given that there is a risk of an improperly prepared fish could dose you up proper with a potent neurotoxin?

Do the safe bits taste so good that it's worth the risk?

"Numbness around the lips, paralysis followed by death."

That's quite a dessert.

And no antidote to the offending tetradoxin!

I'll pass.

I'd give it a go, what's the strike rate?

Edit, 11 people in Japan between 05 and 14.

And no antidote to the offending tetradoxin!

350 odd folk treated for poisoning apparently, so that's not true...

From reading around thats from people prepping their own, domestically. None from chefs, who have to send 3 years training to be able to serve.

I also hear that it's not the taste that is the attraction, it's the high you get from having just enough of the toxin to not kill you...

Had it raw when I was in S Korea. Tasty enough albeit a delicate flavour, quite chewy.

To be honest it is eaten so much there that there is probably more chance of life threatening illness from your local kebab shop.

Treatment is either soaking it up with charcoal or if it has taken hold put them on life support until it wears off.

The bit that always confuses me about this is how many people did they get through learning which parts were safe.

I've eaten it. It's ok, didn't seem particularly special to me. Commuting to work by bike everyday is much riskier than eating fugu once.

Yes as the risk is actually very small.
