Does anyone have any evidence yet that this isn’t just an urban legend/random facebook lie?

It certainly sounds like it, doesn't it.  "Apparantly the latest..." Apparent to whom?  When?  Where?

In the absence of absolutely anyone claiming that it actually happened to them, let alone numerous accounts which would make it "the latest" anything rather than a one-off incident, I'd file this under "shit that didn't happen so hard that it unhappened shit that did" and move on.

Just be glad it wasn’t a split washer on the khazi of mackruiskeen’s private jet

look, just because it’s happened several times before doesn’t mean it’s definitely going to happen again. It’ll probably be fine

(which is also Boeing’s motto I believe)

Thats just an example of ‘opportunity cost’. Choosing one thing ‘costs’ you the other things you could have had.  I could have an Aston Martin parked outside my house – but I spent the money on a house instead.

I've argued this for years but never had a name for it.  Outrage erupting because the dole dossers next door have a flat-screen TV, conveniently ignoring the fact that a) that's all they have of any value and b) flat screen as opposed to what, I haven't seen a CRT outside of a retro gaming arcade in decades.

Or, whining about the bloke sat outside ASDA with a dog on a string, drinking a can of warm Stella.  If all I had to my name was some string and a dog I'd probably want a drink myself.  As comedian Steve Hughes said, "people tell me 'you shouldn't give them money, they'll only spend it on drink and drugs'... pff, what do you think I was going to spend it on?"

My googling suggests that has happened at least once!

NB the victim forgot about the watch and walked off leaving it in the tray

https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/news/local-news/east-midlands-airport-security-guard-4552885.amp

I’d say if the biggest worry in your life is having your posh watch stolen whilst going on holiday then rejoice, your life is going brilliantly!!!

Where do you put your designer Italian sunglasses that you bought after acquiring an Alfa Romeo when going through airport security?

Been happening for years, cash in wallets also fair game. Put your valuables in your bag in a nice zipped pocket Be aware of your surroundings and security staff. Check them as soon as it comes through before walking off. No reason to sulk.

Sure I can.  I used it to look up 'burden of proof' and confirmed that "no it isn't" is sufficient an answer to rebuke wholly unsubstantiated claims. I could of course attempt to research your claims, but seeing as you couldn't be arsed I fail to see why anyone else should waste their time doing it for you.

Didn't happen.  If it did, it was a one-off.  Prove me wrong.

Been happening for years,

You too.

This is why I like TSA Pre-check. I can keep my cheap-as-shit Casio watch and my shoes on with impunity.

Not what the story says.  It says was left in an envelope on a bus and found by another passenger who handed it to the security staff (who then flogged it).  It was described at court as being unsophisticated - using her own name, waiting for a valuation to come back etc.  That doesn't sound like this is something the staff have well organised as a "racket" to monetise careless passengers.  I'm sure people will leave stuff in trays and probably some of that does not get reported as "lost property", although as this case shows its a high risk strategy.  Some people may even claim it was stolen rather than admit they were careless enough to lose it.

Time to downgrade to a terraced house, buy a G shock from eBay and some Primark jeans

I resemble that comment.

Although it's a 1970's grey rendered semi, cheap IronMan and Primark jeans.

so er how on earth does the thief get away with this? you stand there, put watch in tray. 2 possibly 3 staff have the ability to pilfer it. then about 60 seconds later you go to put on your watch from a now empty tray....all the while there is loads of cctv presumably with more security watching jncase of trouble.

sounds like bs.

we were however scammed by staff at cancoon airport mexico, along with the tu rep when most of the flights suitcases seemed to have gained several kilos and incurred extra fines. considering we flee out with a whole bunch of suncream and loads of cheap cloths to bin whilst we were out there trekking i find it hard to believe our cases were heavier. plus i cant bicep curl over 20kg so i know if the case is heavy....s

Aside from the fact I named two forums and a social media channel that used?

Prove me wrong.

I can’t be arsed.

Well, they got stolen.

I am struggling to work out if this thread is genuine or a troll way above my social class.

Very much not, it was intended as a slightly sigh laden whinge about the element of life that treats others possessions with disregard, didn’t you get a van mirror smashed off or similar once, and the bugger didn’t stop?  That sort of thing.

Instead it’s turning into perhaps the inevitable character assassination, give the thread time and it’ll all be evidenced to be Kier Starmers fault.

a lot of folk can’t afford a mortgage on a terraced house or a G-Shock watch. They can probably afford Primark jeans though. I’d wager a lot of them work a damned sight harder too. Hard work has and will never equal good pay. Normally the opposite!

