It’s interesting that the outboard bearing in the freehub is stainless but the inboard one isn’t. The inboard one is also ABEC5, but still, this is the one I’m killing most often.
It doesn’t help hub manufacturers that axles get bigger and cassettes get smaller (10 tooth and even 9) so there’s less room for bearings.
However, remember when hubs had 6001 bearings that lasted forever? Well those have the same OD as the MR17287 and have a 12mm bore. If axle manufacturers could tighten up their tollerances, maybe we could do away with the inner axle in hubs like Hope and use the extra room for bearings.
Shouldn’t be too tricky to do actually. Those 6001 bearings are 8mm wide so there’s ample room in the hub shell and freehub with a little maching. It must be possible.
