I am wanting to run a 1×9 set up and I am wondering if I need to buy new chainring bolts, or if I could just put some M8 washers on the bolts? It is a Shimano Deore LX crankset, if it helps.

    Thanks.

If you want to run a bashguard, then most will work with standard chainring bolts. Those that need longer ones (like some e.thirteen) will usually come supplied with the correct (longer) bolts. If you don't want to use a bashguard, then you'll need either spacers/washers for your standard bolts or a set of short, singlespeed bolts.

When going down the washer route, you'll invariably have to file one edge of the washer so it fits onto the crank arm, as there's only about 3mm gap between the bolt hole and the spider.
Not a big issue, but just be aware!

If your going to be running a guide up front you will possibly have issues with the stubs that the granny ring bolts thread in to fouling the guide.
