Have a look on Marketplace etc… for a Metcal one. It’s night and day difference with anything else I’ve used previously.

    I enjoyed it, but…

“Harris managed to dry hump the Dirty Rascal free” Yeah like f… did he. That was proper bogged. If they got that out on their own they would have shown it. Blatantly towed out by one of the crew cars.

    F35 was impressive

I’ve never had much luck with those vacuum bleeders, they just seem to suck air in through the threads on the bleed nipples. The instructions say to grease the threads first but this doesn’t work very well, or for very long.
What I have had the most success with is a Gunson Eezibleed kit. This pushes the fluid through using air pressure from a tyre. Just make sure the cap is on tight or you will make a right mess. I always add a jubilee clip around the cap as the seal is never as good as it could be.

On trade-in day, get a mate to tow it just round the corner from the dealer, drive it in and park in the furthest corner of the car park. Collect new van, sign the paperwork and off you go.

Yep, do your search as usual, then tick the ‘Completed listings’ checkbox in the left hand panel with the other filters.

Just had a thought: cover your ass. Send an email to the effect of “I will implement this, but I need it to be known that I’ve looked into it and other IT professionals don’t think it’s a great idea as it presents a security risk.”

I’ve been in IT since 1998. The two best tools are: a kettle so you can go make a cuppa and see if it fixes itself and a Teflon suit.

This is a great suggestion. I think that given the response on here I might first try the “Have you considered sharepoint” approach, with a few pro’s thrown in. We have a 1Gbps dedicated line for < 30 of us, so whilst it will get a workout I reckon it should cope.

As for the best IT tools, you forgot about the special turn-it-off-and-on-again finger that no end user seems to possess.

NT4 was probably about the last time I did any Windows sysadmin type work, so forgive my outdated terminology. Moving the whole lot to OneDrive isn’t really an option right now.

The general consensus seems to be the file server is the best place to put it, so there it shall go.

Many thanks all for your input.

2008 should a facelift model, so you’ll get front cup holders and usable door pockets too! Auto or manual?

My wife would probably go for that. BUT 6% is not low alcohol. You need to be < 2% really to call it low alcohol, and there is definitely a growing market for this – just look at how many low alcohol beer are springing up in posh pubs.

Oh, and if going D5 I’d pick auto over manual.

I really fancy a V50 D5. I have a similar budget to the OP, and can get a c70k miler for that money. Is there any reason to run a mile?

I’m not familiar with the D5 engine, but the general opinion seems to be that it’s pretty good. Just make sure you choose some decent tyres. Even my 2.0d has too much power for the budgets to sensibly cope with, especially on a wet road.

Interesting, the V50 2.0 D is the one i’m considering. Seems to be plenty about.
How is the boot space for bike carrying duties?

With the rear seats down, just chuck it in whole. Seats up it’s a wheel off job.

Any reason a Focus estate isn’t on your list?

Probably because they’re awful. My wife has a hatch version. It has no redeeming features.

Volvo V50 on the other hand is a great car. I’ve got the 2.0d and it’s quick enough and economical. Comfortable and well screwed together from decent quality parts. I’d have another.

Plan B sounds fine to me. Just use plenty of long screws on the additional supports.

Phone paypal. They are actually quite helpful on the phone, and will be all over this like a rash. Any fraud gets swiftly acted upon, and they’ll more than likely issue a refund too.

Yep, it’s basically a scam. My daughter has non-kids version + rubber case, with a kids account setup on it for her to use.

Just been looking at this for the wife.

Sony Xperia L3 was the chosen one.

An MG I think I’d have a go myself, it’s the super close packaging of the engine bay on this that puts me off.

The car is on 191k, and I’ve decided that I want to get it to 200k before it’s allowed to die. The rest of the clutch feels fine, so I’m tempted to just replace the broken bit for now.

Laminate worktops are 90% glue, and will blunt a router bit fairly quickly. Sharp bit = clean cut. And don’t try and do it in one pass. I’d recommend at least 3 or you will kill the bit even quicker.

Frayed cable? ‘Stop’ being where a frayed bit hits the sleeve and needs an extra push to bend out of the way / slide in.

I learnt on a Pentax MX. Absolutely brilliant camera. Everything completely manual, it only had a battery for the built in light meter. Took some of my best pictures on that.

These days I use a DSLR for convenience (Pentax K200d) but apart from the digital storage, it’s a step backwards in control and usability.

On EGR valves, stuck closed you probably won’t notice, might even run better. Stuck open is when it all starts to go wrong.

Whistling noise = air leak = split hose.

Bad EGR will cause it to run like a sack of poo, but unlikely to whistle.

I’ll have to look up how hard it is to change the alternator on a Volvo V50

2.0d? I did mine recently. On the side of a road after it expired. Took me about an hour, and I’m fairly handy with the spanners. 99% of it is accessed from the top, you just need to get an aviation spanner in from underneath to release the belt tensioner.

The ‘new’ alternator I fitted was 2nd hand from eBay for £40. Denso DAN930.

I’d do it with a 1mm disc in a grinder, to a line on masking tape. But then I do a lot of cutting stuff up with a grinder.

Thanks all. I don’t do much welding, a disposable bottle lasts me at least 6 months, and I like how it’s small enough to clip onto the welder and slide under the bench for storage. If I did more, I’d definitely switch to a proper bottle from one of the various suppliers.

Do you own a compressor and a blow gun? Persuade the washer to pop up and grab hold of it, disconnect the feed pipe off the bottom, hold the blow gun against the nozzle(s) and blast some air back through it.

And this is precisely why I always seem to end up fixing our cars myself. My v50 has recently had a new EGR valve, fuse board out for a full terminal clean, and a new alternator after the old one decided to try welding. The only trips to a garage are for the MOT or new tyres.

Sounds to me like the guy in question was an utter cockwomble and the “being a vegan” thing was just something to the cockwombly about.

I for one find vegans to be fairly useful. Being a lactose intolerant, I often order the vegan option from a menu as I know it won’t leave me rolling around on the floor in pain.

I’ve had full plasterboard sheets diagonally on edge in a SWB Vivaro / Traffic / Primastar. I think you need a no-bulkhead model to do it tho.

I really don’t find it that irritating.

Newer hobs are much better than the old models were. My tip is to buy the most powerful one you can find, and make sure it has 4 induction elements (so not sharing between 2 zones). That pees me off far more than the pulse at lower power feature.
