richmtb - MemberComforting as it might be to think your generation represents the peak of existence and the world will descend into to anarchy and disaster shortly after you shuffle off this mortal coil, ultimately its just pessimistic bollocks
Who the hell finds that idea comforting? Jamba possibly but for most people...

There are some miserable folk on here.
Miserable ?
Realistic more like.
You just have to face reality, humans are in a sweet spot at the moment with medicines and tech, but vast parts of the planet are without clean water and a pot to piss in. Governments perform policies for 4years only with no sustainable policies across any political body and global policies have limited effectiveness without full support, which they don't have.
Humans are basically greedy basterds which means we will gobble up any resource we think will keep us going, but cross our needs with virus outbreaks already happening and desperation between rich and poor puts humans in a very vulnerable position.
There are many nasty viruses out there, by God the UK makes some of the nastiest, had those out to some crackpot Government or Radical body and it's all over.
What I'd really like to see, in my limited time left on here, are Aliens. I'd really like to see this topic out, are there Aliens watching us/did they underpin humans millennia ago? Are we some sort of experiment or are we ahead of our time? Will an Alien actually appear on TV and say Hi? Or will they turn up and zap us all into dust? Within the next 30years I'd like to see Governments across the Planet open up and release any information they have on the subject..
We will have realised that consciousness can be digitised.
We will all live in a digital world that very closely reflects ours, but doesn't put any strain no the resources of Earth.
Only a select few will be kept alive in the real world (enough to continue the human race once the earth has recovered from World War 24)
Or maybe I have been watching too many films.
nah, most developing countries get stable replacement numbers after a while after they begin to get wealthier. Education and increasing middle class and women's rights mean that pregnancies can be planned and birth rate falls off a cliff. It's predicted to get to 11 billion and then start to decline again.
this is true. But on the other hand so is this...
Realistic more like.
you started quite well...
I'd like to see Governments across the Planet open up and release any information they have on the subject..
and ended up with tin foil and aliens...
😆
don't think humanity as we know it- ie baseline, organically grown humanity- has a century left. Weird times are coming.
So you think kids being born now will not die a 'natural' death?
There are many nasty viruses out there,
Yes but modern medicine has a pretty good record of beating them.
The Black Death killed around 25% of the population of Europe in the middle ages.
Spanish Flu killed more people the the First World War.
Since then there hasn't been any major epidemics. Instead modern medicine has rolled back disease after disease. Smallpox has been eliminated, Polio is also almost eliminated. Vaccination against "childhood" diseases has seen infant mortality fall from 200 in 1000 at the turn of the 20th century to a global average of 5 in 1000.
Sure there has been one or two blips along the way. SARS, Bird Flu, Swine Flu, Ebola (which for a time looked like a potentially serious outbreak but was actually contained pretty quickly once it got the attention it deserved). Even AIDS has been downgraded from a deadly disease to a chronic condition and progress on a cure / vaccine is continuing.
So actually looking at the evidence rather than just having a pessimistic shrug. I don't think a global epidemic is a likely scenario
this is true. But on the other hand so is this...
It's a bit like Russian roulette. It could end up messy with lots of death.
Or the temperature might rise 5C, and nothing really happen, large patches of Earth might become habitable, Scotland* for example. And Africa just becomes like one giant Abu Dhabi filled with air conditioned shopping malls.
Either way I don't think global warming is apocalyptic, it's a problem for sure, but if it were even half as bad as some people on here make out then the temperatures would fall again once most of the population died and we'd be back where we are now within a generation or two.
*Joking, but there's a lot of northern Canada and Russia that you'd not want to live in at the moment.
Even AIDS has been downgraded from a deadly disease to a chronic condition and progress on a cure / vaccine is continuing.
With PrEP being a very expensive way of immunizing someone and an effective (if even more expensive) treatment I think it's fair to say it's actually cured? IIRC the difference in life expectancy now between someone just starting on PrEP and someone without HIV is mostly down to the statistical likelyhood of them not taking PrEP at some point in their life?
Give it 25 years and the potential global market for generics is huge, we'll give it to a generation of teenagers like we do the pill now and HIV will die out in a generation.
bmw drivers will have worked out what indicators are for and how they work
Oh, come on!
EDIT - maybe
Hmmmm, still wishful thinking, in my opinion
We'll be able to have a thread on here without some **** mentioning those who voted to leave the EU.
CharlieMungus - MemberSo you think kids being born now will not die a 'natural' death?
Uh, no, I think they almost certainly will. But lots of them won't live a "natural" life. It's a small but important step past medical repair to augmentation, and only a matter of time til we make it.
In 7017 the Malatak, a sentient species evolved from the house brick, will trigger article 5.06 in order to leave the Galactic Union. This will only occur due to the ruling party at the time, a sub species descended from breeze blocks and crazy paving, deciding to let the general public vote on the decision to leave the GU.
