Just got this 8 speed pod from Petra cycles – advertised as XT. It says SL-M748 on the packaging. Doesn’t say XT antwhere on the shifter or packaging. Feels quite solid – anyone know?

Think it might be time to give and go 9 speed.

Yes – any shimano part number with 7 as its first number is XT, 9 is XTR & LX is 5

I always thought 700’s were xt, 900’s xtr, 500’s deore etc.

They are listed all over the net under that number as xt.

    They are xt.

Not getting hung up on this but shouldn’t it say XT on them?

I think you are getting hung up on this…

    Probably, I’d be disappointed.

Shimano sometimes have “non-series” bits and pieces numbered to match similar quality named bits. You can buy stuff like flat bar roadie shifters for touring bikes with equivalent level numbering to XT. Think that’s what these might be, but as roadie and MTB rears pull the same amount of cable per shift they will be fine. Or I’m talking bollocks again.

There’s a sticker on it says “for MTB”

Looks like XT apart from the lower thumb shifter isn’t metal. Might not matter.

It’ll be fine then. If you’re still not happy with 8sp though, I’ve got some 6 speed roadie thumbies in the classifieds.

Got one myself, definitely XT, bought direct from Madison the Shimano importers.
