DD Hammocks sell a great range of…tarps. good quality and worth every penny.
just get a load of cordage and line locks so that you can adjust the additional guy points to suit the set up.

I use mine in all conditions, from bivvying, to setting up as a lean-to for enjoying the view or a simple A-frame tent set up should the weather get nasty

    Russianbob:
that washer is definitely still in there as I removed, cleaned and replaced that when I took the freehub apart to check for issues there.

my assumption was where in the diagram you have the rubber o-ring (No.2)I was thinking a washer like No.9 would help stop the adapter from rubbing against the bearing and stopping it from freely turning. but as per the diagram this does not seem to be the case.
and asi have never seen the underside of the QR adapter before I cannot say whether any wear is a normal occurance

    thanks

I thoroughly recommend the Exped Down-mat 7. 7cm deep and down lined loveliness. packs down silly small too. my only gripe would be the inflation which takes a bit of practice and isn’t much good in torrential wind n rain when bivvying.
but for a tent it’s pure luxury…hence the price.

an alternative and one which is very comfortable is the Thermarest z-rest sol. it looks like a normal foam mat but is egg carton dimpled which traps heat and forms to your body. I’ve had as good a nights sleep on one of those as I have which the down-mat

i have most of my camping kit down to the essentials only now which is good.
it took a bit of practice though, now I have a grab box with all of my kit and a few packing lists depending on what type of camping / time of year.

the items that are the bane of my packing (but which are mostly essential) is clothing. I always end up taking way too much, one set for warm weather, one set for cold, one set for wet and so on. spare socks are a given but the rest hardly ever gets used.

oh, and the ex was a nightmare, tea lights as above, double futon mattress and matching duvet / pillows, half the kitchen including the sink…I could go on

If you’re anywhere near Bristol I have a pair of unused Commencal Max Max forks you can have
(by Commencal I mean generic non-branded)

They are QR and can take v’s or discs

If you’re worried about the strength of a carbon Santa Cruz just check out the video of the SC guys testing the strength of their carbon Blur frame (I think) the fact that it takes three guys repeatedly cracking it on the corner of a piece of machinery just to get a crack in the downtube says a lot about it’s strength.

today Ray-Ban has a sale on. it seems all sunglasses are £16.88 on their website. unless the link I looked at took me to a scam site.
also it was quite surprising to see all the sunglasses banner ads once i’d clicked on this thread.

A company I used to work for had a revelation one day when our servers went down. no one was able to do any work so the management went into meeting mode and only then realised that the business continuity plan that had put in place….was only saved onto the servers

Car drivers buying cars on Ebay whilst driving? that’s a bit of a specific complaint, do you get that a lot where you live?

i’d move out of the way if there’s room, polite cough if not.

Blur Ltc +1. i’d ignore any preconceptions about the geometry until you’ve tried one out for size.
As while to the eye it looks to be too short on the top tube, and once you sling a leg over it seems that the top tube is too short, once you’re actually riding the bike it doesn’t even come into it.
it is light, pedals well, agile, and most importantly (for me) it is extremely good fun. the kind of bike that leaves you with a massive grin ride after ride.

    Amedias:

I mean both, I do not appreciate them expecting a free / easy ride AND I don’t appreciate them being in my personal space.

and yes even though there is nowt in the space around me, it is still my space. if I chose to stop and you haven’t given me enough space then you are going to pile into the back of me, therefore you are invading my space. until the day that bikes have to have brake lights as cars do then the riders behind should be providing clear space for all eventualities.

I’m not trying to be agro here, or be some die hard anti roady / drafting type as the intonation of what I am trying to put across is not always clear.
so on that note I am furkin off, I wish you all well on your riding exploits whatever and wherever they may be

    Crispy:

How is ‘braketesting’ any more dangerous than say a blow out at speed or a mech through the spokes? either way the person behind is going to have a hard time getting out the way if they’re sat on your wheel.

if you are uninvited and unwanted then accept any behaviour that comes your way…or put the pedals down and go faster, as that seems to be the roady advice.

and as above, the main complaint here seems to be the die-hard commuters.

But Dragon, you say if someone doesn’t like it they should either talk to the other cyclist or just stop.
why (as the person who has taken up the draft) is it not your responsibility to enquire if the rider in front minds?

effectively those who advocate it are saying if you don’t like me on your back wheel, pedal faster or stop. But you are the ones invading MY personal space not the other way around.

As per my above post, this is not while out on a sociable ride, it’s while riding to work, so no, it’s not purely for exercise other than to get to work and pay for my crank habit.

re the free ride, no, I don’t have to pedal any harder but then why should I accept it when somebody thinks they can benefit from my output. They wouldn’t appreciate it if I sat outside their house and used their Wi-Fi, I mean it’s not costing them any extra is it?

why don’t roadies start some code of conduct for drafting, ie, ask if the rider up front minds, then take turns etc. don’t just assume it’s ok to do so. and yes I understand when blowing out of your *ss it’s hard to speak so maybe they can have a sign across their lycra clad backsides stating they’re ok with drafters.
I shall continue to wear my baggies with the slogan “I BRAKE FOR DRAFTERS”

ah, but i’m on my trusty mtb which to be fair has taken more than a little beating in it’s time so is more than capable of taking a little more.
Plus i’m not talking full blown two wheeled skids, just enough for a puff of tyre smoke and for the suspension to dive (which also means I have to get my harris over the back wheel to prevent going OTB so the rider is faced with daunting prospect should they decide to continue)

not that I advocate this kind of behaviour to anyone else of course.

my issue is that I am not getting this on a 50 mile ride out in the middle of nowhere, this is on a cycle path commute into town.

I find a pair of 203mm rotors and braking hard does the trick. it sure puts things in perspective for the recipient

and there are far too many comments on here suggesting the OP should slow down, speed up or move over. why should somebody adjust how they’re riding because somebody thinks they’re in the TdF and that it’s acceptable to get a free / easy ride.
on a long road ride or group run maybe but not on inner city roads or general riding situations.

you wouldn’t buzz the rear wheel of someone on a trail because you wanted to get past. so why should it be ok on the roads?

may sound a little cheap but I’ve been amazed by the De-Walt safety glasses, £6 a pair at machine mart.
very slightly yellow tinted mirrored lens gives excellent vision in and out of trees and are great for dispersing water / mud.
I have not had a problem with them steaming up as yet, but maybe i’m just not riding hard enough

Is a tapered head tube meant to be about feel or strength? (serious question)

I would’ve assumed that it was done purely to create more surface area where the two tubes join therefore giving greater contact strength.

Also as the lower cup has a larger diameter it means fork crowns / steerer tubes can be made to a larger diameter and again reduce stress at the interface and enable a greater safety element to be built into forks, which in turn would be the only difference in ride feeling.

I’ve always run Avid Flak Jackets, the ferrules lead into what is effectively a long drinking straw. this keeps any flying debris or moisture off the cables and still keeps shifting slick. i’ve never had a problem with fitting them or any longevity issues

Sorry to disapoint, though i have seen that particular Bug on many occasions, darn good fun if i do say so myself.

Looks like i’d better join the herd and get a road bike then, actually i’d rather not if it’s all the same
