & Toyo Proxes T1R tyres = 13k miles before they were out on the front.

Seen as I only do ~7k miles a year it’s no biggie to me

I do drive a bit quick sometimes, but no chavvy wheelspins or owt.

I assume the tyre pressures are checked regularly?

Was the Pug a petrol or diesel?

Does the Honda have more power/torque than the Pug?

Same tyres on both cars? tyre compounds can vary, you may have had harder tyres on the (less powerful?) Pug and softer tyres on the (more powerful?) Honda

    Any frame could fail

The frame itself didn’t fail, so why lose confidence in that part?

    4ndyB

Could send either, depends what they have in stock

Don’t think they’d strip a new frame down for the chainstays, they’d probably send a frame if they didn’t have a chainstay available in that colour

1st one I’ve seen, in fact I’ve never seen another Cube frame break at all

Cube are pretty good at sorting out warranty issues, we’ve had to send a couple of pairs of road bike forks back, but nothing else

I’m planning to do it in a 10 man team this time rather than the 4 man team this year

I’ve not let the other victims riders know this yet though

10 man team = more beer & more heckling, it’s win win

Cube AMS 110 is pretty racey with what feels to me to be a longish top tube, you’d probably want a 16″ frame. I’m 5’9″/31″ inside leg and ride an 18″ 2010 AMS 100 Pro R1 & it’s at the upper limit of what I like sizing wise

The Cube AMS 110 range is superb value for money, well built, ride well and look a little blingy too
