I love my Clockwork, as for how it compares to a modern steel frame I don't know as I've not ridden a modern steel frame, the Clockwork is the most modern steel frame I have.

The classic paint job might be worth a little more than the green one. I bought the green one as it's a little different.

Well worth keeping & doing up.

Does that mean my (assumed valueless) spotless 1997 Stumpjumper (fully rigid, steel, upgraded drivetrain – LX HT2, etc) might be worth something?

Yes it might be worth a few bob

Depending on condition it could be worth anywhere from £150 – £300 (with all the original bits back on it & a good clean up)

bought a '98/99 10th anniversary 17" Clockwork from eBay for £225 earlier in the year, not original spec but in good working order (forks were borked though)

current job 4 months & counting

Most time at one company 7 years 11 months, would probably still be there if they'd not shut down due to the excellent salary meaning I'd never have become a LBS spanner monkey, worse pay much better job :D

Currently testing Squirt & Juice Lubes Ceramic lube.

After ~150 miles on each bike, each has a different lube I've found that…

Squirt is ok, chain gets a little noisy after 20miles or so (chain was degreased & well lubed as per instructions)

JL Ceramic performs better than Squirt with less chain noise, but it does pick up more muck than Squirt (not as much as normal wet lubes though)

Need to put more mileage in on both bikes to fully test the lubes, but so far I'd recommend JL Ceramic even though it's (a little) more expensive than Squirt

Cube Sting? 120mm, carbon frame, good spec, 10.4kg-11.6kg allegedly.

I almost bought one, but went for a Cube AMS Pro100 instead due to a limited budget

    vdubber67 Heavy? Compared to what?

A 28lb 140mm full susser isn't exactly heavy, even measured against other 140mm F/S bikes

Anyhoo, the 5 is a great bike for looning about on. Tough, reliable & fun.

Swift, the Bicyclemania 7 challenge might be in a different format, possibly a 7 hr event for teams/pairs/solo riders doing laps rather than the full 40 miler

I did the 40 miler Bicyclemania 6 challenge last weekend, pretty good turnout for a local ride 180ish starters.

Even though it's the season for road bikes we're selling more MTB's than ever before

I think that MTB events maybe reaching saturation point for the larger ones, maybe too many big events & not enough riders with the spare cash? The local/smaller/cheaper events should probably fare better

AMS 100 Pro here, superb bike, done some marathon events on it as well as general trail & xc riding. Was thinking about getting a 125, but decided to try the 100 as a 125 was similar to my '07 Orange 5.

Anything I've done on my 5 I've been able to do on the Cube (ok I've not had much airtime on the Cube compared to the 5 but it does seem to handle it well)

Great traction on climbs, fast & fun on singletrack, pretty quick pointed downhill too. Whatever I ride on it it just feels really planted.

It's so good I might be selling my 5 8O

148 miles inc all the off road bits Whitehaven>Tynemouth (done in '05)

Been done in a day lots of times I'd imagine, has been done in ~10 hours IIRC, but that might have been the on road route.

Finish in Tynemouth, Sunderland's not a good place to end the ride.

Good things about where I work

I get to mess about with bikes all day
    It's 1/2 a mile from home
    Good banter with the staff
    Staff discount

    Bad points

The 1% of customers who are ****ts & think they know it all
    Having to repair BSO's
Chavs whose entire vocabulary consists of "this **** bike's sick mate" whilst squeezing brake levers & trying to nick the grips @ the same time, tossers.

"Not a good start to the week, a bunch of thieving ***** decided to pay the factory a visit over the weekend and steal a load of bikes/parts. In doing so they cut our phone lines which means we now have no telephones or email. We still don't know what is missing which means there may be delays on bikes being assembled and despatched. We'll let everyone know as soon as we get phone lines/internet access"

    625 on the Clockwork
    660 on the Orange 5
    700 on the Cube

Generally prefer ~660, but liking the 700's on the Cube, even though they look a bit daft

Aye you can go on & on

For me the bike I chose had the parts I usually spec my bikes with, Sram, XT & Fox (AMS Pro R1 Mag)

The Formula R1 brakes are a revelation though, I'm used to Hopes (original mono minis, '07 mono minis), Hayes HFX 9's with braided hoses & Avids (damn Juicy 3's), the Formula's simply own them all with Bombers & wee in their shoes for good measure

AMS Pro here, tis a very good bike, the Comp is pretty damn good too so I hear.

Not found a bad review of em yet.

The Reba's don't fully lock out to protect the internals of the fork, you still get ~15mm of travel, you can also adjust the floodgate which alters the bump force required to unlock the fork when you hit an obstacle, the fork unlocks then relocks.

The squelching noise is normal it's the oil passing through the damper

The Fox forks do lock out solid with no floodgate so the fork remains solidly locked out even if you hit something on the trail personally I prefer the RS lockout system even though I love Fox forks (Reba's are pretty awesome too though!)

If the folks at Leisure Lakes didn't tell you this when you asked them about it (you did ask didn't you?) then they don't know much about the bikes they are selling

I have both Reba's & Fox forks both are superb forks, the Reba's are more adjustable then the Fox.

As for Fishers service, it's a joke. Spare parts arriving 2 weeks late after the time they were promised, forks being lost then found, then lost, a week later found again & then told it's another 2 week wait for them to be serviced, our customers are not very happy bunnies due to these delays.

Both the Cubes are great bikes

Frequently wear a merino T in hot weather, doesn't feel any hotter wearing it than a man made fabric & does not stink like **** after an hour on the bike.
