The other day I got a puncture and managed to send half of the only CO2 canister I was carrying into the atmosphere rather than into my repaired tyre which was a shame for me and also for the nice person who eventually stopped to lend me his pump.

I decided that I should probably carry a regular pump but as I’d been using this Giant steerer tube CO2 storage thing I was reluctant to strap something to the frame of my bike. Here’s my solution!

It’s nothing fancy, just the end of a spent CO2 canister (thank you @mrwhyte for sending me an empty one) araldited on to the end of a Topeak Micro Rocket pump which then clicks nicely into the magnetic fork bung from the Giant kit.

    Before:

    After:

And I can still pop a CO2 in there if I feel the need:

I wondered what you were up to 🙂

My steerer is closed at the bottom and carbon so it can’t take a One-up tool thing.

I bought one of these, and despite the mixed reviews complaning its not as fast as a track pump (!) I think its pretty good 🙂 https://www.wiggle.co.uk/topeak-ninja-p-seatpost-pump

Really good! I was very intrigued about the project. Glad to see it came off. I may have sent a few too many of the cartridges!

    I like that op!

Playing devil’s advocate here, wouldn’t you still need to take a co2 cartridge as well if the tyre bead came of the the rim or you needed to reinflate after fitting a tyre boot say?

My 29er tyres seal up with a co2 cartridge no probs but not with a small pump.

Not taking away from the idea as I love it and I’m probably over thinking this.lol

It was a good thing you did because the larger one I thought I needed turned out to be too big but the smaller (16g?) one fitted perfectly. Thanks again!

You’re right, this is primarily so that I can go without any pack or bag at all on shorter (~2hr) rides. As well as the pump I’ve got a multitool that fits in the crank axle and some bacon plugs which fit in the handlebar end. I’m accepting that there’s still potential for walking home because the walk wouldn’t be that long.

    All good points mate.

Is the link you gave to the exact pump you have fitted matey?

I might have a dabble over lock down too.lol

Yes, but also it seems the link is broken so here it is again https://www.topeak.com/global/en/products/216-Mini-Pumps/231-MICRO-ROCKET-AL. I brought it from wiggle for about £20 https://www.wiggle.co.uk/topeak-micro-rocket-al-pump.

I also just came across this post from a few months back which offers an alternative approach https://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/pump-stored-in-steerer-the-easy-way/

I might have a dabble over lock down too.lol

DM me if you’d like some empty CO2 canisters, @mrwhyte sent me plenty and I’d be happy to pass them on!

Actually, this post has me thinking about whether using the Lezyne pocket drive pump would leave room in the steerer for a tubeless repair kit as well.

It’s 4cm shorter than the Topeak one so maybe…

I’m not sure how to get the cover to work well unless there’s an existing kit that I could butcher.

Maybe the inside of a Dynaplug bar end kit http://www.dynaplug.com/covert.html or their pill… http://www.dynaplug.com/pill.html

Very neat. Shame the cost of the giant kit is quite high to start with though. Definitely a market for a cheap copy of the plug and cap.

I got a bit carried away with this but I’ve figured out a nice way to incorporate a tyre stabber by combining the Lezyne pocket drive pump and the Dynaplug carbon ultralite repair kit.

It fits inside the steerer nicely

Though it’s a pretty tight squeeze under the star nut – I needed to trim my top cap bolt to stop it pushing the pump back out. You can see the top of the stabber adapter thing here.

Here’s how it compares to the previous iteration.

I’m just impressed you embedded videos  into a single track world post! Most people can’t even do pictures!
