You should name her Captain after Flashy.

    Captain Marples.

Sounds like a superhero and will get you a discount on orthopaedic shoes

Whatever you do, just remember that’s someone’s name.

Mrs friends named their new boy Maverick recently.

    Goose jokes welcome.

We went with Maya, pronounced My-a (like the Mayans) She seems to like it. Only met a couple other littlies with the same name but spelt Mya.

Our daughter is Freya, which we both just took one look at and agreed was good, “goddess of love and beauty” isn’t too bad as a meaning either

Our daughter is called Pia (‘Peeya’). Which is Italian apparently but we have also come across it a fair but in Denmark. We love it. Her nickname is Pipi (‘pee pee’). Which is great…but She is french and we live in France and it produces quite a lot of stares at times….

Also when telling her off it can become Pia,Pia No….Which my sisters gormless husband worked out as soon as we let family know her name…

We still think it’s a beautiful name though, rare, but traditional.

    Captain Marples.

My great uncle was Major Marples. Musician with a proper olde times handlebar moustache.

Freya is a lovely name and already on the list. I like Alafair, name of the daughter of the protagonist in a series of novels by James Lee Burke. Mrs F isn’t convinced though

We really liked the name Iona for our daughter – but it didn’t really work with the surname.

Evangeline was also another one the Mrs liked.

Do you have a Naval tradition in the family? If so how about Horatio.

If we had a Naval tradition we’d call her Boaty McBoatface 🙂

iona is a great name, but surnames are important.

    Couldn’t be Cox for example…

We’ve another Amelie. It wasn’t common at the time. Honest.

The boy is called Noah, he was almost called Mordecai or Zephyr but we had an attack of the sensibles.

We did have a list of girls names but I’m jiggered if I can remember any now. The only one that does spring to mind is Imelda.

Doreen was my granny’s name. Doreen Marples will make her sound 85 before she’s even born.

Rhymes with Karen, and easier to spell, apparently (thank you Mother) . Pick a name that has a simple, obvious spelling.

and definitely nothing which people will overwhelmingly assume is a boy (Rowan).

Oddly, I’ve never assumed that Rowan was a male name.
My g/f has two daughters, Briar and Rowann, Briar from Briar Rose, I’ve always loved Jenny as a name, even before I discovered it was my Gran’s name, no idea why, I just love the name. I know two Charlotte’s, one who is Lottie to everyone, the other is Charlotte, will not accept it being shortened.
A perfectly ordinary name can be just perfect for one person, and just not work for someone else, for some undefinable reason.

Are you me? That was my Grans name and she lived to be 89. Some names just sound old.

You can’t call a child Vinegar Tits. That would just be wrong.

Oh no, mine wasn’t a Marples she was a Walker. I was just adding yours to the end of it. Sadly she died when I was 8 or 9, she was bloody brilliant, knew loads of rude/sweary songs that would inevitably end up in me or my brother getting a clip round the ear if we repeated them within earshot of parents.

Jenny is a nice name, unless your surname’s Taylor

I also like Charlie as a girl’s name (Charlotte if you must). Charlies sound a bit naughty.

My Daughter is Nancy, named after the French town as I liked the way it looked on the sign driving to Morzine years ago. Good job the wife liked it too. ;o)

I’m sure there were some Americans who called their daughter Llanelli for the same reason.

I used to work with a chap with daughter called Iona.

    Their surname was McIntosh…

Criteria I had for naming our daughter were:

Nothing on any top 10 lists, ever.
    Nothing religious.
Something authentic (we’re Scottish so as nice as some French names are they were out)
I wanted her to be the only girl in her class at school with her name.
    Initials don’t spell anything.

We chose a very rare old Gaelic name that we instantly loved, and we’ve never met another one yet. I live in fear that the name gets “discovered” and becomes one of the next trendy names.

Some of my family worried about my choice for my lad, Gabriel, as they thought he’d get teased at school (Gay etc). I thought it was a strong name and so it’s proving to be. All now agree it suits him perfectly.
