It's more to do with stiffness and power transfer, but as many people have already stated, the fitness level of the rider is going to control how fast a bike is.

You're a cyclist, and unfortunately all cyclists get spots and sores down there, with the odd saddle sore thrown in for good measure.

Firstly, if you find prefer baggies, stick with them. But wearing lycra shorts with a decent chamois will certainly help in the long term.

Use chamois creme, Assos is possibly the best – about £9 a pot, but well worth it. After you've returned from a long ride, and you've showered and what not, you could always apply some more chamois creme directly to the skin, I do this from time to time, and again it helps.

Look at your current saddle(s), do they have stitching or detailing on the area where you sit, if so then these stitches can cause a sore arse as well.

Finally, avoid standing around in your shorts after a ride, easy mistake but get out of them as soon as you can, otherwise nappy rash can result.

Was going to mention the hygiene issue, never wear dirty shorts, I'm sure you don't though.

Why didn't you stop and ask where he got it? Not as if you'll see him riding around on it again any time soon.

Nothing to do with the tyres, just lack of riding ability I'm afraid.

Ha, I knew someone would dig that thread out, but if they are so concerned about my riding ability why put me in the 'team'?

As for being grumpy BigJohn, I presume you're being sarcastic. I'd been lead to believe I was riding on a team bike, and in the team kit, brilliant. In reality, I'm filling a gap on a team that is a man down. If I'd have known this in the first place I wouldn't be on here talking about it.

@scaredypants: Yes, of course I knew about the costs of getting down there, that's a given, I was replying to a question. I had been told I was riding a bike, which I'm not, therefore that hasn't met my 'expectations' if you like.

I'd be wearing my own gear anyway, no jersey for me either!

I'll probs just ride it to be honest, though this will be the last time I do them a favour.

And yeah, I would be paying to get down there.

The podium, wouldn't be in the 'fun' cat.

Phew, least I now know what the general consensus is.

Worst thing is, as it's something pretty cool, I've told a few people "yeah, riding for……. this weekend" like anybody would.

This is also team who would podium.

BTW, the race entry would be 'free'. Think I'd rather pay and ride solo if I'm honest. Do hope people can see why I'm annoyed, I don't expect the world, just a bike for the event would be nice.

Put im into another tank, with clean water, while you clean the other one out. Sounds a bit odd, but hold him by the tail and pull him backwards through the water, as this will open up the gills (we’ve had fish come back to life by doing this)

Thanks guys, it’s completely knocked me for six, but jeez, I can’t begin to comprehend how my mate is coping.

They cost 8p to produce. Decathlon they are around £2 IIRC, if not, Halfords have 3 for 2 on…£9.98.

I used Continental Speed King 2.3’s at Bristol Bike Fest, which is mainly roots/rocks. They were fine, no problems.

Team mate used Kenda Small block eights, and again he was fine.

I honestly don’t understand all this chat about tyre choice anyway, all I could hear at mayhem was “I really don’t know what tyres to us” etc

If you are a good confident rider, they make very little difference! If unsure, just slow down.

    Thanks guys, really helpful.

Yeah, I really don’t wont to leave a couple of K’s worth of bikes just strapped to a railing, eff that!

I’ve only just got my grades through, so based on those I’m just searching through relevant courses now, but it’s of great importance that my bikes can fit in the room along with me. Like I say, no way can I leave them outside.

    Cheers.
