My Orange Five frame is designed for a standard QR, does that mean this 9mm QR may not fit?

Great, thanks, looks like I’ll need a new QR then 🙁

You could try heating the cranks with a heat gun. That should do it.

Sounds like you’re going to have to resort to a pneumatic drill.

Good idea! Can’t go wrong with a Giant either.
Plus that way you will know what kind of parts you need as you can ride it and see how it feels.

Haha, it was in no way patience – just lack of money!
Ummm, kind of, I knew what kind of bike I wanted (ish) I originally wanted an El Guapo, and then I saw a 5 pop up on here, so I bought the frame (It was the right size and pretty cheap and I have a thing for Oranges).
That meant I had to sell the forks I had bought as they wouldn’t fit the five. Managed to sell them for £360 and then bought some Fox 32 Float kashimas off here for £350.
Stuff like brakes and chainset (except cranks) I bought new as I know they can be temperamental.
I bought the rear shock off CRC for an absolute steal – £200ish for a Kashima BV shock.
The build ended up costing around 1.8, but your talking about over 4k new.
In hinesight I would have bought a cheap second hand Giant Reign, as although I’m an alright rider, I don’t need all the mod cons, but I got a bit carried away – when I saw a bargain I went for it!
However, the end result will be awesome I’m sure, and I’ll post some pics when it is done.
My tip would be to get a frame first, and then buy the parts to fit, as different frames obviously have different compatabilities. Stuff like cranks, bars, stem and pedals etc. can be bought second hand, but the moving parts I would be tempted to buy new where possible.
    Hope this helps!

EDIT: Most of the new parts I bought off ROSEBIKES in Germany (sosososo cheap) or CRC if the deal was right.

Building a bike usually ends up being more expensive unless you are very thrifty, or compromise on second hand parts.
If you are fussy about the build though, go ahead, you’d end up with your perfect bike, plus get the satisfaction of building it up!
You’d also learn a lot about maintenance if you don’t know it all already.
After ages of saving I’ve spent a fortune (to me) building up an Orange Five, it’s spec is nearly as good as that of the SE, but I built it up for easily under half the price, however it took 5 months to collect the parts, and I did make one or two mistake buys.

It’s been good fun though, and I can’t wait to build next weekend. Plus it should be perfect and last me a good few years!

I did that with my last bike and I had endless mechanical problems. I couldn’t afford a new bike, so I decided to build one up second hand, except with new parts where I had trouble last time.
The reason this took 5 months is because I am still at college, so my income is minimal and I had a two month period where I couldn’t earn because of exams.

My trail center doesn’t rent out DH bikes, and I see no point in renting an XC bike when I have a road bike I can ride instead. A also cannot afford to shed out god know’s how much for a day’s average riding every weekend.
Don’t place me in the all-the-gear-no-idea category, and don’t be so damn judgmental.

    @mrmo
I have been narky! But with no bike what can I do?!
I’ve been out a few times on my mates bike, but beyond that there’s not much I can do.

    learn how to ride it

I know how to ride it. I’m moving from riding downhill to AM, so should be okay on the skills front. I just meant I’d be a bit rusty after 5 months with no riding. All my parts have been 2nd hand or new, but with good deals, so the bike is looking to be pretty good value at the moment.

Yeah, there’s no way I can afford a holiday, but I’ll make up for it by riding the sh*t out of it 🙂

Ah that sucks. Maybe he’ll apologize when he sees how well you are doing?

My problem is that I always end up thinking the bike will be sh*t unless I buy the best parts – parts which I can’t even nearly afford.
It’s taken me 5 months now to collect the bits and pieces, I’m going to be awful when I get back on the bike.

Ah damn. I’m building my new bike next weekend providing a certain part turns up.
Looks like I’ve got all this to look forward to.
Already needed to swap out a load of parts due to sizing issues and failures – it was my BB today 🙂

I’m 18 and hoping to go to uni next year. I don’t have a “job” as such, and neither do half of my friends.
My parents give me an allowance, but beyond that, I generally have to fund my own habits (biking mainly). I tried to make money by fixing iPhones and learnt a lot through doing that. I also chop wood and work for my dad who is a carpenter every so often.

Some other people I know literally aren’t allowed jobs in case in jeopordises their “studying” which is ridiculous in my opinion.
Your son seems to be in a pretty normal situation for an 18 year old to me.

Basically, if he has a need of money he will have need of some form of income, and may decide to get a job, so maybe cut his allowance to necessities only?

I’ve promised work to the parents in return for £20 to buy a new BB.
Being my first bike build, and having invested so much time and money in it, I want to get it right first time.
Also, pretty sure the bearings in the non drive side are not right, they are ridiculously stiff and don’t seem to rotate unless under a lot of force.

    06awjudd

Wow that’s cheap, still doesn’t take away from the fact that I have literally, no money.
Guess I’ll have to use it as it is unless some advice comes along.

I’ve just tried spinning the crank with the axle half in, so it only is in contact with the drive side BB cup, it span freely.
I guess this means that the non drive side cup is the one causing the resistance.
Should I bother trying to free up the bearings somehow?
Also, the gritty feeling in the right cup – is this anything to worry about?

Thanks scotroutes, I’ll try an remove some of the grease I packed in.

Such a sad story. My friend’s brother rides for UK youth and was holding him when he died.

He was apparently a really nice guy, such a shame.

    Rest in peace.

Nice innovation! Part of me hopes it doesn’t work after shedding £60 odd on a new chain device.
Looks pretty neat as well – you wouldn’t know it was hand made.

    Love it!

I had the same problem two years ago. I had £500 to spend, and ended up getting a carbon forked road bike.

I also ride 20″ bikes and I got a 58cm frame – seems to fit fine.
I ride mine with clipless, but wish I had some flats, because they are a pain if you are planning to get off the bike anywhere – the best option would be the pedals which are flat on one side and cleated on the other.

In hindsight, I wish I had bought a second hand steel road bike, or even better, a CX bike – but that’s just because I don’t take my road cycling seriously and I would prefer the durability of the other options.

I have no idea why you would spend that kind of money on a lid. It’s not as if it has performance enhancing properties.

    You’re just buying the brand.

    Just a thought… Earth’s land area: 150,000,000 sq km… Population: 6,700,000,000… Area per person: 22,000 sq m… even if just 10% is usable that’s 2,200 sq m per person..

You only need 4 acres to feed someone….less if we go GMO big time.

    4 acres is 16,200m^2…..

This place seems to be worse than anywhere for spreading the plague. Hardly a week goes by without some boringly proud Dad coming on here and happily rabbling on about his latest offspring.

Yeah well done super Dad, really impressive those 3000 nappies in the landfill…

There’s nothing wrong with having kids…..
