Also, why do folks keep saying Queen is rock?

Probably because they started out as a rock band ..before they became a pop band

This is an argument that:

a) past its sell-by-date in about 1985

b) should only be allowed if all protagonists are clad in double denim.

+1 for Every Rose Has its Thorn as the apotheosis of the genre.

Live, Queen were always very much a rock band. On record, they were a rock up to, and including, A Kind of Magic, at least.

Can't believe no one's mentioned Aerosmith yet.. Don't want to close my eyes.

Also of worthy note Bryan Adams, every thing I do.
What I love best about that song other than being a legitimate great ballad, is that the powers that be, in the Robin hood film, for which it was commissioned, hated it so much they just used it as music for the end credits, the song went on to stay in the charts for longer than the known universe has existed.

Ah of course, which proves my point about how rubbish rock ballads are.

I've got a soft spot for rock ballads, apart from Extreme More Than Words which is just makes my skin crawl

Can I have a cover version as it is waaay better than the original? Nine Inch Nails 'Hurt' but the Johnny Cash version. Haunting to say the least.

Mikey 74 ..Queen..I saw them ( I'm guessing the year before you were born)in '73 at Newcastle City Hall and they were very much a rock band ..stayed with them up to and including " A Night At The Opera"..that was about as much as I could stomach in terms of their commercialism / pop sensibilities ..

I don't know about better but janis joplins version of me and Bobby mcgee is certainly equivalent to kris kristophersons.

Not strictly rock though, more country.

No no no. A [s]proper[/s] crappy rock ballad starts out all sloppy and acoustic then runs into an extended widdle-fest before returning to some pathetic anti-climax. Be My Friend is just a good song.

A good song is a good song, regardless of the 'genre', for want of a better word. A good rock ballad should have the same sort of power as any good rock song, only carrying more emotional content.
Christ knows there's loads of crap rock songs, G'n'R's entire back catalogue makes up a significant portion! 😉
Never been quite sure whether this could be classed as a 'power-ballad' or not, it certainly opens with an acoustic guitar...

While I do like a bit of cheese and a lot of metal, there are many rock ballads that are neither. And some deserve a mention:

And the best rock-band ballad to ever be dedicated to Cthulhu (not to mention the most disturbing video ever to feature Bojo, Bliar and Busch all in one place). In fact the whole thing (incredible as it is) should probably be classified as unsafe for owt:
