As above if I plot a route on my phone os app. can it be loaded onto a garmin? Eg an Edge 530 or 810.

Add the GPX as a route to connect.garmin.com and then modern devices like the 530 will automatically download it to device!

Yeah, if using the os maps app, export the route (and add the .gpx extension to the end of the filename), then open up the .gpx file on your phone using Garmin Connect and it gets added as a Course. Then sync the course to your device.

Not quite as easy if using a.computer, but same.thing – save file from OS maps, then open up the Garmin Connect website and go to courses and then add a new course and upload file. Once done, sync to your device and that should be it. I say not quite as easy but only because you can’t just tap the file and Garmin connect will open it.

@DickBarton “if using the os maps app, export the route (and add the .gpx extension to the end of the filename),”

… that’s the bit I’m struggling with when using the OS Maps app on my Android phone.

In the OS Maps App on my phone, when I go to the “export gpx” button or use the share icon there is no option to save it directly to my phone eg the ‘My Files’ app.

Instead I use the email option and email the gpx file to myself and then save the gpx file in ‘My Files’ (cannot remember if I need to rename) and then import the file to the Garmin Connect App.

Am I missing a trick or is there no way to download a gpx file direct from the OS Map android phone app and save as a .gpx file on the phone?

    Grateful for advice.

    Cheers

If you have Google Drive installed on your phone then you can just save it to there (it’s certainly an option for me).

Sorry, I clearly typed all that out in a rush – I export from the OS Map to my Google Drive and then I either download the file to my phone or open the file from my Google Drive and use Garmin Connect to open it up. By selecting Garmin Connect, it then pulls the .gpx file into the Courses option and you can then select which device you want to send the course to – if you have more than 1 Garmin device i.e. a watch and a bike computer.

The OS Map app exports and saves the file but doesn’t give it a file extension, so make sure you add the ‘.gpx’ to the end of the file so it is saved and recognised as a .gpx file.

Drive it is then. Shame no direct to phone option, though thinking about it a bit more, there might have been an option to save to the ‘Secure Folder’ but not something basic like ‘My Files’.

I had a poke around and couldn’t find a way to save direct to phone…which is a nuisance.

That’s weird. On IOS you can save a file to the device. The counter intuitive but is that you then find the file and share to Garmin Connect

I cannot download a .gpx file directly to my phone from the OS Maps App on my phone. However, I can if I open OS Maps in Internet Explorer (or at least the Android equivalent) and I assume the same is true in Google Chrome.

I guess this is similar to some of the file transfer restrictions in Strava where sometimes yiu need to use the Internet version of Strava not the App.

I have something called File Commander on my phone.  If I’m offline and I select that in OS Maps then it allows me to save the file direct to my phone. What I then can’t do is load up the course in Connect, as my phone is offline.

Sorry – should have said that it all works fine if I’m in online mode. I was just trying to think of a way of doing it all offline.

Just had a look and there is a Bluetooth option as well as the email and drive save/export options

I don’t have a Garmin, but can you not just Bluetooth it straight to the device?

Re File Commander … though I haven’t got that on my Android phone what matters is how that, or My Files, becomes/is made an option to download to from OS Maps?

Re Bluetooth, I’m wary of not using the Garmin App (or Garmin Express) to add gpx files to my Garmin Edge 1030 after friend had to send his brand new Edge 1030 back to Garmin after transferring a gpx file directly on to it.

I can also export from OS Map app directly to Garmin Express.

^ not sure I understand. Do you have Garmin Express on your phone (I thought Garmin Express was more of a PC type programme) which then sends the .gpx to your Garmin device?

I have only used Garmin Express on my PC with a cable connection to my Edge 1030

PS, I’ve never been considered tech savvy 😳

Garmin Express is PC/Mac based, but not on the phone (unless some massive update on Garmin Express has happened)…

Bollocks. It’s Garmin EXPLORE that’s on my phone! That works with my Fenix 6.

    Apologies for the misdirection.
