FlareMax standover clearance?

My new gen 4 FlareMax arrived yesterday – hooray!

But I’m a bit worried I’ve got the wrong size. I’m 175cm, regular leg length. I went for medium with with a 150mm dropper and 130mm fork. The standover clearance is zero between the top tube and my important parts. Even with the seatpost all the way down (fully extended) it feels like the saddle might be a few mm too high. I’ve not had a ride yet as I need to fit the brakes and it was chucking it down last night.

I’ll give Cotic a ring later in the week once I’ve got it properly built.
But in the meantime does this sound like I might have gone too big?

Top tube height wouldn’t really concern me. The seat post is fairly short, so for someone of your height you should be able to get the seat well out of the way. What kind of dropper is it? Perhaps the stack height is not great. According to Cotic, the max insertion depth is 213. A oneup 180 is 267mm. If you measure your BB to saddle rail you should be able to calculate how much room you have for a dropper.

Purple or grey? At your height it sounds like medium would be spot on. I’m 185 on a large and it’s perfect. 150mm dropper but could go much longer, so I think the seattube is relatively short. Can’t say I’ve noticed standover clearance being an issue.

I’m on a medium Gen 4 FlareMAX with 140mm forks. I’m 173cm and just about manage with a 180mm dropper. Only done a couple of rides, but fit feels good and haven’t noticed standover being a problem.

A size small would definitely be too small for me.

Its the grey one (wanted stealth look to avoid attracting attention). It looks awesome although I really like the purple one too.

I’ve got the X Fusion Manic dropper. I’m wondering if it’s properly installed as there is a “ting” noise coming from the bottom of the seat tube when the lever is pressed.

I’m also going to double-check the frame measurements to be certain it is medium!

That last bit of your post was something I nearly mentioned earlier! Are you sure you weren’t sent a large in error.

I should’ve mentioned that mine is a OneUp V2 dropper so 180mm drop may be equivalent to 150mm on an X Fusion post.

It should say somewhere on the frame what size it is – backside of the seatube near the BB.

The “ting” thing with the X-Fusion is a bit of a “they all do that sir”. We’ve got 2 in the house – one on my other half’s Flare, the other a 50mm drop one on my Fugio. There’s a loose shaft, not dissimilar in dimensions to a chunky spoke, that is part of the activation mechanism and can rattle. Sometimes mine does, sometimes it doesn’t. Not noticeable when riding.

I’m a couple of cm taller than you on a med. Rocketmax – but a bit short in the leg for my height. There’s a basic issue with “standover”. and that’s that with a 29″ wheel, an appropriate length fork, and a headtube long enough to weld the TT and DT to – the front end of the TT is always going to be quite high, no matter how short the seattube is. It’s never been a practical problem when out riding – in fact I can’t even recall standover being really a fucntional issue ever since I was riding a 21″ Raleigh Amazon…

How much ‘length’ have you between the collar and the seat post clamp?

FWIW I’ve a large (with a 140mm fork) and while I’ve a lotta inseam (+35″) I’m still about a foot off having an ‘issue’ – are you really sure you’re a ‘regular’? 😉

So I’ve measured the frame and confirmed it’s a medium.
I’ve got about 25mm between the seat clamp and the collar.
I always buy regular jeans trousers so I’m assuming I’m regular.
And I’ve got two other medium Cotics (roadrat and MK2 soul) which fit fine and have a least 50mm standover clearance.

I’ve not had any real experience on a long geometry frame so I am expecting things to feel a bit different. I’m moving towards thinking the frame is ok, but I need a different dropper to lose the 5mm of fully extended seat height.

One Up is your friend.

stand over on a full suspension is usually less than on a hard tail of the same size because when you sit on the the bike it will sag to a similar height as the rigid bike. when you straddle the top tube the bike is at its unsagged height.

I had the family assessing whether I looked right sighting on the bike over breakfast. The conclusion was that is looks the right size and that the bike cannot live in kitchen. (can’t get it up the stairs into the bedroom).

Not gonna solve the standover issue but I’m not following the saddle too high issue if sounds like you’ve still got room to adjust it down?

FWIW I never think of stand over as a thing these days since droppers came along.

The 25mm is the lowest the post will go before it hits something inside the seat tube.
When I say standover height I mean the height of the top tube in relation to plums when standing over the frame i.e. not sitting on the saddle. Like this So two separate issues.

Spoke to Cotic today sounds like a One up is indeed the solution to the saddle height issue.
