OK, I have an old emachines pc that came with recovery discs rather than the actual copy of windows xp. As the pc has been in my sons bedroom it is full of all sorts of crap so I am trying to restore and reinstall windows.
However, when I run the discs windows will not run. I get a black screen asking if I would like to start in safe mode, safe mode with command promp etc etc. None of the options work. I just keep getting the same screen.
When I select to start with the last known working configuration, I get a message saying the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEM
How do I sort this out, it's driving me mad!!
Any help greatly apprecialted.
Bit obvious suggestion - have you gone into the Bios and set it to boot from CD as the first boot priority option. Normally F1 gets you into the Bios.
Yes tyke, have done that, the discs run through the entire process before I get to this point.

F1 is normally a help key F10 or delete are popular setup keys
