Where to store an ebike?

My garage is chocka and so inside storage is not possible without some serious sorting out.

Is one of the Asgard storage sheds a good option? The person at wheelbase was saying that outside storage is not good for the battery, but I can't see it being much warmer inside the garage.

Any experiences? It's a trek hybrid ebike if that makes any difference.

TIA

I was going to say 'in a big fire proof box' if you're charging it unaccompanied.

But jesting aside (I only said the above half joking btw) if it's a pricey e-bike, I'd seriously be looking to somehow free up space and get it inside a built garage, even if that means putting other stuff outside / in an alternative 'shed'.

2 things we have done in the past when sorting stuff:-

1. We had some things in the big 'really useful' boxes that we had outside our garage (doesn't face the road / not visible to passersl with a tarp over, for a while.  Not the crown jewels or uber-sensitive stuff, but they held up well (the tarp obvs stops the rain + UV damage, and the boxes themselves are rain tight though not hermetically sealed).

2. We rented a small storage room in a local self-storage place to store things we only needed to access infrequently / could plan for (eg big frame tent and other 'long stay holiday' camp stuff.

As someone who's currently tryingj to clear our garage of stuff we have kept for 10-20 years, have a good hard think as to whether what you are storing is actually worth less than what it's going to cost for the alternative Asgard or similar extra store.

On the temperature front, my understanding (i'm getting involved in BIG L-ion set-ups as part of my day job on a few projects), ideally l-ion batteries would like to live their happy least-stressed lives at about 25C, certainly  when  in use or charging.   Thats not going to happen much in Blighty !

My detached unheated stone / breeze block) garage was 8C last night- basically the same as outside - though since getting new doors its not draughty and seems less damp.   (I hung up my Garmin watch whist in there doing some work to find out, and forgetfulness  left it in there all night).

If you have garden space, a cheap to build lean-to could provide unsecure shelter for non valuable stuff. Doesn't even need a door, just leave one sheet off on the side not facing the wind. Floor could be a few old pallets.

Could you take the battery off the bike and store it in the house?

The last thing I’d want indoors is an e-bike battery.

Could you not get an Asguard shed and line it with nice thick insulation?

I'd definitely be opting for serious sorting out over spending cash on an Asguard!

I'd also charge/keep the battery inside for longevity, use an ammo or some other decent metal box so if it does pop all the burny bits remain in the box rather than over your carpet.   But as long as it's a decent/branded bike and battery I don't think there is any increased risk, we all charge our lithium powered phones/bike lights/laptops without giving it too much thought.

In an ideal world, sort out the crap in the garage, ground anchor and charge the battery in the garage on the bike with the charger connected to a timer so its not on 24 hrs. And after 2 battery fires which totalled the houses in my village, personally, I only charge them during the day when I'm up and around the house.

So you're going to spend a load of cash rather than just spend a few hours - is this just you getting in your New Year Brag early of how rich you are?

If the last garage sort out I saw was anything to go on. Half a ton of the shit in the garage should have been got rid of a decade ago...

@intheborders lol if only

Thanks all. And yes there is a ton of stuff in there that could do with getting rid of so I think I need to stop being lazy and get on with the inevitable!

In a purpose built cabinet thing in the house for me.

Can't tell it's there and is in easy reach etc for riding.

Never charge it when we are not in or overnight, although looking at how quickly li-ion fires get nasty, I doubt we'd be able to protect much other than ourselves if it did decide to catch fire.

That said, as others point out, there is already at least 20 other li-ion powered devices on a constant charge / use cycle in the house and nothing has ever gone wrong - granted none with as much stored energy as the bike.

This is how you turn deflagration into an explosion!

As for where to keep it, check your insurance, you may make it void if stored outside the house and garage, it may require ground anchors, etc, etc.  I'd definitely look at moving stuff around in the garage to accommodate, remove battery to charge indoors as well.

Afternoon.  Be really careful about the max. payments and T&Cs of your insurance on how and where you store bikes - particularly s****y pricey ebikes.  Even locked in a garage and with the stored-in-garage extra, I found my house insurance was citing only a few grand of a max payments and big excess.

I have 2 Turbo Levo bikes in my Asgard shed and leave the batteries in place and no issues in 4 years. Rationale for batteries in place is not leaving the cable connector exposed with battery off.

Got to say Asgard is one of the best bike related purchase I’ve ever made so would highly recommend going for a 29er which can fit 4 bikes.

Sort the garage out. Get rid of everything that's rubbish - the tip will recover everything that's recycleable, the rest is crap. Get rid of everything that isn't rubbish but isn't any use to you - there is someone who lives nearby that would love to have that chair/desk/whatever.

Since my brick garage got broken into and all my bikes nicked, the replacements are in an Asgard, locked together with a motorbike chain and a a Ring camera watching over, amongst other things. The ebike battery isn't removable so I have wired in a double socket to run the charger and a dehumidifier on low, particularly handy if you're putting washed bikes away. Early days but works well so far
