Just a thought after having nice convo with my OH over a coffee. What's makes you happy?. I'm talking about deep down happy not just riding bikes haha. I mean being on a mountain looking at great views, spending time on walks with your dog, being with family and partner, buying a new gadget etc.

Be interesting to see what others thoughts are on happiness.

Other than the obvious (spending time with my wife, kids and dog etc), riding my bike makes me deep down happy too!

Seeing elderly couples who appear to still be very much in love, pensioners holding hands cheers me up no end.

Drawing pictures. Seriously.

When I've got something vividly pictured in my head, and I get it down exactly as I want it, the feeling of satisfaction and happiness I get is difficult to describe.

Power kites. Oh, and one of those poppies from the Tower of London.

Deep powder skiing. Sunbaked Alpine DH trails. Exploring an unfamiliar country. Her smile. Bacon and fresh coffee.

Mostly riding bikes. The best is when I'm in the zone in hard technical terrain in an awesome location - the kind of thing where you daren't not concentrate on the trail (you'll die. Messily), but there's just this awareness of the vastness of a beautiful landscape around you. La Varda would be a classic example. In the Uk dropping out of the cloud coming down the back of Cloggy on the Snowdon Ranger path or Esk Hause/Sty Head in the lakes. I also love standing high on an Alpine mountain singletrack and seeing snippets of it poking out of the landscape for the next few miles and knowing there's going to be some awesome riding coming shortly.

First run on untouched fresh pistes on a beautiful bluebird morning skiing (not good enough for pow yet). Driving FAR too fast on a great country road.

The first mouthful of beer/coffee/whisky after the above^^

I quite enjoy having planned some weird stuff at work, then the moment when it all comes together on site and BOSH, you've got a gig, but it's not the same high as above.

To be honest - the stuff that makes me deep down happy, is the stuff that I can get so engrossed in I can stop being aware of "me" all together. What that says about "me" probably doesn't make for good reading...

Small pieces of well-made light engineering... I can fondle a top-end rear mech or a fishing reel for hours.

Sorry for the cliché, but its mainly my son. He texted me from his school trip a couple of days ago to say he was having 'great fun' (teenagers just don't say that!) and it brought tears of joy to my old weary eyes.

Also live music in a grotty little club somewhere, discovering something new.

And riding off road out on them hills.

And the kid's rugby. Shame there's people there that act weird, but the kids are great.

Riding bikes. Fixing bikes. Nature (especially birds). Fine wine. Big cuddly dogs. The Mrs (she made me write that).

Sunshine. Doesn't matter if it's warm or cold.

Think I live in the wrong country.

Music
Otters playing
A baked potato with serious amounts of butter and cheese
Riding bikes downhill on singletrack (the rest of it is good but singletrack with a downward incline is the stuff of life)
The sea
The mountains
Not having anything I HAVE to do

Other than my wife and son:

Riding bikes, listening to a great album, proper sunny weather, being in forests or by the sea, dogs.

Wilfully misinterpreting comments on the internet for my own amusement. If I can also squeeze in a Pune (or play on words) then all the better.

I think that's probably fairly normal - or maybe I just have the same issues. Though to some extent achieving happiness seems more about avoiding being unhappy/sad, and being self-aware seems to cause me problems in that direction.

Though if the criteria is deep down happy, then I'm not sure about that. I've got a variety of things I regularly do which make me happy whilst I'm doing them, but it always seems to wear off too quickly, so I'm not sure I am deep down happy, or that anything does. I guess being content with having periods of feeling good is OK.

Beer, gin, red wine, barbecue food, bike riding, bike bits, bikes, stuff that works, a newly made bed, that rain smell, pine forest smell, petrol smell, kebab meat, seeing happy people laughing, animals playing, spring, my bank balance

Bikes / weans / wives / family/ dogs aside...

For me, happiness is most often found in the enjoyment of nature. Pick any day (especially a sunny one) and include a walk, a bit of hammock time, brewing tea over a fire in the woods or canoeing somewhere quiet. Lovely!
