I suspect it will settle in with weight on it and need adjusting. Its certainly not right as is.

Hmm, okay. Rode it pretty fast and hard today. Still the same.

If it feels OK it’s probably fine. Might be worth checking the various surfaces for anything stuck in there, and the headset cup being in fully.

Bolt in starnut wasn’t really tightened. Don’t think there’s play now. I’ll check the headset cup!

Probably the paint on the frame causing the headset not to sit properly. You could ask them to ‘face’ the headtube so its perfectly flat. I would have thought they would have done this already or is it not done any more?

They said they had done facing.

I’ll just ride the thing 🙂

    Worthwhile read on this subject:

    https://www.pinkbike.com/news/exploring-the-relationship-between-handlebar-vs-stem-length.html

    Nice article, thanks.

+1 get a 12deg Syntace and you knock about 16mm off the effective stem length, compared to ‘std.’ 8deg bars.

Have been looking at that as an option, but the SQlabs 3OX 12 and 16 degree has more rise (45mm).

    I’ve got a 20mm boxed new. I’ll send you a message

    Thanks, have replied.

That’s an odd one op. Can’t say as I’ve ever seen that one let alone another similar model. Do you mind me asking why you are after that style stem? I mean to say, can you achieve similar by messing around with the cockpit in general?

Tickles me! I have a (very) long, low and slack bike and it seems like it would be a nice fit. For me, stems have always been better the shorter they are. Been riding some motorized bikes and for those it’s just how it is. Like so:

    What about something from mondraker?

I believe they ended up using the Stoic FG stem for their bikes after leaving the Mondraker centre stem. The 0mm Mondraker centre stem is not available either.

I have to ask – why the long seatube (as opposed to shorter seat tube and more seatpost showing)
Is it looks, handling, fit, ability to fit a big frame bag?

Looks and fit. I’ve noticed this geo often has a higher stack (which I’m after). The 64cm Disc Trucker (which I’m now looking at), the Trek 520 and Pelago Stavanger are right at the top when it comes to stack.

The 62 is what I have; this is a picture of it with the 2” Supremes:

    Excellent news!

I think I can see why mine couldn’t fit 2″ tyres. Different dropouts at the rear and looks like longer chainstays. I’d have kept it otherwise. They weren’t light. 🙂

Have the dropouts changed recently? Chainstay length is the same from size 56 up to 64.

Have you looked at Brothers Cycles, few there? Bombtrack Arise 2 available as frameset.

Yup, sadly didn’t have what I was looking for. Arise 2 has a slope and a short seat tube. Brother Kepler has 42mm clearance without fenders.

Mk1s had straight chainstays, Mk2 (bigger run, I think?) had curvy ones. I’ve had 2″ Fat Franks, 2″ Race Kings, and 2.1″ Thunder Burts in mine.

    Good to know, thanks.

Breezer Radar? Takes up to 2.1″ without mudguards. TT has a little slope to it (like Genesis fugio not vagabond) don’t know what they cost in Europe but the year end/previous years sell off prices used to be pretty good.

A nice bike, but plenty of slope as I see it.

The Kona Sutra can’t be far off perhaps(?)

The Sutra LTD is what I have now. Can take at least 2.2″ tires, but maxes out at 58cm seat tube. I’m looking for 64 cm or so. Unproportionally long legs is my problem.

Kona Rove LTD has a pretty flat tt and biggish tyres, don’t know what size it’ll take Max.

Same with this, maxes out at 58cm seat tube.

I’ve used a few 2″ tyres with guards in my 700c Disc Trucker. A little care is needed with choosing the guards and the tyres: I believe I have 55mm Bluemels guards (albeit with better stays etc from SKS Chromoplastics) which seem to give optimum clearance, and I’m using 2″ Big Apples. 2″ Marathon Supremes also work fine; 2″ Marathon Almotions are very tight on clearance; however, a 29×2″ WTB Nine Line does just about fit.

Thanks for the input and some actual tyre recommendations. I actually think the 62cm (actually something like 64cm C-T) Disc Trucker is the closest I can get right now if Sam doesn’t build the Peregrine this spring.

    Thanks everybody!

Black Mountain Cycles made an interesting frame. It ticked all the boxes except for not having disc brakes. A year or so go ago, when they moved to disc brakes, the also introduced a sloping top tube. Dang.

Seems I will have to go bespoke to fulfill this dream one day.

Were there 2 Peregrines? I sold mine because I couldn’t fit 2″ tyres.

Seen plenty pictures of them running 2″ tires. Might have been some changes during its existance.

All city Gorilla Monsoon, but not 700cc. However also expensive, even more so than soma. Surly straggler as in the previously mentioned threads. Are you dead set on the horizontal toptube? You could look at Crust bikes, but again these’ll be expensive.

As you say, the Monsoon is 650b and there’s plenty of bikes that ticks the horizontal top tube checkbox with 650b. I think Crust Bikes’s roomiest 700c frameset is “The Dreamer” takes 48mm (without fenders?), but not really horizontal top tube. $1,675 before import and taxes too.

I’ve never seen one in the wild, but Pelago Stavenger? All City Space Horse looks like it’d be pretty close too.

I’ve tried the Stavanger twice and it’s a beautiful frame. Framesets currently sold out and max 37mm with fenders though. Similar to Space Horse which maxes out at 38mm.

Thanks, very helpful! If someone has found a 2.8″ tyre that fits without rub in the rear — feel free to chime in. 🙂

OK, 2018 and 2019 frame is the same. Orange themselves state 2.6″ official maximum tyre size. What is the largest tyre you’ve been able to fit without rub?
