I’m pretty sure the term is garden leave, incorrectly changed to gardening leave by most people.

    Carry on.

It’s whatever your employer chooses to call it, it’s authorised paid absence.

The phrase “Gardening Leave” emerged following its use in an episode of Yes Prime Minister. It had / has the “-ing” suffix. It was a made-up, fictional device used as a plot point in one episode.

Nice, which is really Garden/ing leave by another name.

I wouldn’t worry about sitting at your laptop all day ‘just in case’ – remember missed call? Sorry I was in the loo, did I get that e-mail? Sorry, broadband is playing up today, I’m just waiting for the router to reboot.

Gardening leave is easy to get, just disclose sensitive information as a whistleblower to the relevant authority and then tell HR. Not that I would ever do such a thing, but I do know of people who have done that.
