Looks like i've persuaded a few mates to do the Dirty 130 next year for the first time. I'll be riding my 29er hardtail, and looking for an excuse to buy a new set of tyres for the event.
I actually have a set of maxxis crossmark 2.0 in the shed, which i'm sure would be fine, but wondering if i'd be better off with some 700 x 40c-ish gravel tyres?
I’m liking the Vittoria Mezcal I got recently to replace a set of Ardent. Fast rolling but still pretty grippy & they were super easy to set up tubeless.
Mrs grebcrehlien has used Specialized Renegade Control tyres on her 29er for the last two events. She's had no problems with them, but I'm unsure as to whether they're still available.

What are the Mezcals like on tarmac? I ride a lot of tarmac and am currently using WTB Riddler 45Cs, which are great, but I fancy something a little wider and was eyeing up the Mezcals.
The Riddler 45Cs might be worth considering for the OP but we're a bit scarce in the UK the last time I looked.
Shhwobble Big Ones? 2.35? Folding version were on On-One for £30ish posted a short while ago.
Not ridden the Reiver, so don't put much faith in my ideas of their suitability.
They roll pretty well for a ‘proper’ mtb tyre. Central knobs form an almost continuous line.
Cheers for the recommendations so far - is there any significant advantage to going to a lower profile e.g. 45c rather than a 2.0 - 2.2 - I know the latter will be comfier, but will it also be significantly slower?

These look good, a set of those set up tubeless will be super comfy and fast on the rough stuff. I was wondering if there was any point in going lower profile, like on the cx/gravel bikes, but it seems not:-

I've got the 2.35" G-One Speeds, great on the road and dry hardpack. As the ground gets looser and wetter, they perform worse.
For a bang per buck, hard to look past https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/TYSCMRCFOL/schwalbe-marathon-cross-wired-tyre-with-raceguard , which I've got and do well in most terrain, but they aren't light at ~560g and they aren't officially tubeless.
I run the following on my rigid weenie 29er:
front: WTB nine-line 2.25
rear: Schwalbe thunderburt 2.1
both tubeless.
Nine-line works better on the front as it has more bite/knobs. Burt out back is fast, and pretty tough.
