Road tyres

I’ve bought a 2nd set of wheels for the gravel bike and am planning on putting some road tyres on.

So what’s the score? I’m only after budget tyres pref as big volume as possible as the roads here are less than smooth

Any good deals available?

Although in fairness, they are excellent tyres!

Yeah, this – worth the outlandish pricing imo.

I have them running tubeless on my “road” wheels for my gravel bike.

Anyone else miss the days that you could buy a top end tyre like a pro 1 or go4000 for 25 quid. Still not cheap but nowhere near the 50+ quid they cost now

Not long ago I can remember £45 a pair offer.

Be careful of cheaper Conti’s. I had some on a pair of new wheels I bought a few years back, first rainy day and six punctures going to work was not funny!

Sorry to say it I have tried all sorts and end up going back to Conti 4 seasons or GP4/5k. I used to change 4 seasons for GP4/5k when the clocks change, tbf I now only run 4 seasons on my commuting bike and only in then winter. When new GP4/5k’s are amazing. Not just me but a big bunch of cycling mates all experience the same.

Got my first pair of GP4000S IIs for £50 from Halfords in ’18… Those were the days!

I can’t really tell if they are quicker, but I swear the GP5000s wear quicker, my two year old 32mm rear is looking like this summer might be its last.

I get about 6,000 km out of a pair. I bin them as soon as the wear markers are gone.

The current GP5000S TR are £75. It is a great tyre, but that is a lot of money for 275g of rubber and kevlar.

I use GP5’s too in 32 on the gravel bike’s spare wheels

There definitely seems to be a massive tubeless tax on road tyres. I managed to get some Wtb Exposure 36c for about £20 each a few weeks ago which seems a pretty good deal.

There was some gp5000’s in 28mm for cheap on sports pursuit recently.

Prices are taking the absolute piss for tyres. I wanted 2 corsa speed tyres for my tt bike. 75 quid a pop. That’s Half what I pay for the eagle f1 tyres on my sports car.

Merlin had the standard Corsa G2.0s at ~£33 a month or so back, never tried them and not clued up on their naming and hierarchy, but they’ve gradually creeped back up to £38.50 now… Might regret not buying one depending on what happens with that 32mm GP5000 rear.

I have a pair of 32mm Gravelking slicks on my gravel bike ‘road’ wheels – they’re ideal for my local, rough singletrack roads strewn with gravel and potholes and feel plenty quick enough when I get the chance to give it some beans. FWIW GP5000s are reknown for wearing fast and can be incredibly tight fit on some rims like Hunt.

I did a bike packing trip around the Elan Valley on the 30mm mile munchers recently, considering they look like road tyres they performed amazingly well on the gravel / mud I was riding on.
Might grab some of the larger sized ones next time.

Yep, paid something insane like £150 for a pair of Tubeless Pirelli P Zero Race TLR SL. I really wanted the GP5000 hookless variant, but they hadn’t been released when I was looking. However, they’re about the same price as the P Zeros now. It’s like buying car tyres!

Panaracer Gravelking TLC in 35mm is currently £33 at Merlin. Will ride a lot better than some Conti hosepipe. Certainly not worth trying to go any cheaper either.

What Jamz said – I’m running the Gravelking (slick/file tread) TLC 35mm, set up tubeless, and they’re really good.