Any way, enjoy your holiday OP.

#1stworldproblems

MrsRNP took 18 under privileged kids/families away for a long weekend who wouldn't have had a holiday otherwise. She was able to do that because we didn't bother buying bejewelled peacocks but paid the mortgage off instead.

The local school has stopped doing a september first day back 'what did you do in your holidays' because a growing number don't/can't afford to go anywhere. But yeah put the ****ing watch in your bag before you get to x-ray.

@poly

What you said is true. But the start of the story is

Quote

last week was told how the watch had gone missing on March 6, after its owner forgot to pick it up after going through a metal detector before a flight.

Anyway hardly a crime that will be easy to repeat

odd place this.  You come on to muse about the disrespect of property in life and are made out to be some middle class **** by that same people that bang on for ages about pizza ovens, electric cars and air fryers.

But I guess today’s my day to get in a kick in the ribs eh?  **** him and his holiday, he doesn’t work hard and hadn’t earned it I’ll assume, despite the fact I don’t know him at all, theres assumed to be no empathy, philanthropy or care for the starving in Kryton either. He doesn’t give a toss to do anything for his local schools or community that one, what a ****er.  well I’ll assume all that because it must be correct. Just like Flasheart and his £1000 slippers or Renton and his Wheelie bin I’ll look past anything else to to ensure he gets some just deserts as he doesn’t deserve to be amongst us and hopefully we’ll eventually hound him off the forum.

I want people to admire my choice of watch - no not you, you look a bit dodgy.

It's quite the quandary, isn't it?

Kryton, I recommend you promptly leave the thread and head for the haven of (almost always) positivity that is the watch thread you instigated. You've definitely stirred up the stw offence athletes in this one.

And try not to take it all so seriously!

Are you in fact a sheep or cow and the sturdy man a farmer?

@Kryton57

Most of us know where you are coming from.

Unfortunately this place has become as toxic as Twitter. Usual posters trying to score points. People used to get temp bans - seems anything goes now.

It used to be a fun forum but I can’t remember the last time a thread made me laugh. EDL threads on a Friday night were legendary - wouldn’t work now as someone would pick you up on the carbon footprint of your Australian Red. Lucky if a thread lasts a page turns against the OP.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve typed something to think “nah, **** it”.

Same as it's always been, you can have nice things, but you have to look after them properly, same as bikes, couldn't take my little one to the cinema on the bikes like she wanted, as no way we'd leave niceish bikes out for 2 hours in the open.

Who wears a watch outside of work or exercise?!? Madness!

I get your sentiments OP. As mentioned by one or two, everyone is so uptight on here these days, it sucks the life out of the place.

But meh…

@kryton57

I ****ing hate scum-ery and scroatery on all levels - I'm of high moral and social fibre (check my Spring Clean thread for evidence of this!) and work blue collar hard  for what I have. I absolutely echo your sentiments I just think it could have been approached with a different tact. I'm probably over sensitive to it having spent yesterday with MrsRNP and her community kitchen patrons who don't have a pot to piss in but had a brilliant weekend away and were so full of joy and happiness when I was driving them home.

On a lighter note, put the watch in your man bag beforehand - it will be fine, and with sincerity enjoy your downtime and holiday!

are you new here ??
I’m with you BTW , I don’t trust security one little bit. They might pass the checks , but some abuse their positions for personal gain ( I don’t have first hand knowledge of this happening in an airport , but do in other walks of life)

As a general rule I think the poorer you look the more you enjoy a holiday. A passport and credit card in a money belt tucked in your trowsers. Old clothes you'll make a profit on if the airline loses your bag. Wander round with a local supermarket bag in Decathlon sandals and the T-shirt you got from a race you did 10 years back. A wallet with a few notes in to hand over if you get robbed.

Happy hols, Kryton.

Because of this....

However, about a 2 miles away there’s a guy in a council house with an Aston Martin parked in the drive, no one touches is ?‍♂️

Just becuase weve obtained things of value, now we can only wear/use/display things behind closed doors.

And this....

Time to downgrade to a terraced house, buy a G shock from eBay and some Primark jeans 🙁

2+2=4

Congrats on your selective out of context social media posting Alpin. Maybe you could have a think about how that’s having an impact on people across society right now before you do it.

With that in mind it’s just spiteful bulling.  Slow hand clap to you.
