It makes no difference to me that he is 'one of us', but it's a sad loss of one brave enough to defend his country, I hope his parents are proud, & at the same time coping with the grief.
You may be thinking that he was not defending his country, simply serving the politicians, I would disagree, if we don't fight terrorism then it will fight us, only harder & less discriminatingly.

Do you think that these poor sods actually believe they would have stood a chance of actually being killed? Or would they have gone into it thinking 'it won't happen, the chances of dying are so slim'.

But a dreadful week. 🙁

since most terrorism is a reaction to past or current injustice, fighting it only serves to reinforce it 🙁

past or current injustice

In the spirit of fairness, I think that should read 'past or current perceived injustice...'

Please don't start that here. If you wish to discuss the ethics etc of the situation, please go somewhere else. Start another thread.

Well said CFH.
It is heartbreaking to see another parents lose a child, and it makes you want to wrap your own in cotton wool and lock them indoors.

Poor guy! Get's the ultimate respect from me. I know the hurt his family and friends are feeling.

It's at times like this that I think (rightly or wrongly) that we should leave America to fight it's own battles!

The other countries involved in supporting the effort should put in the same numbers as us and move to the frontline too.

We need to take a close look at what provokes the situations that we have suffered (7/7, 9/11, Bali, Mumbai). The mysery will surely continue for many decades whatever we do however.

A lot of people in the know are saying we are fighting an unwinnable war in Afghanistan and that the issues originate in other countries such as ****stan.

All I know is that we keep ourselves on the hit list by continuing this, but then how do you deal with these madmen? Do you let them get away with it? We can't really roll over and withdraw. Perhaps our involvement is even isolating ourselves out to become the next target. If you saw the speech Obama made in Cairo a few weeks ago, you'll understand why the focus of hate has moved more towards the British. Unfortunatley we do not have a black Primeminister with an innate understanding of the Muslim culture and who has fabulous oratory skills.

RIP brave soldiers, doing their duty in highly dangerous situations. True heros!

no, actually it confirms my bringing them up to have a profound disrespect for all forms of authority so they don't get conned by a heartless MOD that will send them to do things better not done, ill support them and dump them as soon as they stop being useful 🙁

Very sad.
Caught some of that docu about the priests out there with the troops. What a place to be fighting a war. Not that there's a good place.
I'm far from a sentimental type, but wouldn't it be nice if human beings could stop f*^&ing killing each other.

Agree with CFH this is not a thread for political espousing.

Just watched it on sky news (bbc didnt seem to see fit to have it on their interactive red button or other tv news channels) and some kids had a massive banner for Daniel Hume.

I think the people of Wootton Bassett are ambassadors for the best of human nature, and I'm sure their displays of support are appreciated by the families.

I heard there might be a similar reception in Oxford as they are all being driven to the Radcliffe Hospital.

Unfortunately the two things that humans excel at is f#####g and fighting.

RIP lad.

"A year as a Lion or a lifetime as a donkey"

That's how i felt when i walked through your (AFCO) doors. You wont change a young man with drive and ambition, don't let it get to you.

the threads about paying our respects in a small way.

and isn't it naive to suppose that the choice of who we do and don't "pay respects" to isn't political ?

Dan was singled out for mention in particular on BBC radio news today.

RIP fella. You crashed out trying to do the right thing in a place where too much is wrong. Dusty trails forever.
