Nah, we paid a hefty premium to be this smug thank you very much. 😉

(And you'd be smug too if you had such a great computer 😛 )

I've had this, and found it was due to having an unreadable disk in the DVD drive (as found on the web in safe mode). Sure enough the drive light was on permanently, and popping the disc out allowed normal operation. I cannot conceive of how this could have been allowed to come about 🙁

Just FYI -

The firm reports that the problem affects editions of Windows 7, Vista, XP, NT, and Windows 2000.

[SMUG]Windows safe mode... in other words we know it'll f$%k up so better design a mode to try and keep it working sort of, similar to the red ring of death or whatever its called on the xbox! Maybe the could just make it not f$%k up in the first place[/SMUG]

What with running an icon free blank black desktop, I doubt I'd even notice a black screen of death 🙂

Hmmm maybe that was the problem I had when I upgraded to 7. It only works when plugged into a HD display.

hey - that's a cool idea! "And then you click this black icon on this black background and a black indicator lights up..."

for no real reason, this has annoyed me.

the "of death" bit refers to windows dying irreparably and being bombed back to dos, surely?

as does the red ring of death on the x box (dead thermostat)

to use "of death" in place of "of my monitor isnt working whinge whinge" is total overhype.

grrr, media tools

no, in that state it doesn't bong when you insert a USB thing and caps/num lock doesn't work - the pooter is in an unusable zombie state 🙁

I've been on 7 for about a month now, straight from XP (new lappy), had no issues, seems stable, speedy and has some nice new features without cutting out any of the 'behind the scenes' stuff that lets me get on with my job.

I've not found anything that doesn't work software wise yet either.

If you're looking at anything over the most basic spec PC I'd say get it.

From what I've seen, the general consensus is that Windows 7 is the OS that Vista was meant to be - If I had to have a PC I'd definitely either install XP or Windows 7.

Er.. I get the exact same black screen problem occasionally when resuming from standby on my Mac book....

How do you mean standby - you mean when you close the lid to put it to sleep?

My wife (we're both mac users) bought a MSI Wind laptop for ultraportable work use (shame mac don't do an equivalent) and apart from the fact that we can't get the wifi to operate the interface is shite.

It's got Win 7 which is so far off mac it's depressing.

I have to put up with Windows at work, but it's their time it wastes due to it's crapness, but so
sad to see their newest product lose out on interface issues-it's quick though.

Ditto but with Macs at college. Problem is it was my time.

Macs are worth they're money. It's like buying a car for £300 that takes forever to start and often breaks down, or saving up and spending £800 on a reliable run around that looks loads nicer as well!

Anyone who uses the operating system on their computer to gain some kind of air of superiority over others must be so devoid of personality they probably even forget to take notice of their own reflections in mirrors.

To the question earlier, yes, windows 7 is pretty good for the most part, as good as XP if not slightly better.

I'd liken it to buying an Alfa. You go round *thinking* you've got something much better than a BMW and it certainly looks nicer than a normal car, the price tag tells you it must be superior so you have to wander around with a smug grin on your face by default, but a focus would have done the job and they're not really that much better are they? Admit it. Be a man, own up to the fact that they're not that much better.
