Riding with a ureteric stent

Afternoon all.
Getting older sucks, especially when one of these things includes kidney stones. A 6mm stone that continues to be wedged up in the kidney has led my consultant to pull me in for some pew pew laser action to get rid of it under a general.
Problem is, there was always a risk of the ureter being restrictive and them not being able to get the laser tube up to the kidney. Thinking this was just them giving me the usual outside risk spiel, it turns out that actually this happens. And its happened to me.
The result is a utheric stent has been left in for 4-6 weeks until I return again for another GA and the pew pew laser properly.
Obviously, I thought kidney stones were bad, but the pain from the stent after the op was another level (read: screaming and being fed every main relief going until they knocked me out again). Things have calmed down now, and I’m recovering at home after an overnight at the hospital.
I can’t see much specific advice, but I got conflicting info from the docs – I want to know whether I’ll be able to ride. I’m assuming that the twisting from a proper gnar ride is probably out but does anyone here have experience of whether a gentle MTB ride or even some turbo action will be possible?
I’m ok with the fact there will be some discomfort and even more blood, but if I can at least stop myself going mad while I wait, that would be some consolation. Has anyone any experience?
For all those who’ve not had this? Pray you never ever do. The stent, and also having a doc jab your knob with a local to then shove a catheter up there in addition, means I had probably the most traumatic night of my life save for when I watched my favourite pub burn down, I mean, see my kids come out of the business end of my ex wifes bits when they were born.
howarthpFull MemberYes, been there and I feel for you. The most painful thing I’ve ever had (the stent) and I’ve had a few painful things.
It was three years ago when I had mine. Took a few weeks for the discomfort to subside and I recall doing some rides but didn’t really feel in the mood.
Good luck!
birkyFree MemberMy most recent stone was treated by laser and a stent left in all under GA.
I can’t remember cycling but if I went a walk there was always noticeable blood in my pee.
After 3 weeks I went to the hospital to have it removed and was told I wouldn’t need an anaesthetic 🙁skiboyFree MemberJust picking up on this thread having just been introduced to the pleasures of both having a 5mm stone ( I thought I may die the pain was so bad !!) and having a JJ stent stuck in through my Japs from my bladder to my kidney.
I had week in hospital due to my kidney getting a bit annoyed with the goings on but was able to make the 2 week family holiday in Ibiza (quiet end, no parties, i’m 53 anyway and cannot be arsed with such goings on) anyway I’m back now and have another weeks holiday before I go back to work.I’m desperate to get out on the bike. my stent makes me want to pee all the time but have found plenty of Ibuprofen stops the irritation of the bladder to a degree.I was wondering if anyone else had tried riding with one in ?,I get pew pew lasered next week then hopefully a week later with have the JJ whipped out. A tip for there unwise, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate, and stop drinking coke or Pepsi Max (my Achilles) full stop.
yosemitepaulFull MemberNeil, probably not too much help really, but I had a ureteric stent after having a 6mm stone removed a few months ago. No, it wasn’t fun, it was uncomfortable and created a considerable amount of blood!! Fortunately my op to remove the stone went well and it was only in 4 days but I was told by the consultant and the specialist nurse that I could if I wanted ride and run whilst it was in place. As it was, because it was only in for such a short time I spent those days recovering from the op and anaesthetic so that I couldn’t get out anyway! Interesting, that once removed, the blood stopped within hours. There’s light at the end of the tunnel!
sofamanFull MemberMake sure the string is taped down, otherwise it will **** hurt.
MrOvershootFull MemberFair play, I’ve passed 5 kidney stones the largest was 6mm & apart from enjoying intramuscular Ketamine while passing the last one. I don’t think the thought of riding a bike was anywhere near my list of priorities.
I would advise drinking liquid till your sick of it and keep going. The idea of any of my urinary tract being bounced around on a bike while kidney stones were on the agenda would have been slammed out the window pretty instantly!
