Something on another thread prompted me that i forgot to post this just before Xmas.

Over the course of a month i went a bit nuts and first bought this.

However that had some mechanical issues…. So i sent it back to the dealer and got a refund…

    I then bought this…

But it transpired i didn’t get on with it as well as i expected… So i sent that to a dealer and bought this instead.

    It’s a KTM 790.
790cc parallel twin, making about 100bhp.
they come with every electronic gizmo known to man, traction control, launch control, quick shifter, auto-blipper, ABS, cornering ABS etc etc. Sadly due to the weather i’ve only ridden it once…
Although i did steal a mates one for the day on NYD as it was blocking my bike in 🙂

Well done for keeping the bike industry afloat Steve! It might be a great bike but it’s not a looker is it. Much prefer the 690.

I prefer the looks of the 690 i admit… I had no intention of selling it… But then the 990SDR came up and i thought back to when i should have bought one in 2008 and thought “right i’m getting it…” Then i went all completely bananas and it ended up i had the 950SM that i didn’t actually want.

I rang up Crescents to buy a 690 and somehow ended up with an ex-demo 790.

I absolutely loved the one i Demo’d on the road, on track i was 50-50. One session i loved it, the other, not as much.

But then on the road i love it…

Just booked the first trackday of the year.

    Last one looks neat 👍

I know nothing about bikes really, so what’s an “ autoblipper” do and the “cornering ABS”

Assume the cornering ABS thing keeps you upright around corners 🤷‍♂️🤣🤣

Autoblipper, so it ‘blips’ the throttle when you change down.

with that and the Quickshifter, you don’t use the clutch either up or down the gearbox, just snick the gear lever and hold it wide open. Like in the posh cars when they change down and they have the Bruummm noise on over-rev, that’s not the driver doing it, it’s the vechile (well it CAN be the driver, but not often)

The cornering ABS in theory means even if you grab a handful of brake mid-corner, mid lean, you don’t fall off….. in theory.. I don’t plan on trying that out i hope.

This video gives a decent idea of both the QS and blipper.

The Yak doesn’t really see the need for all these gizmos, but The Yak has been told by some folk that they’re good fun. Luckily The Yak can do his own blipping manually. The Yak has noticed the wee KTM causing quite a stir, especially in the “adventure” guise. The Yak is looking forwards to getting a shot of one.

In many ways i’d agree with the Yak…. it does take away some of the interactive side of things, arguably some of the passion of it and the involvement.

But it is also making it very much easier to ride too, which means you have more ability to concentrate on other aspects of your riding….

Nice one weeksy. To my untrained eye they all look pretty lush to me.

    I agree with Taxi 🙂
    off road
Weeksy, you need to get a Darth Vader outfit to ride that road 790 😉

The Yak feels he must remind Taxi and Fasthaggis about the RC8 and 1290 Suoer Duke. They definitely don’t need knobblies.

Weeksy,The Yak thinks The Yak is getting old. The Yak spends all day dreaming about ZX12s, 7r’s and XR600s, before slipper clutches, quick shifters and riding modes stole everyone’s soul.
The Yak is definitely getting old.

I still fondly remember my old ZX-7R, the best looking bike I ever owned.  However, my new to me 950 SM-R is a fantastic bike to ride and sounds glorious.

Indeed wiseYak, I had forgotten all about the RC8,which were very nice in the white and orange version.
However, the 1290 super does not get a free pass and can stay in the ugly pool 😉

The Yak does agree with Fast Haggis. While the 1290 super duke is indeed rapid, it looks like a modern art masterpiece. Horrific.

Horrific in some guises maybe yes. But in all black, mmmm.

It wouldn’t be the biggest shock ever to see the 790 morph into a 1290 one day. But that depends what we do with this one.

    2018-05-29_08-06-17

I may see it turn into an 899 panigale.

Would have been a much better idea I think!

The 790 is pretty much top of my list for next bike, once June comes and I’ve finished commuting on the 390. Hoping to get a loan of one next time the 390 is in for a service. What’s the tank range like? I’m fancying a multi-day tour of some kind, either deepest darkest Scotland or down to the Mediterranean coast of Spain to see my buddy.

Lol if you’d given me £3000 it could have been yours

The Yak isn’t a fan of all black bikes. The Yak likes nice colours and nice paint. The Yak understands bthere is a place for black bikes, but they usually have been made black with the use of someone’s rattle can in their shed. The Yak wouldn’t pay extra for a “triple black” bike.
The Yak is somewhat knowledgeable on touring Scotland by bike. If you have a tank range of 100 miles you’ll be fine here.
The Yak is attending this event. It’s a good fun and raises money for a good cause. The Yak suggests everyone comes along.
