dorset cerals apple and rasin porridge, is my current porridge of choice.
or M&S ready to do bung it in the micro stuff used to eat ton's of it when I worked in town.
Scots with fresh milk from the farm, with the cream put on top is one thing i really miss from when I was a kid.
cook with water and salt - serve with a splash of milk and sugar
2 1/2 - 1 ratio water to oats
Blimey! Right, no Sainsbury or Tesco (believe it or not) close by but we do have a Waitrose in town so will give their Four Grain stuff a look. They'll also do Dorset too I'm thinking so will have a look at that, though a lot of the Dorset range has nut content which is a problem for me (although I'm sure their porridge won't). Or good old Scotts; why fix it if it ain't broke, eh?
Thanks for the responses 🙂
jordans, sainsburys finest or dorset, for best but scotts is better than nowt. skimmed milk and water and a pinch of salt then add some Golden Syrup to sweeten 'er up. Porridge season starts 1/10 in our house.
You can't make proper porridge in the microwave, Its all about the stirring.
2008 Winner: Winner of Golden Spurtle: Ian Bishop - The Slochd , Carrbridge. - Local mountain bike guru... Wonder if he frequents STW; if so, what's yer recipe mate? 😀
I stopped by at ians place a while ago and got some old school shimano fluro sticker sets from him (80s) I should have asked to try out this porage he makes..considering the time i was there.
i like scots porage oats.the microwave seems do do a good job of it.
heaps of sugar.. mmmm.
For quicker cooking on the stove mix the ingredients together before bed the night before. The oats will soften and the natural sugars will be released. Yum.
The cycling plus recipe with goji berries, cardamon and cinamon in is good especially when topped with fresh mango.
I have porridge every morning takes next to no time, porridge and water in pan, boil stir leave for a min while make coffee and its done. As said above tesco finest is good but the organic tesco seems the same and is two p cheaper.
Scots quick one in the packets - cos I am lazy/short on time. 2 packets most of the time.
With milk and a tablespoon of local honey.
If you're going for Scott's Porage (note the two '"t"'s in the name and the speeling of the word Porage.....) then look for the Old Fashioned variety. The grain is milled less and has a more nutty texture.
Oh - honey and banana are my favourite additives.
What's wrong with Quaker oats ???
50gms oats - 310ml water/skimmed milk - with handful of raisins
Microwave for 3mins - stand for 2mins then sprinkle raisins
Raisins and sugar for sweetness. Or a small pot of yoghurt, any flavour you like gives it a sweet creaminess which does the biz for me.
Tried it with salt once-yuck. Is that some kind of Scottish joke? Does anyone actually enjoy/do this?
Savoury porage is just fine.
My favourite is the one where illiterate Godbar (sp?) gets fletcher to read/write all his love letters to a girl and it turns out to be Fletchers daughter, or something along those lines.
Hard lines mate, that joke was done on the last page....
Yes I know smartarse, it genuinely was my favourite Porridge episode.
Scotts.
I've tried oats that are more solid/less flowery and they don't work so well in a microwave (unless you crush 'em in your hands a bit):
boil kettle
add oats to water in bowl+mix
let stand for a minute or so (so the oats absorb the water)
add a touch more water if needed, lob in microwave for about a minute
Excellent with a banana chopped into it, don't need any sugar
I like Golden Syrup Oatso Simple....microwaved in 2 mins.
*runs*
Waitrose organic jumbo oats, made with water then golden syrup & a little full fat milk.
