    There’s a purple & pink Montana Team circa ’93-’94

Same frame as the Pro, just dripping in XTR M900 instead of XT M73x stuff

HTTP404 I’d love to put some rigid forks on there to complete the catalogue spec list, but my arthritis wouldn’t be too happy with rigid forks on the bike :( Guess the stem issue is the mahoosive length? I’m trying to source another shorter one

spock I’ll let you know how the tyres fare, doing ~25 miles round Thetford tomorrow on em, so far only been round the block with them on so far

Margin Walker I’m on the look out for a slightly shorter stem, as I do feel a little too far over the bars at the mo. How come you don’t like the tyres?

Didn’t think it’d get such a good reaction as it has, wow thanks!

I’m really pleased to how well it’s come out

The build thread is on retrobike ;)

PS there’s an epic tale of how the build came about on page 4 of the above retrobike thread

    Thanks!

I’ll be having a shakedown ride tomorrow, I think it’ll be a little interesting as I’ve not ridden a bike with a stem that long in 20 years

Spoke to one of Richie’s colleagues today @ Silverfish, very helpful indeed.

Needed 4 sets of Formula RX pads, 2 for a customer & 2 for stock in the shop. By the sounds of it there’s plenty of Formula kit in stock, which reminds me, I should have asked about the R1/Sram X9 mixmaster clamps when on the phone. Doh! Richie do you know if you have them in stock?

They are 100% OE Cube Schwalbe tyres

I see them daily as I’m working at a Cube dealer ;)

AFAIK they are the same tyres as non OE Schwalbe tyres, just branded up for Cube

Nice thought doing it for charity.

Perhaps you would have raised more if you’d have let the bidding run until folks get home from work, some of us didn’t get a chance to have a bid as we have no internet access at work :(

Yes it is only a key ring & yes I already donate to charity every month, but I’d still have bid more than £15 for it

Ah well, short fairly well written in a non capitals way rant over.

A friend of mine’s cat loves ear wax, it doesn’t gross the owner out though, they started the addiction, the cat goes nuts for it.

I have no idea how they found out the cat likes ear wax

You went on a Holiday to SurfMatt 8O

So he (SurfMatt) didn’t flounce off then, he’s been creating his lair of Awesome high up in the mountains. Wonder how a 320D coped up there….

He wasn’t stroking a cat on his lap & demanding vast sums of money was he?

Kevevs I saw the Sultans Of Ping in ’91 @ Teeside Poly, from what I remember it was a good gig, mind you I don’t remember much… 80p a pint :)

Also saw The Levellers @ Middlesbrough Town Hall in ’91, another brilliant band live

Not bad for a sub £400 bike build

Could easily shed more weight, but I don’t really feel the need to

Not sure what my next bike will be, but we are about to stock Cannondale, so maybe sell the Orange 5 & get a ‘Dale instead

Or a modern 120mm steel hardtail

    Or a Ti frame

Or another retro project. £400 & I have built up a 24lb steel hardtail with XT drivetrain

I do know which bikes I will be keeping: 2010 Cube AMS Pro R1, ’98 Orange Clockwork & ’93 KHS Montana Pro

To anyone with health issues get well soon, it’s not fun looking at bikes & not really being able to ride them

Some Cube OE tyres have a Cube logo on them, don’t think they all do though

IIRC there’s new Schwalbe logos for 2011, so they (CRC pics of Cube bikes) may look different to the 2010 ones you have recieved

You tighten the top bolt to 2.5-3Nm, not fully tight, before doing the bottom bolt up to the same torque, if you go by the book

Personally I alternate between top & bottom bolts until they are tight enough to just move when you hit them firmly with the palm of your hand & the gap between the clamp is equal top & bottom. Never had any issues on any of the dozens of R1 brakes I’ve fitted over the last year doing it this way

Not Casio/Nikon, but I swapped a card from an ancient Kyocera camera to a Panasonic TZ3, it needed formatting before I could use it for anything in the Panasonic.

Syntace have a couple of clamp designs for stems & bars, have a look on their website for more info, as I can’t remember off the top of my head which is which & they’re not cross compatible & I don’t want to give out the wrong info;)

Those are the first two frame failures I’ve seen on a Cube

I’ve worked in the local Cube dealers for a year & we’ve had them in stock for over two years & we have not had a single frame failure in that period, so the gaffer tells me.

Cube are good for honouring warranty stuff, we’ve had very little go wrong, bar a batch of RS Reba’s with a dodgy seal (very well known fault) which were sorted by Fisher under warranty.

Cube do put together well made bikes with great specs for a good price & the bike weights are very competitive.

They’ve been in the UK for around 4 years & they started in ’93 IIRC, they’re very popular in mainland Europe & not that rare so help is not too far away if something did go wrong

Most of the MTB range does come with a longer than you think necessary stem, must be a European thing!

The Fritzz’s we’ve sold still as far as I know have the OE stem & bars on them, the owners rate then highly as a whole bike & haven’t mentioned about any issues with the stem length or bar width, but it’s all personal preference as to what length/width you run

Technically you have to buy a whole bike, not a frame & some components

Muddy Fox & Silver Fox have utterly devalued the brand that once was up there with some of the best

Saracen kinda did the same, but hopefully they can pull it around with Madison helping out, the new Kili looks lush

I don’t see Muddy Fox pulling it back from where they are now…

I used them while ago (year or two) don’t remember anything about them, so the service can’t have been bad as you tend to remember crap shops!

just remove the excess lube on the plates and use as is no need to degrease and relube, besides the relube won’t penetrate as deeply into the chain as the factory lube does
