Saw Speyburn Bradan Orach single malt on special offer in my local shop for £16.99 so i thought "I'll have some of that thank you very much"…..
Finally sat down tight at 9.30 after a wee run out on the bike and tea all sorted and done with, i'm not back at work till monday and i picked up the latest copy of "Cyclist" earlier today so i thought i'd treat myself to a few whiskys in front of the fire with a tub of medjool dates (non israeli produce) to chew on, got the chair positioned facing the fire, suitable tumbler of whisky and wee jug of water, "Olafur Arnolds" playing away through the speakers so i was all set for a 2hr session immersed in my own wee world.
Take a sniff of the tumbler…..Hmmm?, sweet, almost sickly smell…reminds me of pear drops that've been left to melt together, sniff…..almost smells of acetone?????, take a swill out of the glass….Pffffftgh - gleurghhhh…..wtf is this?, it tastes as bad as it smells and it does taste of acetone ….try another taste as i may have been mistaken bleurghhhhh….. gag…..retch….wtf is this?….sweet sickly aftertaste that is thin and watery….perfumed smell that haunts my nose and leaves my lips smacking together like a fish out of water
Stay very far away from it…………..the most foul tasting product i have ever had the misfortune to attempt to drink in my life so i'm taking it back t'morn - it is clearly not as described on the bottle "green apples, honey, lemon and floral vanilla spices" - how the god given **** can it be described as such i have not the faintest idea.
That's almost spoilt my ****ing night!…if it wasn't for the remnants of a bottle of 17yr old Balvenie Doublewood at the back of my cupboard but i was wanting to save it, Bah!….i've learnt my lesson - don't expect cheap shite to taste good…i'd have been better off buying a cheap bottle of grouse.
Acetone.
Sure it wasn't knock off? Might be worth giving the relevant people a call..
Trading standards?
As Squirrel said, if it really tastes of chemicals, call it in. It would probably be respectful to the distillary to clarify on here, too.
If, on the other hand, you're over egging your criticsm just so that we all know JUST how much of a connoisseur you are, please carry on....
Did it have a metallic taste, like licking batteries?
Nah, over the past few minutes I've read various reviews on the whisky sites and the only folk who give it a favourable review are a few Americans who picked it up for $15 a bottle (says it all really), pretty much every review slates it and mentions the acetone taste, so at least I know I can describe whisky along with the pro's 😀
Ho hum........only got 4 or 5 measures left of my Balvenie but ill finish that tonight to try and drown out my foolish mistake, normal 12yr old Balvenie doublewood is on offer in tescos so I'll treat myself to that tmorn.
Just use it as a degreaser for your bike, or to start a fire in the wood burner...
Liked this review on master of malt. "Better scotch can be had from wringing a hefty scotsman's codpiece on a warm summers day."
Pale straw colour?
Ledaig; like drinking the seawater they've used to put out a tyre fire.
Probably not the tag line on the box...
Yeah I took solace in that particular review, at least others have come to the same conclusion regarding the foul taste. Some of the comments are particularly vicious so surely the distillery have noticed?, if not then they deserve to go under as selling this sort of shite as a malt whisky is not on.
I dunno how it will go when I ask for a refund but we'll see tmorn.
splash a bit of cola in it and it'll be fine
Reasonable reviews here

I'm sure it's not the best around, but it does sound as though you've got a fake bottle.
Never drunk Loch Dhu then? *That* was foul.
I think I did try that Speyburn (no age statement?) from the local garage, it really wasn't up to much. Not great, not as awful as that mind you!!
Speyburn I've had mixed experience of in the past as well to be honest, the only bottle that took a long time to drink - it was excessively sulphur in taste, it can happen but it's not the end of the world.
£16.99 is pretty cheap!
i took it back when i was across the town just now and got my money back, one of the benefits of staying in a small town where you've known the folk pretty much all your life.
Bleurgh!. cheap malt is cheap for a reason.
Ledaig; like drinking the seawater they've used to put out a tyre fire.
