before i ring ODG, just been looking at some google pics.  this is the hikers bar.....

Image result for old dungeon ghyll hikers bar

as you can see, theres no slate coloured section jutting out to the side of it which my pic shows.  we still thinking the same?

oldbloke, is that the same as whitestones answer?

thanks

This is a better shot of the hotel showing the other half of the building that is slate. The bar is most of the ground floor of the whitewashed section.

If you look at ODG further to the left as you look at it, there's a slate built bit which sticks out. That's the posher bit of the place. So it won't be a window above the Hikers bar, but a bit further over - maybe above residents Bar. I'm probably wrong on the room number but they've probably got photos of each room on the website to narrow it down.

Derwent water answer same as Whitestone, but narrowing it down a bit. There's a landing stage Dawes End where the hipflask could be on top of one of its posts - Google images will probably show you what I mean.

PS

This

http://www.odg.co.uk/facilities/

gives interior shots of all the bedrooms. Sill plus sash window narrows it down a bit.

I have nothing to add with respect to identifying locations, but whiting out the faces in photos like has been done above is really creepy!

why chris?  better than putting identifiable photos up on t'interweb do you not think?

genuinely interested in what you think would be a better solution?

thanks for that link martin, that rules out a few (including 9 and 10) 🙂

It's not the reason, which is very reasonable, it's just the particular effect. I think I've seen a music video or something where people's faces were replaced with a scratchy white-out effect and it was very sinister. It was probably a Muse video. Or maybe it was an episode of Doctor Who.

haha, ODG just replied to my room number request, just had a What The ****?? from my mate 😀   its what makes it all worthwhile 😀

However..........

Of the last group the first is looking up Oxendale towards Crinkle Crags

he says this one is wrong..... can we pull it out the bag with a second guess?

OK, it was my "guess" at that. Second guess is looking up Wythburn at the south end of Thirlmere.

The view from the hotel is definitely Pike O Blisco. The other mountain is probably as well (from Stool End or thereabouts), with The Band rising on the right.

Then again, it could be taken from the sheepfold on the Cumbria Way in Mickleden...snow always makes me confused.

Oh, alright then, that's Seathwaite in Borrowdale, and walking up Grains Gill.

Why stay in the ODG then drive to Borrowdale? Sneaky bugger.

Don't think there's much doubt it's Grains Gill.

As per Martin, all the pics look like borrowdale and specifically stockley bridge area looking up grains gill

pics above with stream on right would've been taken pretty much in same spot on the path in the background in this pic

Bowder Stone? first two Langdales, Little? The quarry, If I am right, gets dark down that corridor;)

The middle one is Borrowdale, that's Goat Crag on the fellside behind with the hill at the left edge being Castle Crag. At a guess it has been taken from the top of the ladder on the Bowderstone which is the bottom shot.

The mine entrance looks quite like Goldscope mine in Newlands valley.

Last pic is def bowder stone. Not sure if first one is little Langdale quarry, was there yesterday and whilst very similar (and a good walk) it doesn’t look 100%.

Right next door to Borrowdale, so near enough. Whitestone is right about pic 2. The polish on the foot/handholds gives it away.

There are loads of those mine entrances around. Perhaps there's one in Quayfoot Quarry which is right next to the Bowderstone.

just before i take a 1 in 3 guess then, (little langdale quarry, quayfoot quarry or newlands valley) ill just put up the pics next to it, just in case it gives a clue as to his movements.....

we had this just before the bowder stone.......

Image may contain: sky, mountain, plant, tree, outdoor, nature and water

so then it was bowderstone, then these.....

Image may contain: sky, tree, outdoor, nature and water

Image may contain: mountain, sky, cloud, outdoor and nature

Image may contain: sky, mountain, plant, tree, outdoor, nature and water

........followed by the cave entrance.  then after the cave was.......

Image may contain: sky, ocean, cloud, outdoor, nature and water

does this make any sense as a possible route?

thanks

As soon as I saw the cave I thought gold scope mine, newlands valley. I’ve led a few groups into there, back in the day. The last few pics are various points around buttermere lake shore, then the very last is , I think, crummock water from buttermere end, melbreak fell on left. However, not aware of a cave/mine like that near buttermere, although there is the rock tunnel on the footpath on buttermere east side......could be there! In fact, given the location clues from the other pics I’m going for that.

The first pic in this series is from the bridge in Grange looking up the valley to Caste Crag and Goat Crag. The remainder are on a walk around the shores of Buttermere.

First one looks like Skiddaw in the background, so I'm going for both pics being in or near Hollows Farm Campsite at Grange.
