Going th'aldi tomorrow to pick up some some wine. Want a wine to quaff on the big day, so 3-4 bottles of the same thing, and one a "bit fancy" for meself 😜

I usually go for a pinot noir, but I'm happy drinking anything red.

Are any of the Aldi ones particularly good?

Malbec and the rioja at 7 quid

They also sometimes do a GSM.

Though they usually have some specials in too

+2 for the Malbec. Goes rather well with melted Camembert.

Their £7 Stellenbosch is lovely.

Be careful though as the bottle is so heavy you think it's nearly full when there are only a few drops left

🙁

If they have the Alberone Zinfandel below (out of stock for online) in store grab it. It's seriously good but packs a powerful punch. Might be worth getting their 40 year old port too, for £35 it's a bargain.

Can't beat their Côtes-du-Rhône Villages. I'm obviously not the only one who rates it because it's 50/50 there's any on the shelves when I go.

That Grande Alberone Zinfandel is very chunky and goes really well with dark chocolate for a light dessert (after you've stuffed yourself on other stuff).

I can’t recall the name but there’s an unfiltered one, on the right middle shelf in my local. Black crow or something? Also been drinking a bit of their odd lot.

Edit: just had a look online - black star. Got a picture of a crow on it. It’s rather good for the money imo.

The one with the red or purple lizard/gecko on the label.

Yep the knock off kumala isn’t bad for £4 a bottle either.

Give the Douro a try, especially if you like dry, tangy, perfumed reds.

Forgot what it’s called but Aldi have a petit Verdot in at the moment that’s easily an equal to a very much more expensive bottle

Found it

As per Chakaping the Douro (Animus I think it's called) is very good for a fiver a bottle. They had a special reserve a while ago with a black label for about £7, but I didn't think it was as good.

@juanking, I think that is the Zinfandel that they used to sell in half bottles. From memory it was 14.5% but delicious and was always glad I only ever had half a bottle!!

I thought exactly the same, it seemed quite harsh like a cheap Spanish red!
Anyway I ought not to be on a thread about wine as I'm trying very hard to cut right down on drink

They usually do an Amarone at Xmas which has always been good. Also their ripasso is good. Both of the above they sell at half the price I sell them at and theirs are usually just as good.

Thanks for all the recommendations, I will try my best to work my way through them in time!

Picked up some Stellenbosch, Alberone and a bottle of the "Be Odd" coz I like the label!

So in the middle of a weekday afternoon, buying a selection of red wine from Aldi, I got ID'd!!

I'm 40.

In the STW bike tradition of ignoring the OP and recommending what you like
Jamshed
Also available in Morissons,Iceland,Bargainbooze and B & M.
Pinot Noir is a blue run,Jamshed definitely a red.

I have ended up quite liking Jam Shed but I don’t think it’s a Christmas Day plonk for me.

The Aldi Argie Malbec I stocked up on last year and a few of the toro loco’s. think I’ll try the Stellenbosh and then Lidl for their Ripossa.

Another vote here for the South American Malbec - good with turkey that one.

Also the "Gloria" Douro.

Valpolicella Ripasso. £7.99 worth of gluggable, slightly sweet silky smoothness. They only stock it in the winter.

Further to this, any Italian wine with "Ripasso" or "Apassimento" in its title has undergone some kind of second maturation with grape skins or raisins added and in my experience they're a surefire winner.

What's the current go to reds in Aldi then? Went in earlier but no Stellenbosch or Alberone zinfandel.

Ended up with a monastrell, nice but not quite hitting the spot (I'm sure each glass will taste a bit better than the last).

It's been awhile since I found any Aldi wines I enjoyed properly, not sure if thats my tastes changing or their wines aren't as good.... I think the sub 10quid price point is getting to be a bit of a squeeze to get good stuff in nowadays. Independent retailers seem to only start at a tenner now if that. Probably the best aldi option is whatever you can get from their specials range in the wooden rack

Their Toro Loco Organic @£4.99 was a respectable drop.

If you're interested in Zinfandel, the Brazin available at Waitrose is very good.

The Pinot with the campervan on the label is immense. Sells out quickly. Other than that there's a blue labelled one with a Great Gatsby-esque font that is lovely
